Air Canada is preparing for a temporary shutdown of its operations as it struggles to reach a crucial deal with unions representing pilots seeking better working conditions, as was achieved for pilots of airlines in the neighbouring United States.

Air Canada management would rather shut down the airline and leave thousands of passengers stranded than give their pilot a fair contract and competitive wages for an international airline. Top executives are giving themselves huge bonuses while in 2024, a pilot makes half what they were making back in 2003. The employees saved the airline from bankruptcy and took a paycut, now that the airline if profitable again, it's time to pay back. Pilots don't want a RAISE, they want their 2003 wages back adjusted for inflation

The share holders are greedy as usual. There are flight attendants who earn less than minimum wages. If ppl think working for the airline is a great industry, it needs to be scrapped and redesigned to pay their employees. Crews are not paid for boarding, which is the most difficult part of the trip. Passengers will be paying more.

Wide body captains make $354,000. That means they turned down $106,000 wage increase over 3 years. In 2023, depending on the type of aircraft they fly, Air Canada captains earned on average between $215,075 and $351,958 per year. The average narrow body aircraft pilot works 13.31 days per month and the average wide-body aircraft pilot works 11.78 days per month.

I am glad the pilots are fighting hard for a better contact and a strike will happen. Even though their contract is better in general compared to the flight attendants, the pilots do need a major upgrade. Now everyone will have their eyes on the flight attendants next year for AC Mainline & Rouge. Their contracts is horrible, especially for Rouge. All flight attendants across the board are in favor for a strike and I hope it does happen for them. Flight attendants need better working conditions, major pay raise since Canadas inflation and recession is messing up people’s lives, the company needs to understand the FA’s take care of many lives just like the pilots do. It’s great to see both the FA’s and pilots are supporting each other during times like this

I can't speak about today, but 25 or so years ago, Air Canada had 4 major unions. I was asked to spend a couple of days on a consultative basis with them. It was instructive to have their leaders in the same room at the same time. All good people, all with strong opinions. They didn't seem to be the best of friends. This video makes it sound like it's more than just the pilots union involved in the potential job action. If so, good on them for working together for better pay and conditions.

@glencomerford5730 All the union groups took a 10 year contract and pay cuts, the pilots were the only ones able to break their contract a year early. A potential $106,000 raise that they turned down is more then most people gross in a year. With the raise top pilot's would get approximately $460,000. The ones that need the raise is the co-pilots, maybe give them 40% and captains 20%, or something like that. Comparing Canadian to US wages is apples to oranges. It’s not the 100000 pay increase that they’re complaining about. They fail to recognize that a new hire pilot starts at 58000 and only has small increases for 4 years. This leads to a scenario where qualified candidates are unwilling to come when you have to leave a $150000+ a year job.

The West (in general) hates AC because some still see it as 'government', because its HQ (by law) is in Montreal, and because some of the beloved Western startups (think Wardair) didn't survive. The fact that the government tried to support them just is not believed. Now the West has Westjet to love. Not mentioned in your report: AC's first offer to pilots was 30% over three years with 20 of that in the first year. That will not work as the pay gap (and taxation and housing costs compared to the USA) is so enormous. Would 40% and faster satisfy the pilots? They would probably say its a good start. Me? Pilots deserve a competitive pay. However an issue that will arise is this will spike prices even more when AC is already the most expensive and lowest value mainline carrier in the world. It costs more to fly AC business class than Emirates to Dubai while getting worse and less service. Its more than ANA from YVR to NRT than ANA and more than Lufthansa to Frankfurt. Point redemptions for aeroplan is also more on AC than redeeming for Star Alliance partners. Last year I booked YOW to SIN with 5 day stop in DXB, if I had done AC economy class it was going to be 210k points, I did AC to london with 1 day layover (was economy for this) then the rest was Emirates Business class on A380 for 154k points. They need to improve service across the board and remove the YYZ bottleneck

raising pilot wages will barely result in any raise in the tickets. It will likely be less than 10$ per trip and you will finally get pilots that are motivated to fly the flag and give customers the great service they deserve.
