Canada’s largest airline has been ordered to pay a family of five who were separated on what’s being described as a “traumatizing” flight last year.
Last month, the Small Claims Court of Nova Scotia found the family was entitled to $4,199.35 in compensation from Air Canada for their extended visit to India. The Halifax family was seeking a full refund, flight delay compensation and damages worth a total of $20,000.
Ella MacDonald reports.

Traumatizing… there are way worse things in life than that. If you can’t handle a few rerouting or taking care of a one year-old by yourself, I think you have bigger problems.

Give your head a shake people! This isn’t about whether the experience was traumatic or not, this was about fighting back against the refusal of Air Canada to take responsibility. Air Canada regularly ignores passenger rights regulations and has to be taken to court and forced to comply with the law. I am disgusted by the antics of WestJet and Air Canada. They treat customers like it is a privilege to fly rather than a service they are providing for money.

Well said, it's the regulations and you should get what you're entitled to when the airline doesn't hold up their end of the contract. I'm sure all the nay-sayers would do the same thing if they had the chance. I know I would, and I have and walked away with more money than what my flight cost me. Airlines need to be held accountable.

meanwhile 100 years ago people were travelling on ships to immigrate to North America and hoped they’d live, people are so soft. Travel is a privilege, not a right and make plans to leave your kids at home if you can’t handle unforeseen changes.

For those people saying stuff happens and they should just suck it up, well that's not what the law says anywhere. At a minimum they are entitled to get a suitable rerouting and having to switch airports with a family of 5 is not suitable. Connecting in Delhi is challenging to say the least because you are dealing with a 15 minute drive, minimum between the domestic and international terminals in a taxi. This isn't like any modern airport where you maybe walk to a different gate or terminal, this is a huge deal. And for Newark, well that's also challenging too. You have to clear US immigration, collect your bags, clear customs, transfer your bags to another terminal and go through security. I am a seasoned traveller, I've got Nexus and everything set up. I can go through that process in maybe 30 to 45 minutes on a good day. But for inexperienced travellers (which by the way most people are) who don't have Nexus or have a game plan ahead of time, it can be a real pain. Plus their family was separated which is illegal under the law (Canadian law states that families must be seated by their children to protect them from creeps).

I thought the kids were put on a different plane hence the word 'traumatizing'. If they were legally owed compensation they they should get it but can they stop abusing a word because they were INCONVENIENCED?

100 years ago, people travelled across the globe in the belly of a ship for weeks on end and were grateful for the opportunity. Today, people are "traumatized" because they are "inconvenienced" due to a re-route and not being able to sit together for a few hours. Traumatizing indeed 🙄

@@troyjollimore4100 Are you now? 🤣🤣🤣 And what exactly would I be complaining about? That sometimes life happens and things don't work out? Most of us understand this very fundamental part of life and we move on. Our family has been put on separate flights before, yet we survived without having to visit a psychologist for such undue hardships bestowed upon us. Stories like this just confirm what an entitled and soft society we've become where the littlest of things can trigger us into some form of mental anguish - but at least money heals all wounds. Muppet.

JOKE.😂 1) If you flying with family then book like this. Pay for your seats in advance! And accordingly. (By well research, be ready for any change if both parent are travelling with 3-4 kids) 2) if you say word traumatizing, try to travel in local train in India with family members. That is trauma in real world.
