Ugh, I just got back from a 7 hr road trip, not fun! But if you haven't already, make sure you've watched my Emergency snack video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fIqVdZdmob6LaNU , my Snack video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH2QcoFvo5ihgaM and also my AIP travel one: kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJ7bhJalpZybZtU . These should give you a long list of things that are safe to eat so that you don't feel as overwhelmed, but feel free to ask more questions as well.

Thank you so much for all the great ideas. I'm a beginner at this and it is so nice to have all these ideas to turn to. I am trying so many new foods. I was really concerned that things wouldn't taste good or would be too bland. I am not encountering that at all. I have always had mayo with my steamed broccoli, but recently tried coconut oil instead and it was really good. I am really enjoying learning all the new ways to cook things.

I add in shredded radish, carrot, celery and cabbage, add fresh herbs like cilantro or parsley ans a bit of green onion. It’s like a tuna coleslaw. If I’m wanting a sweet addition I add raisins before or diced apple. It’s perfect for a lunch! I was vegan for 3 years before switching to AIP so I have lots of experience making sauces with avocado or coconut! If you want a creamy avocado ranch type dressing, use coconut milk instead of oil. Add lemon instead of lime and add fresh or dried dill, parsley and basil. Mince one clove of garlic and the top of one green onion, diced. Blend with immersion blender. Depending on how much coconut milk you use you can make it thick like a dip or runny like a salad dressing.

Great ideas! I also have a salmon salad that I like to do like this that is basically my AIP mayo/dressing sub (mine is olive oil or avocado oil, little vinegar, and seasonings that would be consistent with mayo + little lemon juice and some dill) with canned salmon and cubed cucumbers. Thanks for reminding me about this!

Thank you so much for this. We visit family 2-3 times every week. We are so fortunate that our adult children all live locally. I’ve had such a huge problem with meals out, though. The family is incredibly supportive, and they often sacrifice where or what they’d really like to eat out of consideration for me. Now that I’ve watched your video, however, I feel hopeful! What you described are all of my favorite, easy prep foods. God bless you and thank you so much.

hmm... I haven't looked at the Whole Foods guac in a while but I kind of recall that they have little tiny bits of tomato in them, don't they? Or I could be crazy (more likely, lol). Michele Spring Correct! It’s made in the store - Whole Foods brand name. It’s yummy! 🤗 How long have you done AIP? I ate a Paleo diet for about 2.5 years until I was exposed to mold. Then, major food sensitivities took over. So, I eat a low histamine, AIP diet and have been doing so for 1.5 years. Praying one day I can reintroduce eggs, nuts, seeds, coffee and chocolate/carob.

@@brendaschwieterman1350 I'm actually just on a mainly Paleo-style diet now. I've done AIP twice - once for a year with reintros back in 2014 and then again in 2018 for a few months after suffering from a big flare after just trying gluten-free for a while. Do you have any suggestions for people who are vegetarian...I can't eat meat but I want to do this Diet because of my thyroid. All your food idea looks yummy!
@MicheleSpring
@MicheleSpring 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks! So... I usually recommend that those who are vegetarian or vegan eat bowl-style - adding a variety of vegetables, some fruit, and some fat into each bowl. And maybe a sauce (see this video for some ideas on sauces: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a5awfJyZZZikr5o ). These are some tips on making veggies taste better - some of which you may already know, but it might give some ideas of meals: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jHXUpaqabtaiZsU . And then I'm not a nutritionist or doc so can't recommend supplements, but I'd work with one if you can just to make sure you're getting the necessary vitamins/minerals you need to make sure your immune system functions at its best. Typically we recommend one eat organ meats and seafood to get many of these nutrients, but you'll have to see if you can get these from a supplemental source.

They don't sell canned chicken and salmon where I live. Nor do they sell plantain or cassava chips. And I can't eat avocado or any of the fruits you mentioned (esp dried!) I guess I'm just screwed.
@MicheleSpring
@MicheleSpring 5 жыл бұрын
where are you? I know both Amazon and Thrive Market in the US have Wild Planet canned chicken, and salmon, Safe Catch Salmon, and both plantain and cassava chips, so I'd order them if you're in the US. My stores don't carry cassava chips so I have to order them too. A lot of AIP-specific convenience items are unfortunately not available in stores sometimes. If you aren't in the US and can't order them, cook up some chicken thighs or breast and freeze it in small, individual-sized portions. Then you can just thaw overnight in the fridge or quickly in the microwave or on the stove and use exactly the same as a canned variety. As for the avocado - do a search on AIP mayo - there are a lot of different recipes out there that you can make that don't use avocado and find one that works for your restrictions. And just omit the fruits. You definitely do not need them - they are just part of a recipe but are no means necessary. Please don't be afraid to modify recipes to suit your needs! Creativity (and a positive, can-do attitude) will help you out a LOT on a diet like this :-)

Hopefully you got more info on that from the "What to Know before starting AIP" video - but also, have you eaten gluten up to this point? I keep forgetting to mention that, but that is one HUGE factor in some people having really bad symptoms the first few weeks as you literally have to go through withdrawal from gluten as if it were a drug. Gluten binds to the same receptors as opiates, so when you come off it it's not fun nor pretty. So not sure if that applies to you or not, but if it does, that could definitely be another reason why you're feeling so bad.

My dietician is encouraging me to go plant based. What are your thoughts?
@MicheleSpring
@MicheleSpring 6 жыл бұрын
Hmm, I personally, from looking at the research and from my training think that it's REALLY hard without meat and seafood to get all the nutrients you need to really have your immune function work and regulate properly if you have an autoimmune disease. Meat and seafood just offer so much bang for your buck nutrient-wise (especially organ meats and seafood). And your body just needs more than an average person to regulate the immune system and recognize that it's producing autoantibodies (antibodies against your own tissue) - and then stop producing those autoantibodies. HOWEVER, that being said, I do think the average person eats too much meat and we should all be eating way more veggies than meat. Like meat should be treated as a side or a condiment and the veggies should be the star of the plate. So, remember I'm not a dietician, but my recommendation for an ideal plate would be a 3/4 of a plate of different veggies, a small piece of meat or seafood, some fat (like avocado or olives), and some fermented foods. (For an example, look at this (though there isn't any fermented food on it): instagram.com/p/BoZklJRBs8c/?taken-by=thrivingonpaleo
@gdgirouard
@gdgirouard 6 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Your explanation makes sense. I typically eat just as you described. I eat between 1-2 ounces of meat per meal and 3/4 of my plate is vegetables.

Yes definitely. This is true of most dried berries - same thing with dried cherries and blueberries. But there ARE some out there. I know I had a brand that I got at Natural Grocers but of course I can't remember what the name of it is at the moment. I typically just make my own though since it's so easy and cheap - especially this time of year!

I'm confused, why do you call it Auto Immune Paleo? AIP is short for Auto Immune Protocol. I suppose it is Paleo friendly but I think that could be misleading for those that are actually ill and looking for recipes in the very limited set of allowable foods, and not just trying to jump on a no grain bandwagon.
@MicheleSpring
@MicheleSpring 5 жыл бұрын
I call it Autoimmune Paleo because that's the diet I recommend and encourage those with autoimmune diseases to try to help with their symptoms. Autoimmune Protocol and Autoimmune Paleo are pretty much interchangeable (with just one or two differences like the use of black pepper during the elimination phase), and and I believe both were originally derived from the Paleo diet anyway. But the version I recommend is literally a subset of the Paleo diet created by Dr. Sarah Ballanytne. They're both AIP, which I know gets confusing, but they are so similar it's really nitpicking to differentiate them, but Dr. Ballantyne has used science-backed research to make sure all of the foods eliminated and recommended are beneficial for those with autoimmune disease. Grains (watch this video if you haven't already to learn why grains can be so bad for AI disease: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oH_TepqYl7NmgK8) are one of the biggest offenders to us, so that's why we cut them out. Not because of some bandwagon or that someone tells us to for the heck of it - it's backed by science that grains can cause leaky gut, inflammation, and therefore autoimmune symptoms! Trust me, I've tested this a billion times on myself and most grains cause flares for me - wish I could eat them on a regular basis but it's not meant to be! But don't worry - any AIP diet recipe should be fine if you're on AIP.
@dannmartinez2145
@dannmartinez2145 4 жыл бұрын
@@MicheleSpring There are quite a few things different in the AIP and Paleo diets. They are not interchangable. One major difference is eggs. No eggs on AIP. Almost all breakfast recipes I have seen on Paleo contain eggs. Another big difference is nightshades--tomatoes, peppers, eggplant, some berries and other things.
@MicheleSpring
@MicheleSpring 4 жыл бұрын
@@dannmartinez2145 I never said they were interchangeble. The version of AIP I talk about is based on Paleo - it's Paleo with eggs, nightshades, nuts, seeds, etc removed. The other versions of AIP are not using Paleo as their base, so it gets confusing.
