I had the profound pleasure of gigging with Herb Ellis one evening in 1994. It is one of the best memories in my life. All night long I kept playing double-time stuff all over the place, and Herb played tastefully, melodically. At the end of the night, he called "I want to be Happy" at light speed, and simply annihilated me. A total gentleman. Very encouraging and musical.

Lol Yeh Herb could burn which as you said is surprising as he shows so much taste and restrain. He made a couple albums with Joe Pass and some numbers hot!!

At this age I would be happy to be alive and able to pee - that these guys can still do this is amazing

Yes it is amazing. I have just recovered from a mini-stroke. I spent months practicing, but I still can't quite get my chops back. But one never gives up. Mind you I can always manage to get to the bathroom in time! I've met and spoken to all three of these guitarists, and even played a couple of numbers with Charlie Byrd in the 80s. Barney too, was great company, for about thirty minutes when he appeared with Herb Ellis and Marion Montgomery. Class evening of Jazz. Whenever I got to see these guys play, whoever they were, I made a point of seeking them out and talking to them. They are wise and are unselfish with their advice. That's always been my experience at least. I am in my 80th year by the way...

The most beautiful and extrordinary version of the lovely old standard "Exactly Like You" featured Herb Ellis on the guitar. Back in 1969 when I was 10 yrs. old and discovering a lot of Rock, my Dad and I started what we called "Album Listening Night". We would each bring in an album and as we played them LOUDLY on our old Magnavox counsole stereo (much to my Mom's distress), explain to each other why we thought they were great. On this occasion, I brought in Iron Butterflys "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida". My Dad brought in the Oscar Peterson Trio album "Hello, Herbie!" It was recorded the first time Oscar and Herb had seen each other since Herb left the trio and was replaced with drums. I was transported to another realm. I have never heard more beautiful guitar passages by any other guitarist....even by Herb himself....than his performance on "Exactly Like You". True to the rest of the world or not, that performance AWOKE me to the beauty a guitar can hold in the hands of a TRUE jazz guitarist. My Iron Butterfly album is long gone. Sadly my Dad is too.....nearly 10 years now. But he left me all of his vinyl album Jazz collection. Come June 6, the anniversary of his passing, I will pull out "Hello, Herbie", put it on the turntable as I always do, and for just a short while my Dad, my mom, Herb, Oscar, Ray Brown, and Bobby Durham will all young, healthy, and back together once more. Herb Ellis....thank you for your elegant and genteel artistry. You will never be forgotten.

In Brazil we have something like this (but adapted to a diferent rhythm, in case, the "samba"). We call it "chorinho". Both of them are incredible beautiful. Just like a medicine to the ears and minds. Saluds from Brazil. Ray Charles forever!

Ciao.
