The conversation after this scene, still memorable to this date. Have to admit, he's got a point. Ivan Korshunov : I know what you're thinking, First Lady. You want me dead. Well, it might come to that. In the war, people die. Grace : This isn't war! You just murdered an unarmed woman. Ivan Korshunov : You of all people, who murdered a 100,000 Iraqis to save a nickel on a gallon of gas. Are going to lecture me about the rules of war? DON'T!

Too bad that it was Iraq that started the whole ordeal by invading Kuwait. Then they set fire to over 600 Kuwaiti oil wells, destroying the economy of the country and causing massive environmetal damage. @@viggianoj I won't argue with you there, I saw this in theaters in my late teens, and this scene really tore me up, movie or not. In hindsight, I'm not surprised that the gunshot came before he reached 10, cause how good are villains at keeping their word, at least in media? A very small percentage, and I'm sorry but I'm not counting slasher movie villains here. While hearing the shot was intense enough, and I'm glad it was implied, hearing Melanie and the first Lady crying, it can hit anyone pretty hard, I got rather invested in certain characters, Melanie included. I agree with your comment and I'm glad to finally know that I'm not the only one who was hit rather hard by this scene. I've heard the film crew hated it too. In the briefing room, everyone there seemed not only horrified, but very saddened: Willaim H Macy's reaction pretty much mirrored mine to a tee .....except I actually cried the first couple times watching it. But nowadays, in my early 40s, this scene enrages me esp after Korshunov screams at Mrs. Marshall regarding the rules of war. But I think part of his goal here was instigating and of course added intimidation so, I'd say it worked a little too well, for audiences too! I mean weren't most audiences already scared of his character before this scene, cause once againI have to wonder? Anyway thanks for your comment, and proving my point with this scene, but sorry my comment was so long, mine are like that sometimes.

I didn't/don't get it and still don't, even now. On that note, and I know I'm taking a big chance with this question on here but I'm curious: his comment regarding the gulf war, did the US really start that war for the reasons he said, or did we step in for other reasons? I'd prefer a non biased answer please, I know it's just a movie but I've been curious about this for years and this scene reawakens said curiosity..

Motives for war can't be boiled down to something as simple as 'the Americans did it for the oil'. But the fact is, oil is one of the fundamental pillars of modern civilisation and it is a finite resource. Is it worth killing tens of thousands of people to secure access to it for your nation? I say no, but people with the power to order the deaths of that many people don't often get to where they are by being humane, or kind, or empathic. I would much sooner believe that securing American interests - including oil - was the motive for the wars in the middle east than I'd believe it was to save or help non-Americans.
@rtxranger7482 Жыл бұрын
Short answer? Yes. Saddam wanted to sell Oil in Euro. Bush and his Neo supporters wanted to make oil available to the market and well, gave Saddam the green signal to invade Kuwait. Then turned on him and told the world, Sadddam had WMD and blah blah blah. Fun Fact: Before the night of Operation Desert Storm In 1991, Saddam actually started to pull his forces away from Kuwait because the coalition threaned to attack if he didn't. But the moment he started to pull them away, the US ordered the attack. Average Americans are doped into believing everything the media tells them. The American people are just honest hard working people. Sadly, those 1% who are ruling it are evil.
@sujitbala1492 Жыл бұрын
@@squeemlives You summed it up pretty well - very hard to find non biased answers on the internet nowadays. However something most Americans including me will agree is that the Invasion of Iraq 2003 was certainly unjustified in every way and the 9/11 and WMDs were a blatant excuse to get away with the oil.
@specialk9424 Жыл бұрын
Settle in, this may be a long one. Admittedly, I was in 3rd grade when all that went down, and being 10, I didn't care that much, but I still remember watching it happen every night. The gist of it is, Saddam invaded Kuwait, because he wanted the oil fields, and a bigger control of the world oil market. He just invaded another country. Just like what Putin is doing now, in Ukraine, just walked in and said "This is mine, now. You don't like it, tough shit." The Kuwaiti government and the Saudi government asked us for help. We deployed to Saudi Arabia, to keep Saddam from invading them next, and gaining more control of the oil market. So, our reasons were not totally altruistic, nor economics based, but a combination of both. The world couldn't tolerate an asshole like Saddam Hussain controlling that much of the world oil market, because it could effectively make him a world ruler, since the world runs on oil. President Bush gave him a deadline to get the hell out of Kuwait, or we would go in and TAKE him out, and Saddam was like "Nah, bitch, you won't do shit. Kuwait's mine now, fuck off." The deadline came and went, and we came, we saw, we kicked his ass. The part Gary Oldman was talking about, the killing 100,000 Iraqis to save a nickel on a gallon of gas, the military goes to great lengths to avoid civilian casualties. Nobody wants to be seen as a butcher of women and children. I'm gonna try to boil down the Law of Armed Conflict, the short version is, schools, hospitals, places of worship, anything that doesn't contribute to the enemy's war effort, is off limits. You can bomb factories and such, because they build tanks or aircraft, or whatever, but you can't attack a hospital, because killing wounded patients, that's just fucked up. That's why medical facilities are marked with a Red Cross, and churches and mosques are marked with crosses or crescent moons. However, when you move military assets, like surface to air missile launchers, or ammo dumps, or anything military related to those places, they lose their protected status. It's illegal to move those assets there, precisely because it removes protected status from a school or hospital, or whatever. Well, that's what Saddam did, he moved military assets to protected areas, and was striking at coalition forces. Would you respect a soldier who used a child as a human shield? Of course you wouldn't. But that's what Saddam was doing, with his own people. He had his military hiding behind children. So, you take out the military target. And you try to live with yourself, knowing the collateral damage. To the point of the "nickel on a gallon of gas" quote, yes, the US led coalition took action against Iraq, to keep oil prices down. The 100,000 civilians died because their "leader" hid behind them like a gutless yellow turd, when his bullying didn't work. So, there's plenty of blame to go around, but the fact remains, if Saddam had not started none, there wouldn't have been none. Long winded, but I hope this helped.

@viggianoj Nah. By this point the stakes are clearly as high as it gets. The Oldman character has already point-blank killed a guy to make a point, the fuel issues on the plane are established, the danger of releasing a terrorist and negotiating with other terrorists are established, and so on. This scene was gratuitous and unnecessary. It's like if in DIE HARD, when Holly asks Hans if the pregnant lady can sit down, Hans responds by telling one of his goons to kill her.
