I've visited that siren on the old Firestone building in South Gate in December. The engine is gone (removed sometime in the 80's) but the empty engine compartment, blower, and horns are still there. There's a place directly across the street that sells used Japanese engines if anyone wants to make it sound again.

I think the ones that are still on place can be started easily, those engines were built to stay on rooftops unattended for years and start quickly on request, the engine casings may be weather proof

It's too bad that we didn't get to see their reactions after they shut it off. Those horns are loud enough to actually cause nausea if they were to run it very long in that small of an area. Cool!

@Siren1000T At full power it could be hurd at this distance in this video they did not have the origanal victory siren horns on as they where 3ft long in a side by side configuration and as you rightly point out the noise to be heard at this distance was loud at full power put out over 130+ db of noise which is easily enough to tranmit sound upto 25 miles funnly enough they where never used other then for testing ...

138 dB at 30 METERS (instead of the usual 1, every doubling (5 here) in distance is a quartering of sound, so dB at 1 meter should have been about 20XdB@30) meter from the horn. Oh yeah, this thing could be heard from 25 miles. And yes it could, and did deafen people.

@budw84 Read R. Murray Schafer's book "The New Soundscape". He talks about it in there, but I don't think it is the Chrysler. The loudspeaker that could do that only achieved it by producing ultra-sonic frequencies, way beyond human hearing, at very high amplitudes. Apart from digging through Schafer's research and some libraries you won't be able to find much info on it.

Just saying -- because someone had to -- I don't think it was too bright to run that engine and operate the siren in an enclosed space.

@MiksuK17 жыл бұрын
From what I've understood, it's not really wise to run it with people that close on the front of the horns and in a closed space! :o The thing can create sound pressure of 138db at 100 feet distance. That can be really dangerous for your hearing. Had they really rev it up they'd be in serious trouble.
@crazywarriorman16 жыл бұрын
Not exactly. There are hundreds left but they dont work or there rusting away on buildings or junk yards
