Check out Tal with Charles Mingus and Red Norvo, I heard him live once and realized he was no regular academically trained jazz guitarist before I had the opportunity to hear him live. I've heard from one of his ex-students that Tal probably was experiencing hand problems which directly affected him as he grew older. Tal was a greatly gifted guitarist and real nice guy.

+Cluke84 If you mean Tal's left (and not from our point of view), it is Herb Ellis. Anyway, I agree Mr. Byrd is specially brilliant here, although imho Farlow is fairly "superior" than the others, with my full respect and admiration for them all.

Herb is the best soloist of the three, his choice of notes is much akin to BB Kings Tal is by far the most technical of the 3, and it shows in his knowledge of rhythm Charlie has the most jive to his playing, and in my opinion, stole the show with his solo here

@philh37 - and Danny Gatton had the smallest hands I've ever seen on a guitar player......they were both monsters on the guitar! It's the size of the heart, not the hands, that counts.

As much as I like Herb Ellis and even Tal Farow, I'm affraid Charlie Byrd wiped the floor with those two guys. Maybe it's just the tone of Byrds classical guitar. My dad was constantly listening to Stan Getz and Sergio Mendes when I was a little kid.
