Fun Fact: During the recording and writing of this album Deftones were having a block and loss of direction. I forget how the story goes but something like Maynard was in town doing another thing and the asked if he would come to the studio and listen to some demos and give some input/advice. When he heard the demo for Passenger he felt the song needed more and decided to add his lyrics/lines afterwards. Just imagine the original demo of the song was just Chinos vocals.

Yep, he was in town working with APC and got really into what Deftones were doing that they almost had him produce their whole album supposedly. He decided to have this be his only contribution to the album and let them find their own voice for the rest of the album. Pretty cool collaboration though.

Love the reaction. One thing to understand as you get into Deftones that will make the process a little easier, most of thier songs meanings are very abstract, as is the title of thier songs. It is more about the atmosphere their sound creates then what the lyrics are. You will drive yourself crazy trying to figure out the meanings of their songs, just enjoy the atmosphere the sound creates. Deftones are very unique in that way. A few recomendations, Rosemary, Knife Prty, and Digita Bath. If you want to hear some of thier heavier side there is My Own Summer, Royal, and When Girls Telephone Boys.

So on surface level this song is about having sex in a moving car lol but if you delve deeper into the lyrics, and I’m pretty sure this has been confirmed by Chino and Maynard, this song can also be interpreted to be about being in a situation where one person is along for the ride and leaving total faith and trust into another person to just “steer the car”. Basically putting your life in the hands of the person you’re experiencing this stuff with. Whether you wanna interpret that to be a romantic experience or not is up to you. Either way I think it’s interesting

I'm pretty sure it is simply about sex though. Sure, you can interpret it in other ways, or get a deeper meaning from it, but I'm pretty sure they were simply thinking about sex when they wrote it. I have a story with this song, Deftones have been one of my favorite bands since I was in middle school circa 1997. I've seen them live over a dozen times, but one tops them all. I think I was 22 at the time and went to see them with a friend, but when I got to the venue she called saying he couldn't come. So I decided to sell the extra ticket at face value, 30 bucks. The very first person I ask, "Well, I don't have 30 bucks, but I have an 1/8th of mushrooms." It took me all of one second, "Sold, my good sir." I ate them in my car and went in, the first band kinda sucked and I kept waiting for the kick in it never came, "Fuck, that guy burned me.". So Deftones' crew is setting them up and boy did it ever kick in. When Chino and the boys took the stage I was tripping hard in the middle of the GA pit roughly 30 feet from the stage. This was their opening song and I likened it to an out of body experience. As the chorus came I just looked around and saw everyone singing the lyrics, myself included. And I felt the sway of the crowd and just thought, "We're all the Passenger." I know, a crazy guy tripping thought but it felt so profound at the time. One of my favorite concerts ever.

I am glad to say I've seen this band more than I can count! Both while stationed in Germany and stateside while I was in the Army and festivals after my service ended. During the 2000s I was dating a woman while I was on tour and every time I came off of tour, she had the house light in candles and in her "Sunday's Best". "Welcome home! Now it's time to get down to business!" and she'd grab the remote and this song was always first! Man, she was a good woman. God rest her. Lost her after a 5-year battle with cancer in 2013. Rest in peace, my Valkyrie. Thank you for this reaction, Aileen. Great memories of mosh pits, touring and the love of my life. Merry Christmas!

The way i interperet the lyrics is like someone dealing with drug addiction. Its all about the desperation in both Maynard and Chino's voices.. Makes me think about someone doing some kind of hard drugs, using all of it, then getting in their car to go meet their dealer for more. Then the process starts again. Maynard would be the voice of the substance, while Chino is the voice of the user. Sometimes a whisper, sometimes yelling. The lyrics very much play into the uneasiness of the music as well

Another great reaction, thanks as ever. Like a lot of great art, there is considerable room for interpretation as to what this song means. In fact, the meaning of the lyrics is so vague and at times abstract that I think they are inviting us to interpret it as we feel is right. It’s a theme that is common to both Tool and Deftones. If you want to listen to another great Deftones song, with not only Chino Moreno at his best, but also a heavy, killer riff that’s right up your street, then I can’t think of a better one than Shut Up And Drive.
