I actually think in some applications the air fryer is preferable (and not in just a looking for a healthy alternative way) but for example in the crunch wrap episode when he did tempura shrimp I think that the air fryer was actually the smarter tool to use. Shrimp, especially tempura shrimp, can get really greasy easily, and with fried shrimp you’re often going for light and crispy. Chicken is so bland that without a little fat it really can be flavorless

The problem with air fryers is that they don't force moisture out of the item like a deep fryer does. You need to lightly spray anything you put in with oil, or add a little oil to the recipe to get similar results. Next time you make your breading, throw a tablespoon or two of oil or lard into the breading and mix it in well. You'll get MUCH better results and still be using only a small fraction of the oil that deep frying uses.

One thing that will help with the air fryer, spray the pieces with Canola Oil or Olive Oil before placing them in the air fryer. They will get crispier and will even taste better. You have to be more careful with the time with the Olive oil since it can burn if you get it too hot for too long. I always spray things like fries and onion rings. Tater Tots don't need to be sprayed with oil. They are already coated in oil to help them crisp in regular ovens.
