The useful lifespan of a runway typically is 15 to 20 years. Using that standard, many runways around the country are on their last legs. He handled it well but if they use a NYC pothole repair crew, it's doomed.

@@haroldwilkes6608 The taxiway repair doomed all schedules for at least a month. Two full weeks to fill out the proper gov't paperwork, then a week waiting for approval, then a week for the crew to fix it, then a week to get it tested and certified. Yeesh.

And there is operation command, which is responsible in total, including the airspace Along with your condescending and vacuous words.
@thecheeta
@thecheeta 9 жыл бұрын
Nithin Devoor Operation command? Um...no. More specifically, there is no such thing as "operation command" in the United States airspace system. ***** is correct. This particular controller, though he is stationed in an air traffic control tower, is the ground controller. There are other controllers, referred to as "tower" (as opposed to "ground") that control the immediate airspace around the airport, and more specifically control the aircraft arriving on and departing from the runways. Ground and Tower collaborate with each other to have some semblance of efficiency, although at places like JFK, there's just so much traffic that "efficient" is a pretty relative term. drmayeda1's comment was not remotely condescending or vacuous. They were merely an attempt to educate you as to the difference between "tower" and "ground." Nothing to get butthurt over.
@edwin4362

They are audible from his location. These aren't recorded from the airport or anything, more like residential that's next to the airport. So the audio here is much less clear than what he is hearing.

I had no idea modern airports were so congested?! -surely it would only take one person to make a mistake here and it could have catastrophic consequences?
@nickc.8814
@nickc.8814 9 жыл бұрын
D3cyTH3r not catastrophic unless it's on a runway at high speed. Yes, there can be screw-ups which result in planes swapping paint, but it won't usually result in injury unless there's been a major mistake. Keep in mind all of these airplanes are on the ground, spread over a large area of airport: look at a map of JFK and you'll see what I mean.
@drmayeda1930
@drmayeda1930 7 жыл бұрын
as long as they don't touch wings. That could be a bigger problem than scrapped paint. I'm looking for the intruder that hopped the fence and drove a trunk into the nosegear of an occupied jet.
@vbscript2
@vbscript2 6 жыл бұрын
Touching wings happens more than you might think. It's a bad day for the airplanes (and for whoever was at fault,) but it doesn't harm the passengers, aside from causing them some serious delays due to needing a new airplane. And ramming a truck into the nose gear of a passenger jet isn't going to harm anyone except for the poor guy in the truck. He will have a bad day. The airplane will need to go to maintenance, but it's not going to harm the people on board. The nose gear is literally designed to be pushed with a truck. That's how the airplanes are positioned on the ground before they start the engines. The landing gear on an airliner is very strong.

@ryanfan2008

Michael Reid Depends on the airport of course, but sometimes if a runway is not the advertised runway or maybe even closed the ground controller could be in control of it.

A Ground controller over here at usually has control over an Unused or even an active Arrival runway . He just have to Consult with the Tower Controller or the Supervisor. Usually ground can give clearance for a crossing on an arrival runway with an aircraft on 2 - 4 mile final.

Wait.. a plane can't go over a broken pavement?
@kchigley5309
@kchigley5309 7 жыл бұрын
Well, they don't really state the condition of the pavement, but a takeoff ready Boeing 747 weighs in at about 900,000 pounds (~400 metric tons). The pavement could have broken due to something like rain washing out the sub-base underneath. In that case, there would be a hole underneath and a plane could get stuck/damaged.
