The pure blunt honesty of this song's lyrics always stood out to me. "Fuck your God", "he did this", "the one who left you broken down and paralyzed"...he's questioning her by trying to point out why her faith doesn't make sense, but there's a bitterness to it. These are thoughts he may have never articulated right to her face, but feelings he wrestled with inside and decided to let out in this song. The instrumentals really back up the anger, and the backup vocals from Billy Howerdel are the finishing touch. Just a really good song.
@willvr4
@willvr4 2 жыл бұрын
Exactly, I have these thoughts all the time. But I'm not going to say it out loud to someone who is religious when they are suffering because there's no point to it. For all I know, I may turn to God on my deathbed just to feel comfortable, even if it's not real.

I think it is also equally relevant to point out that Maynard supposedly (somebody verify whether this is true or not) gave his life to Christ a few years back as well... We have all had those moments of frustration in our lives and questioned our faiths, but in the end we can either depend on our own strength and understanding or we can choose to depend on His. ❤

Fun anecdote. I was in high school when this came out, and had several friends in bands. One guy was a singer for one and they would do shows at schools sometimes (dances and whatnot) and usually had Judith in their set list. But the schools didn’t allow them to cuss in the songs. So he would always scream “HUG YOUR DOG!” It’s been over 20 years and it still makes me laugh

As a Christian I absolutely love and appreciate this song. Maynard’s feelings and truth are as valid as anyone else’s, and deserve no less respect. And honestly, who would feel any different after experiencing what he has. The most important thing to me about God, the universe, or whatever you choose or not choose to believe in, is truth. And you can’t get much more raw, honest truth than this. And Paz! Can’t think of anyone else more suited to replace Kim Deal in The Pixies. What an absolute legend.

Yes, same here. Maynard's open honesty in all his writing is amazing.. Even as a Christian myself I can totally understand his pain and his point of view in this song. maynard's mother interpretation occults much deeper meaning regarding "ocean (of chaos)" of mind, by which TOOL encourages listeners to "(learn to) swim". "mer de noms" = sea of names. "threw you the obvious and you flew with it on your back, a name in your recollection, down among a million same. difficult not to feel a little bit disappointed, and passed over when i've looked right through, see you naked but oblivious. and you don't see me." marie is a name derived from word for the "sea". a "marinade", for instance, is a salty brine. anyways, try it out. don't just focus on maynard's mother, but "mother of mind", of a collective. recall "merkaba" lyrics: "omniscient, omnipotent, omnipresent, without judgement" (without condition) ...from 10000 days wings 2: "judith marie, unconditional oneeeeeeeee!"

This song is nearly the same story with my mom. I was raised Catholic, but at about age 18, I started asking questions and doing research, looking at history, and now I'm a full-fledged and open atheist and it wasn't due to same personal event in my life or my mom's situation; it was more naturally acquired. I think religion (well, certain religions) really stops people from thinking rationally and dims intellect. It has done far more negative things for humanity than good. That said, i don't go out of my way to get in people's face about; I'll debate and discuss in a friendly manner if they ask. Nice reaction 👍 BTW dig the ink and your style. look forward to more of your reactions!

Even though this video is over a year old, I’m glad I discovered it. I wasn’t sure at first, but I thought I’d give it a try, and I’m glad I did. Your eloquence and emotional expression are so accurate. Back in 2000, seeing the video the first time, I recall feeling this great amount of exhilaration. I was surprised, captivated and instantly wanted more, so, the excitement for the album was real, and I recall this anticipation to hear the album in its entirety. ‘Lateralus’ was released almost exactly a year later, so there was this period in between where I explored A Perfect Circle, ‘Mer De Noms’ in particular, and it was a remarkable journey, as I learned so much about Billy, and Maynard’s connection to him. Till this very day, listening to Judith and certain songs on the album, it resonates in such an undeniably powerful manner. I can only appreciate seeing a review where someone can show and describe how the music makes them feel, and what they can take from it and make it part of their lives. The impact it has on us is immense, that’s when we realize the power music has. Thank you for your video. I enjoyed it thoroughly.

You are missing a big part of the picture, namely APC's "passive", which is from a point of denial, where he can't even accept yet what happened to her - instead of the anger expressed in this, the acceptance in "Wings for Marie" and his depression in "Jimmy" - and the stage of bargaining probably in "sleeping beauty"...?

Just adding that Jimmy is personally my favorite song of the Judith cycle, I love the sonic landscape it paints, and the whole concept of him saving his 11 year old self from the trauma of what happened to Judith, how he was frozen there in that place. One of the best songs ever written imo. the lyrics are just so raw and honest, but it was obviously written out of love for a mother who is very sick. And then if you mix it with the instrumentals, you have a song that is actually saying the same thing. As a guitar player i wished i wrote those guitar riffs they are beautiful, especially that riff with the slider, they are so mournful. its very rare nowadays that we get songs where the lyrics, melodies and instrumentals are saying the same thing.

Love your reactions! Wings for Marie and 10,000 days is the next and final stage of particular struggle/journey in Maynard's life. Definitely worth a listen and to see where his perspective ultimately ends up. It's definitely emotionally powerful and the most beautiful love letter/eulogy to a mother I've ever heard.

Can't wait till you get to "wings for Marie 1&2"...still brings me to tears after a million listens. Judith, Jambi, Jimmy, The Patient...so many of the trifecta's material come for Maynard and his mother. A Perfect Circle is where you get to appreciate Maynard's vocal talent. I would like to see you review "3 Libra's" next... you'll understand when that moment comes in the song...when the music actually touches your soul, no cliche, ACTUALLY TOUCHES YOUR SOUL.

One of the best waltz you'll ever hear. One of the best rock videos to exist. I love the fact that you never really get a good look at his face for the entire video. I think it was the guy who directed Se7en who made this video. He basically did the same with John Doe for the majority of the film. Epic!!!

APC is actually Billy Howerdel’s band (guitarist). He is a roadie and is friends with Maynard and wanted to create a band. He made the band Ashes Divide because he felt APC was kind of turning into Maynard’s band. His Ashes Divide album (he only has done one so far) is absolutely amazing.

I'm tearing up as well listening to this while you react in this video. I relate as my mom was the same with Maynard's. She had autoimmune liver cirrhosis and she suffered painfully 'til her last breath and her faith went even stronger as she was deteriorating very badly.

A little more about Maynard , he is a very successful wine maker and his Signature wine is named Judith has won several prestigious awards . His Caduceus Cellar and Ostiaries are in Jerome, Az . I’ve been there several times and it was amazing to have his wine while enjoying his art and passion . Highly recommend a visit , and also “Blood into Wine” documentary .

Fun fact , his wife operates the Puscifer store next door to Caduceus which has a Barber shop downstairs , and I didn’t know at the time but his wife washed my hair before I got the haircut . When I walked upstairs to pay , someone told me that was Maynard’s wife . I’m glad I didn’t know because I’m such a nerd I would of said something to embarrass myself . Also , Judith is a little pricey, but if you like white wine , I recommend The Diddler , and I’m not a huge white wine drinker . Enjoy , and I’ll stop boring your channel with my dumb comments.

Loved the reaction, this song brings me to tears after I knew what it was about. People start to lose their faith and question WHY, then like you said "people say its gods plan" well his plan really sucks. I lost my dad last year cause someone pulled out in front of him while he was on his motorcycle and I started to ask WHY, why does a child molester or murderer get to live but my dad was taken from us. This song always hits home.

Subbed a while back and have been following your channel for a bit. I have been a Tool fan since mid 90's after running away from a strict/abusive "christian" home at the age of 15. Tool got me through a lot. Tool/ APC/Puscifer are equally tied for my favorite bands of all time, and anything MJK is a part of. His duet with Tori Amos "Mohammad my Friend", his collab with David Bowie "The Disco King" and the Deftones "Passenger" are some of my favorite songs, and I think you would enjoy them as well. Keep up the amazing content.

In case you were wondering Billy Howerdel is the leading founder of A Perfect Circle, he's the Guitarist writer and back up vocalist for the Band. He's the lead singer for Ashes Divide. Met him after a show once. Very humble man.I recommend listening to The Stone from Ashes Divide. A Perfect Circle sound with a different Vocal feeling

There is a short documentary some where online just about the making of the Judith video clip, When she ties her hair up in the video she couldn’t do it (tie it up) in the short time she had between base lines but they still put it in the clip regardless!

After that you should listen to "Jimmy" which is also a part of the evolving thought process about his mother and then the final conclusion from the 10.000 Days album (named after the time his mom suffered from her aneurysm and died, which was 27 years in total) "Wings for Marie" 1 and 2. Then you have his evolution on his thoughts on the whole subject.
