I totally agree there are pros and cons. I’m in the Guard and love it. Another pro is the TSP ( Thrift saving Plan) if you put in money the Air Force will match you up to so much. And TriCare Reserve Select is an amazing benefit especially with the rising cost of health care. Another pro is if your in curtain jobs you can see alot of the world. My unit gets deployed pretty regularly we are on a 4 year rotation. The con to that is being away from your family during training and deployment. But I still love the Guard and it’s a blessing to have those benefits for my family.

Timothy Julien they are basically the same the only big difference is that the guard can be mobilized by the President and the Governor. Where the Reserves only get mobilized by the President.

We fools In the Army get a minimum of nine month deployment unless we are special forces who get six months but deploy even more. Then there's the fact that Army people have to wear all that bullshit infantry gear and keep account of it and work their asses off in the worlds hottest weather.

Thank you for sharing your experience! I served 9 years in The Army National Guard, from 1996 to 2005. Since then, I worked in the private sector and obtained a degree, a BS in Management. I recently took a job with the VA and working with other veterans lot a spark inside of me. I went to The Army National Guard first, and they are saying I would have to redo basic training, but keep my pay grade, E-5. The Air Force Reserve would not make me go to basic training and I would keep my E-5. With my degree, I would prefer to become an officer. I will continue to work with my recruiter to see what is the best fit for me.

Dena Nebergall I’m in the Guard and I went in at 35 and I love it. As far as the fitness depending on the needs of the Air Force as for active duty maybe an issue but you maybe able to get a waver for the reserve or Guard.

I was an AH-64D Apache gunship crewchief in the Army (enlisted), deployed for too many years in the sandbox, got out, and finished my engineering degree. I always wanted to be a pilot, and am exploring the possibility of getting an AFRC commission. I am a NASA engineer, with a family. From what I gather in the AFRC Pilot Handbook, it seems a big ask to take military leave from my federal job for 2+ years to go through OCS & UFT, just to be a traditional reservist. I know there's a huge advantage in being a federal employee with respect to joining the reserves, but the agency could balk at that extended absence, despite the letter of the law. The top-level recruiter said that there's a significant pilot shortage, and aside from pilots, legal, medical, and chaplaincy positions, the Reserve commands generally turn down off-the-street candidates, reserving them for officers/enlisted already in uniform. I'd like to fly Pavehawks out of Patrick AFB, since it's along my morning commute, I'm already familiar with the rotary-wing community, and they often support launches at Kennedy & Capeside. Please tell me what you can about the length of the pilot pipeline, and alternatively the typical duration of non-pilot officer training. Your advice will help me decide whether I can parallel military retirement alongside that with NASA. Thanks for your service!

Thank you for your service as well. You've accomplished some great things already, very impressive. Definitely speak with a reserve officer recruiter first and foremost. They will have the schedules down for Officer Training School and more info on available pilot slots. Then consider the "letter of the law" which is the USERRA program. That will have details on how that works. There is nothing wrong with exploring the possibilities first privately and then notifying your current civilian job if needed. Your background sounds like you'd bring a lot to the reserves. Also consider age as a factor for being selected for a pilot slot. I have seen non-prior selectees get OTS and some of the jobs you mentioned above.

Depending on your AFSC you can move around readily between reserves to AD.....24 years USAFR had many opportunities to go active as a Flight Engineer.

Be a doctor. Your next option is a NP. You are too smart to be just a nurse if u have a bachlors. Doctors with private practice make upwards of $350-$800,000 a year. Nurse practitioners are lucky to make 150 a year. The amount of knowledge a nurse needs to know compared to a nurse practitioner is the same Difference between a nurse practitioner and a doctor. Not sure if you've yet decided. The comments left are reasonable. However, also consider talking to a recruiter and be sure to ask about tuition assistance. It seems the military will fully pay your tuition costs. Anything can with either choice you make. For example, should you be forced to stop RN school for any reason i.e. pregnancy, sick parent etc. An added stress would be having to pay back school costs. But, by first joining the military multiple benefits benefits are accessible. Free training for your MOS, G.I. Bill, ongoing pay check, tuition for your spouse, or kids, tax free purchases and much more. Examine fully your interest, you may have many passions. The reserve is a good option but remember that it will only be part-time. You could also explore an active duty tour of 4 years but that will take you away from your family.

Great video. I’m 37 with no prior service. I have a full-time career and am seriously considering the Air Force Reserves. I have my Bachelors degree and want to join as an officer. I know you have to apply and complete OTS first, but in my scenario, would I be able to join the reserves part-time, but first go to OTS, or do you have to come in as enlisted and complete Basic Training beforehand? I have a stable family and income during my “training” would be crucial, so that’s another aspect I’m trying to figure out. Not too concerned about receiving military benefits since I have that covered on the civilian side. Mainly looking to do what I can to serve. Just wish I had done it sooner than later.

You do not have to come in first as enlisted. Speak with a Reserve recruiter about coming in as an officer as it does happen. They will explain the process. If you get selected, you'll go to OTS and then return to your home station. Eventually you most likely will go to your technical training. The only challenge I may see is your age so definitely bring that up to save you time. I've seen the cut off age as 35 and 39 so that's where I'm not completely clear as to which one is accurate.

Enlisted to officer on the reserve side is possible. If you find a reserve job in another location, you can commute to do your reserve duty or you can move there. If the job is part-time, you'll have to move yourself there. If it's full time, the Air Force may pay to move you there but that will depend. The Air Force would provide you guidance on how to make that possible.

This question/scenario may have already been asked and answered, but I did not see it. Please provide any insight as I am weighing my options. I am 27 years old, I have a wife, a newborn daughter and a house. I have always wanted to join the Air Force but never had the courage to join. Looking back now, I regret that decision. I have a full time career that I do not particularly enjoy, but it pays all bills and I am grateful for that. My question is: would the reserves be worth joining at this stage in life? Do any of you have experience with telling your employer you will be joining the reserves? My wife has given her full support for me joining but I am attempting to do all research before starting the process of joining. With my income today and the mortgage/car payments/etc, we literally cannot afford for me to join as active duty until we pay some more debt off. Thanks for the info in your video!

You're entitled up to $4,500 per year immediately. This is from the AFR website: www.afreserve.com/benefits I believe the Post 9-11 GI Bill is different as you'll need to have some active duty time to receive the full benefits.

With all of the things you want to do, part-time is a good option (Reserve or Guard). Keep in mind that once you're part-time, it's very tough to go active duty from there (very tough but not impossible). Take the ASVAB and that will let you know what jobs you will qualify for. Ask about the current needs of the Air Force as well. Good luck!

It will depend on what you want to pursue-- active duty or reserve. If you want to do part-time then you can enlist and eventually finish school and then your commission. If you want to go active duty- you enlist now and then pursue your commission through OTS when you finish your degree. It is difficult to go from reserve to active duty. I enlisted active duty and then finished my degree. I was not selected for OTS so I separated from active duty and went through ROTC while I worked on my master's degree. Don't worry about your age as there are many who join in their 30s. The bigger question that you'll want to decide is active duty or reserve. From there you'll have to decide enlisted or officer. Explore your options and then do what's best for you. Standing by to assist.

I’m finishing up my time in IRR and am stuck between a rock and a hard place trying to decide whether to stay in the reserves or separate. I’d cross train into loadmaster career field if I decide to stay but I just don’t know if I want to be in the military any longer from a commitment standpoint. My first 6 years were as a firefighter. Before I decide, can I ask your opinion? I’ve written the pros and cons and the cons outweigh the pros. For the things I want to accomplish (entertainment, entrepreneurship, fashion) the military isn’t needed in my opinion.

It's good that you've done the pros and cons specifically to your situation. You don't have to make a decision right now if you're unsure. You can revisit in 5 years if you wanted to but you'd have to go back to MEPS after one year of being out of the uniform. Remember that reserve/guard is part time so you can still do what you want the rest of your time. If you stay out and miss it down the road, you can join as long as you can complete 20 good years by age 60. One way to see it is not rejoin now and if you change your mind later, revisit. The only thing is you'd be surprised how many times I've heard people say, "If I would have just continued, I'd be retired by now." Trust your instinct.

The biggest PRO about being a reservist is not having to worry about PCS'g. You can move as many and however many times you want, to wherever. It's just that they will either pay for a ticket or mileage for you to get to your unit for drill. Also lodging. You'll also have to update the state for tax purposes in your MyPay so the taxes taken can reflect the same state you are a resident in. Not the state you report to for drill.

Drill weekends do not count, some/most TDYs do as long as they're long enough to qualify. If not, the waiting time frame is 6 years in the Air Force Reserve.

In regards to the VA loan, I recall you saying you had to be active duty for at least 6 months to qualify. How does that work as a reservist when you’re only doing your 1 weekend a month+2 weeks yearly? Since reserves aren’t considered active duty.

Hi Tiffani. If you want to serve part-time in the military, the reserve can be a good option. You'll get $4,500 per year for school and accomplish your master's degree. Depending on your job and branch, there can be travel options. The question is which branch of service is best for you? Speak with all of them and consider who will get you the job that you want. Some may offer a guaranteed job and some will require you to join "open general". Last, research which branch interests you the most.

While the Air Force looks the same for reserve and active duty, they are different to include how they are funded. If you want to serve full time, go active duty. If you want part-time, then reserve would be your better option. You could go active duty from the reserve side as an AGR which is Active Guard/Reserve. However, there are only about 2,800 slots worldwide and that includes all jobs. It's tough to get. You're eligible to use tuition assistance immediately but your leadership may require you to complete all of your upgrade training for your job first.

It depends. A reserve recruiter would let you know where your assignment will be and you'll know this well in advance once you're ready to commit. Once you're in, you can seek other assignments which may be closer or further away. There are many options.

Short answer is no. Active duty Air Force and Air Force Reserve are two different components. You are either under the active side or the reserve side. If your goal is to be active, speak with an active duty recruiter. It is VERY difficult to go from reserve to active. Yes it can happen but it will be complicated and as always, it will depend on the needs of the Air Force.

Question: I'm 29 and for sure doing either the reserves or full time. My fiance however owns a business and depending on her success is why I'm leaning on reserves. He business makes enough money that it's nothing to scoff at. However hypothetically if it were to fail I'd want to be full time active duty. I will have my degree in 3 semesters in Comp.Sci. The opportunity may be there but like we both said, it will depend on the needs of the Air Force. Nothing is guaranteed. We'll have to see when you (if) you cross that bridge. It also depends on the job the Air Force is looking for on active duty.

If you join you'll have to complete Basic Training plus technical training. It could take you out for about 4 to 8 months depending on the length of your technical training. Then you'll have your weekend duty and two weeks per year. You'll have access to the Post 9-11 GI Bill but it will be a certain percentage. As you accrue more active duty time, the higher the percentage. You will have tuition assistance every year for $4,500 (per year) until you complete a master's degree.

Most career fields deploy at some point or another. There are many support jobs but they will still deploy. Joining the military can put us in harms way but that is what we sign up for. During your two week (annual tour) you'll be doing your primary job.

Thank you for the feedback. I recommend you speak with a recruiter as your VA rating may or may not allow you to re-enter. It's definitely worth looking into. If it works out, you'll have a great amount of points towards a future retirement. If it doesn't, at least you tried and maybe you could do it through civil service for the Air Force.

To my knowledge and from what I've seen, the Air Force doesn't have this job for military personnel. I've seen tech folks join the Communications Squadron and they learn their skills on the side. Then some of them come back as civil service (civilians) or contractors to serve as web developers.

As long as there is a need for you to work extra time and there are funds, it can happen. The best thing to do is network and have a solid reputation so when there are opportunities, you'll be selected for extra time.

Just remember, you can be activated at any time. I was in the reserves for 8 years. Both full time and straight reservist. Remember if you serve for 20 years you will get a retirement but not starting until your 60. And your retirement will be a fraction of active duty retirement. A reservist will be eligible for Tricare when they reach 60. They slightly changed the retirement rules, if you serve in a combat zone you can retire before 60 by the amount of time spent in a combat zone.
