AIPAC Meltdown Underway As Power Slips From Their Grasp

Ryan Grim joins the program by phone, and he, Sam, and Emma start off by recapping the calamitous end of Kristi Noem’s book tour, with the last stop on Stuart Varney’s Fox Business show looking like the breaking point. They then discuss how AIPAC has been slightly neutralized in the election cycle this year, and, per Ryan’s reporting and analysis, the fear some in the organization are feeling that they don’t possess the same sway over Biden given his decision to withhold some aid to Israel over the prospect of a Rafah invasion, AND that they haven’t been as impactful or decisive in Democratic primaries, specifically against Squad members. Ryan outlines some of the equivocating that Bidenworld has done after Biden’s comments on withholding aid, and Grim zeroes in on the cleavage between the Biden administration officials responsible for military and intelligence actions (Defense Secretary Austin & CIA Director Burns) who are in negotiations with Israel & Palestine, compared to that of the diplomatic and political actors (Secretary of State Blinken & Biden’s Chief of Staff Jeff Zients) who have been much more deferential both publicly and privately towards Israel. They then discuss the terrible implications for the U.S., Palestinians, and even Israeli soldiers in terms of casualties and damage if a large scale ground invasion of Rafah occurs, and how, even if Biden and Netanyahu may understand those implications, they may be too involved ideologically to try and put a real stop to it.

Victor Orban is very pro Israel, but Putin is definitely not. Describing Putin as right-wing doesn't really work because Russian politics is not the same as in America. Putin has the right view on Israel, condemning its abuse of Palestinians. Putin is fed up with the West and hardly is a fan of what America is doing in the Middle East. In this he is entirely correct. His critique of US militarism sounds more like the critiques you hear from progressives and libertarians who dissent from the Washington war mongering. Putin isn't always wrong. Some of what he says is ludicrous, but a great deal of his critique in the way of foreign policy is very sound.

Pakman is pretty good on most things, but there definitely are things like this that he’s not great about. When he talked about the president of Bolivia getting overthrown, he analyzed it from the perspective of Evo Morales trying to get the Constitution changed so he could stay in office and likened it to Trump trying to stay in office. He was looking at it from the perspective of someone living in a semi-stable democracy rather than looking at why Morales was doing what he did because of what he was facing with the US backed fascist monied interests arrayed against him. Normally I would agree that if a president tried to stay in office extra-Constitutionally, that would be an indicator of potential authoritarian tendencies. But Morales had no one as popular that could succeed him to carry on his legacy against the elite monied interests of Bolivia and was up against the worst of the worst Christofascists. So he had to try to stay in office because he had no other choice considering what he was up against. If anyone has watched the movie James Bond: Quantum of Solace, the plot with the shadowy group of billionaires taking Bolivians’ water rights and way over charging them for water was exactly what happened; except that it was Bechtel (or a similar corp; I can’t specifically remember) that did it. That’s why Morales was elected into office by the rural people of Bolivia; it was all about the people getting screwed over water. They weren’t even allowed to collect rainwater off their own roofs. The coup against him was backed by the US for American corporate interests. Pakman’s analysis of the situation was incredibly shallow and he wasn’t taking into account any of this. I don’t know if he just doesn’t know; or he intentionally left it out because he’s a definite liberal and isn’t as progressive as he makes himself out to be. 🤷🏻‍♀️ These water rights issues will be coming to the US at some point in the future as well. I have already heard of municipalities where city water services were sold off to private interests and prices skyrocketed and people were no longer allowed to collect rainwater from their roofs, just like in Bolivia. Corporate fascism is coming if we don’t stop the take over.
