So it was the late 90's. This is a few years after Kurt Cobain died. Music was in the grips of the Napster revolution; it was the beginning of the end of the music industrial label system, but it hadn't happened yet. This was pre-Columbine, pre-9/11. Rock was really groping around looking for that next big thing. It was the era of Limp Bizkit and Korn (not that there is anything wrong with them); it was the gap between Grunge (if you could call it that) and New Metal. Deftones and Incubus were really big at the time. And then comes this song and this video, and it was unlike anything anyone had seen or heard. And then Spiders came out, and people began to realize that SOAD was a seriously talented band. They'd shed the kind of psycho-circus, punk aesthetic but retain their signature style. SOAD has aged rather well. Hope they come back together to make more music,

System of a Down is a solid kick in the chest. The first two albums are exactly how you described them, outspoken and unapologetic. Their simplicity in style and powerful message cut through all the bullshit of what was popular at the time. I think I saw them around 15 times in the early 2000s. The energy they brought to any venue was so explosive, I'll never forget them!
@pickthestickup7 ай бұрын
This was the song that introduced me to them. My local alt rock radio station played this sometimes, and 13 year old me was amazed. I had been learning and performing Carnatic vocal music since the age of 5 and was dipping my feet into heavier music. I was acclimated to screaming by Dragon Ball Z, ya know.... the whole cathartic explosion of power, very suitable for metal lol. So I was in the perfect place for metal to get its talons into me. I already loved Slipknot, Rage Against The Machine, Disturbed, Korn, Deftones, etc. And here was a man who screamed his head off, but also was unafraid of proudly showcasing his culture's musical traditions through vocal ornamentation, which was actually very much in the same quadrant of musical space as the type I practiced. I wanted to be in a metal band someday and if Serj can do it, so could I! SOAD is quite meaningful to me for that reason. Eventually after I entered highschool, I kinda moved on to heavier metal genres and got into death/thrash/black metal, but to this day I'm still grateful that SOAD let a South Asian-American kid dream.

Nice reaction, listened to System since their second album came out, got all of them since ofc, Their music is so entertaining, sometimes people don't even get the anger and resentment behind some of the messages they convey. Glad you enjoyed! 😀 This is a censored version of the clip for TV in '98, on CD there is no *bleep*ing censorship! (pretty sure the CD version is on youtube too, just lookup any song with "dirty" "uncensored" or "CD version" attached to it, lot of rock/rap isn't getting through the algorithm anymore, might have to dig a bit)

I remember when I first heard this back in the day, I had the same reaction lol. I knew I had to know more about this band and I've been a fan ever since, even though they actually didn't have a very long run before a lot of inactivity save for occasional concerts. And that opening skit, from a late 90s video is SOOO PERFECT for today, with the attempts by our government to shut down TikTok cause they have become a news outlet and organization tool for causes that they and the corporate media don't like and with Meta itself with zero notice shutting off any political content from peoples feeds on Insta and Facebook, they don't like that so many people are awake to how badly we are screwed on a daily basis and so they are busy doing all they can to distract and outright ban any news or info sources that don't push their specific propaganda.

When I saw them at Ozzfest and they started this song, the crowd exploded. I say started because they got up to the "What do I feel, what do I say" section and just stopped. A musical cock-block if there ever was one. They played about three more songs and then, without warning, they jumped back onto Sugar and finished it. What an incredible show!

Hi Aileen, I don't know if someone has already suggested this to you, but since you mentioned multiple times in your various videos that you like reacting to and experiencing new bands I thought I'd suggest something totally different to what you normally try listening to - The HU. They are a heavy metal Mongolian band that use traditional instruments mixed with heavy metal sound and throat singing. I've never heard of them until a few years back and am completely in love with their sound. It would be amazing if you could give them a listen and react to their Wolf Totem song. Thank you also very much for all of your reaction videos - really enjoy watching them a lot! 😁

Beautiful reaction to this System of a Down video 😊👍 I went back and watched all of your reactions and I have to say that this band who is from Armenia yes they are Christian in a sense that there is Christian basics in Armenia... You hit the nail on the head this band speaks social commentary with little regard to what others may think of their commentary..they're speaking truth and truth has a way of getting out and making sense 😊👍 Your analysis is spot on you are not overthinking you are having a great grasp on what they are saying... For this particular reaction video the way the world is they don't want the people to know what's going on and when per chance the people do figure out what's going on those in charge yes spank a little sugar on the situation to calm down protesting angst and just tell the people to look the other way no concern here nothing to see here... The band uses their platform to tell the truth about the events of the day Have a great day you and Arya 😊👍
