The problem here in London (England) is not the efficiency of the heat pump (air to air, ground or water) but the inefficiency of the buildings to retain the heat. The values we currently use to determine the accepted efficiency of even our new builds, is simply not great enough to make homes designed for gas/electricity wet systems, suiltable for heat pumps. I'm a builder, plumber with gas experience and can say with very few exceptions, the way forward is to improve the insulation (thermal bridging) between the outside and the inside of the property and the existing gas/elec powered systems can be turned down by 50% and everyone (green, blue & red) will be much happier. Encouraging people to retro fit heat pumps to their homes without tackling the underlying problem of inefficiency is like offering me a cup of hot tea to warm up when I'm sat outside, mid winter in a T-shirt and shorts!!.......better to give me a pair of good strides, woolly hat and thick coat first.

The points you make are right, however those points seem to be over looked or ignored by the powers that be. And with government money in the wind, there will be the inevitable miss selling, and when those companies have long gone, the home owner will be stuck with an inefficient expensive system which they will be scared to switch on due to the running costs.

The problem, the technology of house building in England.Solid outside wall, lighten wall inside, and the insulation between them not tight.

@@kecsubacsi That and we don't exactly build houses to passivhaus standards You really ought to insulate the house as much as economically possible before going for a heat pump too. Also as it stands, the other biggy is purely that the COP despite being pretty good, is still more expensive than gas heating. That definitely puts me off even with current gas prices. It might be different in time. As it stands, as of today between 25-50% of our electricity is also produced by gas. That's slowly changing ofc but still I reckon the government will need huge incentives here and also perhaps pump a load of money into R&D to really increase the COP on heat pumps

Yes, you are correct. The UK has a lot of old buildings (which is somehow perceived to be a good thing), however, actual suitability for human habitation and the energy efficiency of these buildings are virtually non-existent. However, if it was a choice between not being able to refit the home to be able to retain the heat better and using gas anyway, you're still far better off with ground (or air) source heat pumps (I personally lean towards ground source) to heat the same space because it would be far cheaper. The thing about insulation however is also a complex one. We had the housing come several times to improve insulation, but the differences were marginal at best seeing how they only installed what seemed like more insulation foam in the attic... and while I'm not saying its completely ineffective, these are for the most part half baked measures and we need to do better.

Very well explained and bloopers at the end. made us chuckle. I will watch more of your videos as we intend to get one but looking at the cost too. Cheers!

What’s the return on your investment between the two systems looks pretty long on a ground source ?.when you consider the cost inside the house for under floor heating fan coils or radiators is the Same for both systems. Both systems require compressors and and evaporators it’s when you get to the condenser you have a massive delta tee between the air source condenser and the vertical or horizontal loops. Surely it’s more effective to increase the thermal efficiency of the house which has a direct impact on comfort levels and reduces heating demand making air source a better option for the average house holder.

The biggy with ASHP even if it was cheap, is that the COP is rarely five. It has to be at least 5 to counteract the fact that gas is typically five times cheaper The COP for an ASHP is typically around 2.5 to 3 as indicated by this video. I'm sure GSHP will be easier to add to existing homes in due course too but you still would struggle with terraced houses . A COP of 4 for GSHP still isn't as cheap as gas heating however. It'd be perfect if either managed to get a COP of 5+ (Well, a bit more than that to recoup the initial cost) With current technology, this is greener sure but still more expensive than gas.

ASHP do NOT work in winter to a level that would be acceptable. ie 74f They would struggle to get to 50F. In addition they are 6times more expensive than replacing your old boiler with an efficient gas boiler. You would do better to spend money on Solar panels with a output to your bottom immersion heater.

Air source work really well with under floor heating or in combination with Fan coils such as the Daikin HP ones and you have to design at 35C flow temps @-3 C in the UK. Don’t try and heat your DHW off the same system either and keep them running all the time turn the down on a room by room basis. Trying to compare against a Gas boiler at 80C flow temps with conventional radiators is not going to work my advise would be always go down the gas route if available. If not available air source heat pumps can work but forget trying to replace a gas boiler with a HP and conventional radiators it’s a rip out and start again.

So GSHPs are only really for new builds and ASHPs are noisy and will likely annoy your neighbours? This video has pretty much put me off the idea altogether.

If u r building a new house consider the video if no just get a new boiler and central heating system . Talk to a qualified heating installer and be told the real truth

I have heated my home in Huntington NY (USA) for 42 years with a heat pump made by Lennox. I have found the heat pump to be an outstanding performer and dirt cheap to run. My costs to heat and cool my home are a small fraction of my next door neighbors costs, who has the virtual identical home. The climate in New York State is much more extreme than the UK with hotter summers and colder winters yet the heat pump handles everything with ease at a fraction of the cost of Gas or Oil. My neighbor has to wear a sweater in their house in the winter because they have the thermostat set at 65 degrees Fahrenheit and even with this they pay four times as much as I do to heat my home with the thermostat set at 74 degrees Fahrenheit.

@@9546aw Everything you say is spot on.......when the house is well insulated. Unfortunately here in the UK (because of a fairly moderate year round climate and successive governments kicking the can down the proverbial road), adequate roof insulation is not even a 100% given let alone walls, windows and floors. Most property (80+%) is built of brick, concrete with solid or unfilled cavity walls and no end of thermal bridging. So although you would be hard pushed to find a property without double glazed windows and loft insulation for example, most of our property stock is woefully inadequate for the retro fit of heat pumps and can only be kept comfortable in winter by inefficient means ie: gas or electric fuelled, wet systems with a panel (or more) in each room, running at a flow temp between of 70-80°c.....💷💰....ouch! There are exceptions to every rule of course and I've worked on well designed property which you can warm with a candle in the deepest of winters but as I say, they are an exception. 🤷🏾‍♂️

No they are not excellent way to heat up your home. Which one is the right one for you? Simple they are probably not even going to provide you with heat let alone save you money, so if you just wanna waste money and get something that will eat more of your money then great go for it but check with your neighbours, if that’s a problem get a grill out and burn your money the heat that will be created in your garden by burning your money directly will have the same heat effect on your house as the heat pump!

Our company It is a scientific and technological enterprise specializing in the R & D, production, sales and service of solar energy, air source heat pump hot water, heating and refrigeration engineering systems. It is the development and cooperation unit of Zhejiang Energy Research Institute - new energy source. The company won the title of Hangzhou high-tech enterprise in 2010 and ultra-low in 2011 The warm air source heat pump unit project won the national science and technology small and medium-sized enterprise innovation fund project award, and won the new industrial product award of Zhejiang Province. Also we want to find some partners or agents,If you are interested, we can communicate this matter。 Relying on the high-tech of Zhejiang University and the first air source heat pump with normal heating of minus 25 ° in China, the company is the only "dynamic and static combination defrosting" patent technology in China (patent number: zl201310163521.4, inventor: Liu Yinlong), combined with the advanced modern production equipment of China and Germany. It has a number of energy-saving patent technologies - split pressure solar collector module, and its products are exported to the United States, Germany and Switzerland In Dian, Korea and other regions, the solar collector module has passed FSEC certification in the United States and TUV certification in Germany. At present, it is the most efficient, energy-saving, low-carbon, emission reduction, environmental protection and safe central hot water equipment. My e-mail: fexur@foxmail.com
