I used to work at a scrap yard, and we scraped a lot of trucks that were in the same condition as the ones here. Bruce is taking two trucks that could have been scrap, and turning them into one great truck. No need to be so pissy that the international didn’t get a frame off restoration, be so the whole thing could have just been turned into Pittsburgh tools.

Use a longer straight edge like a 8’ level to make sure the frames are straight. Top and sides. Now that the left side is tacked, please accurately measure from center of front axle to center of each rear axle on both sides to be sure you’re square. No guarantees the axle alignment was good on the white truck. Measure, measure and measure again. Wish you had used a stick welder, better penetration. Hope this helps, from an old welder and truck guy.

hi bruce. i don't know if i misheard something but are you going to use c channel on the inside of the frame or just plate? c channel would provide better torsional rigidity. i also advise at least a few feet on either side of the joint. It will be stronger than original. i watched the peterbilt stretch too. the channel would also help to align things. just smear some grease on the c channel after finalizing measurements. and put it on with a plate on the outside, too. Then tack it all then bolt it. You will need a magnetic base drill press to make straight cuts. that's how autocar did in years back. very tough. then weld weld weld. i recommend using a stick welder like many others here. for such thick metal it might need the higher amperage and heat. it fills in better too. mig may be best left to bodywork and thinner metal, which won't warp things with too much heat. one last thing, and I know you ain't dumb, but measure measure measure !!!

Bruce. When i was learning to weld in college, our teacher said 'as long as the metal ends up as one piece, then it's good.' The only thing is if the weld is messy it needs more cleaning up. But if you're happy and no one can find an issue with it, then it's good.

Take out all the new and shiny parts off that white one including the tanks and cab flares and put it on the AF truck.

I've been critical in the past but I know from your comment you checked out EZRIDER 359 stretch. Looks good, a little double frame it's golden. I was wondering if you plan to fill in old holes and grind it out so it is smooth frame? I drove a 1973, 1975 , 1978 in the 70's (yes I'm old) and this model in 1981. Most of these IH trucks CO had a standard WB of 183". This stretch on these trucks would be representative of west coast trucks and bridge laws. Back then a small drom you could haul even more weight but I don't remember the numbers.

Are you going to bolt a steel plate inside the frame rails where the welds are or it's ok with just the welds ? Continue your great work Brucie 🤟🏻
@twist27234 жыл бұрын
I honestly wouldn’t trust that seam to support 46,000 lbs at 70 mph, with that gap. Not knocking your welding, but as a truck driver of long frame trucks for almost 20 years, that was horribly unsettling to watch.
@cactusjack18064 жыл бұрын
The seam weld is just for looks basically. The double frame patch is for structural integrity.

It’s fine as long as it gets properly plated in the inside frame. With what I’ve seen so far it’s not guaranteed it will get plates. 😁
@tn65s4 жыл бұрын
You plate the outside so cross members fit.
@Fleetsuper4 жыл бұрын
tom doore it all depends on where the crossmember needs to be. I’ve worked on numerous trucks with plates on the inside of the frame

My advice, powerwash and degrease first. Use only a cutting disk for a nice straight cut, stick weld and double frame atleast 3' either side of each weld is a must!!!!!! 3/4 milwaukee mag is our choice of drills. We have done many stretches. I always prefer adding frame to back end for one weld point. But still, entertaining thanks.

If you have to jack up the back half to make it meet the truck, won't that raise the front rear axle up a little & put more strain / weight on the (rear) rear axle?

@brandoncaldwell954 жыл бұрын
@@mattmodey5899 youre looking at it wrong if you cant see it. Look at the weld back and the weld to the front. The rear leans at an axle while the front half is level. I know what smaller tires does as I've "chopper/drag style" a beater rwd pickup with tractor tires before keeping the front stock. The frame wasn't properly leveled out entirly. Leaving the rear to be welded back leaning while the front was level. If you think a small 1'x1' level will show the entire frame was plumb let alone sliding it proving a "smoother transition" is level then i cant help you.
