In dragon ball, time traveling is more like traveling to a new dimension, a separate timeline that has no connection to your own. Kid Trunks and Future Trunks don't share the same childhood AT ALL, so while Kid Trunks is technically growing up with Mai, Future Trunks met her in an entirely different scenario.

Goku's Instant transmission: - you need somebody else at the destination to lock on his energy and teleport there (yes ,it's a faster traveling method than whis's , but if there is nobody at the destination then it's useless,Whis doesn't need nobody ) - limited in distance by the power of the target ,if you want to travel further then you need a powerful character there Whis's method: - slower than instant transmission ( 26 minutes from Beerus place to the Earth even though Whis it's fast as hell) - nobody else it's required Kai instant transmission: - can teleport anywhere without needing to lock on - nobody else it's required - it's faster than Goku's Instant Transmission ( which requires concentrating the ki in his fingers and touching his forehead because of the extra signs ) If a Kai,Goku and Whis would be to participate in a race from Beerus place to the Earth then the Kai would win , 2nd and 3rd places are debatable ( if the Earth has a population no more then Goku can't use Instant Transmission , so he will need to use his flight ,which it's slower than Whis's). We know that Goku can now survive in the space ( he fought Beerus in space), but for how long? Is he like Frieza where it doesn't affect him? Time travel in dragon ball is different time lines so in the timeline the future trunks is from goku died from the heart virus before the androids even showed up and then basically everyone else was killed by them. Then trunks killed them and the world started to rebuild. But kid trunks is the one from the timeline we see most of the time where he had a pretty normal life apart from the buu saga.

It might be time to explain the Pilaf, Mai and Shu situation: so these 3 are from the original Dragonball and were the first group of antagonists, Pilaf is a rich guy who uses inherited money to buy anything and everything he wants, but he wants the dragonballs to wish to be ruler of the earth, Mai and Shu are his hired goons; because they are looking for the dragonballs at the same time as Goku and Bulma (and eventually Yamcha, Oolong, and Puar join them) and so they encounter each other a few times, with Pilaf and his crew using purchased robot battle suits and things like that to stand up against Kid Goku even though they are all adults (Pilaf is still short though, roughly Kid Goku's size) Eventually they get completely outclassed by other villains when the Red Ribbon Army and ESPECIALLY King Piccolo enter the story. They reappear in Super as kids because sometime before the android saga they DID succesfully find all the dragonballs and summon the dragon, but they were so old at this point that they wished to be younger, thinking they could find the balls again next year to wish for world domination, but because they didn't specify what age they wanted to be, Shenron made them TOO young, and they became toddlers, and needed to wait to grow up more to search for the balls again because it's usually dangerous to hunt them, and this is when they re-enter the story at the start of the Battle of the Gods movie, as kids roughly Trunks' age trying to steal the Dragonballs from Bulma's party, but that goes wrong and they decide to just hang around and grow up at Bulma's, because she's so rich and has so much space that they just have easy lives now. So it IS pretty weird that Trunks and Mai are paired up, as she is like a 40-50 year old woman's mind in a young girl's body

When Trunks went back in time in DBZ, he was trying to change the past, even though it wouldn't affect his future. This time he's going back in time to get help to save his own time. In regards to Instant Transmission, Goku is teleporting while Whis is just moving really fast.
