Air War in Ukraine - How Much Do We Know About It (So Far)? (DCS World)

Or at least, what do we think we know? As various pieces of information emerge from the War in Ukraine, it might be a bit hard to put together a picture of what the air portion of the conflict looks like. We've done our best.
Disclaimer: Very few details about the actual air combat is available at this moment and scenes depicted in this video are mostly guesswork. Limited assets available in DCS World also mean that some approximation about weapon types, aircraft skins etc. is needed.

Fun fact (maybe): Stepan Choban, or Ștefan Ciobanu as he preferred, was a Romanian ethnic from Southern Bessarabia (today in the Odessa region of Ukraine). He's last words to his family were "Nu mor caii când vor câinii" (The horses don't die when the dogs want it), a Romanian proverb. He participated together with Oksanchenko at BIAS 2016, you can find some clips here on youtube.

I do not mean any disrespect to anyone fighting in this war, or to the families of those warriors, or to anyone. But I just have to say this, and if any of you who are commenting here have ever played Ace Combat before discovering DCS, I bet you've thought of this too. _The whole Ghost Of Kyiv tale sounds EXACTLY like a storyline out of Ace Combat. I mean, it is dead on AC 5 The Unsung War!_ I'm talking about the Ghosts Of Razgriz, who were this hodgepodge squadron thrown together out of desperation. The player plays as Blaze, a nugget who goes on to become flight lead, and his squadron becomes hailed as the Razgriz. Does anyone know the origin of this Ghost Of kyiv story? It had to come from someone, somewhere. This just shows me that we have to try like _triple_ hard to check out all data and narrative we hear, because things are being tossed about with wild abandon, especially by the mainstream media, who are of course the major finger pointers of all time. At first when I saw this video, I was unsure how I felt about it. Is it just someone trying to make DCS content for more hits on their channel? Or is it sincere? Well, after watching the whole thing, I have to say I don't see any major fictionalization going on here. Actually, this video sticks to such facts as are known far more precisely than do _any_ of the mainstream corporate media sock puppets. So at the beginning of this I was pretty suspicious. By the end I was pretty damn impressed. What this does is, it takes the facts, as many facts as you could find anyway, and it makes clinical facts, data, and statistics into a visceral experience that can be quite effective for showing people that , "...sources say that a Russian Antonov Transport carrying soldiers and weapons was shot down by a Ukrainian Mig 29..." , is just another piece of data until they see a DCS 'demonstration' of how that engagement actually looked. That is valuable, man, _really_ valuable. As long as your videos remain fact based and without any sensationalism, I have come to believe that you guys are doing something valuable, and it's unique. As far as I know, no one has reported international war news using a military aviation simulator. It shows how good DCS really is, but even more, it shows how useful a tool DCS can be. Hopefully no one else will circulate DCS videos as real footage. Yes, the graphics are good enough to fool pretty much anyone but IRL fighter pilots and those who fly in DCS, but I hope we have seen the end of that shit, because just as this video ↑↑↑ reflects well on the DCS community, people who use it to fake 'evidence' make the DCS community look depraved. Good video here. I hope you guys keep doing these exactly as you did here.

Thank you very much for this very elaborate comment! I've never played Ace Combat but as you suggest, the whole story very likely evolved from there. As for the videos I make, I always try to be rational. I use this Serbian aviation portal as a balance source. As you might know, Serbia is one of only two openly pro-Russian countries in Europe and while the guys on the portal seem to be objective and not root for Russia openly, they definitely don't root for Ukraine. If they write something that's not favorable for Russia, I take it as a pretty good confirmation. Thanks again and keep watching!

Regarding the Ghost of Kyiv, have you seen the short DCS film titled "the Ghost"? I feel like that was the inspiration for the story, whoever first came up with the Ghost of Kyiv. Though I do believe that the GoK represents more than that and is not entirely fictional.

This war has been the closest to the Ethiopian Somalian war of the 70s. With both sides limited on air operations. But there is talk of retired US f-16v or f-18c being sold to Ukraine to replace losses.

Thanks for producing a video on the air war in Ukraine with little detailed information coming out of the theatre especially from the pilots perspective, which is usually your format in detailing air combats. In your next video of the war in Ukraine, I hope you could do one on the Low flying Russian helicopter that was shot head on by a Manpad a couple of days ago. Keep up the good work man.

Thank you for your comment! There will be more scenes reenacted in the future as they appear. In fact, just before the release of the video, lots of new info about Russian losses started to appear. It takes several days to produce a video such as this one so I can't be as up-to-date as the news portals but I can offer a summary and another perspective.

One thing I will say about the air war in Ukraine is that neither side seems to be too worried about the others air power. The Byaktar drones are no threat the 40 mile long parked for days Russian convoy on highway prove this. I have seen tons of UAF positions that for some reason love to use fixed locations as fortification. Round abouts! Tanks arty apc and troops all standing or parked in the open inside a giant circle. No fear of Russian CAS. To Top that off Ru MOD stated they had neutralized the air field operating UAF aircraft just today? NO idea how that gets over looked? Probably the sams.

The thing about the "Ghost" is that all the experts are saying that it's impossible for a 29 to shoot down all those targets in a single fight. Not enough Missiles carried and not enough fuel..blah blah blah!! But what I heard from my buddie in Russia was that it was over a 30 hour period and he had flown multiple sorties and was rearmed and refueled multiple times. By the time he was done he had to be dragged out of the cockpit from exhaustion. What ever the case is I expect that the level of training by the Russians is not as high as people thought due to the lack of money in their budget. If you look at their Air Craft Carrier it was sent home because it was not effective and had multiple mishaps. The Entire air wing was moved from the ship and stationed on land. The Georgian conflict saw mostly friendly fire incidents. I can not imagine Putin taking this lightly thinking he should send in the D team rather than A or B because the Ukrainians would be a push over. Something just doesn't seem right with the Russian Military. The whole Su-57 Felon not living up to it's potential? This would have been the perfect time to showcase everything that is hot! I mean when America fought Iraq we didn't hold back on anything. My personal feeling is that the Russians do not have their shit together at all.

@@showtime112 kzbin.info/www/bejne/aZXXhHmMraajaMU Euronews in portuguez. I'm franco-roumanian. France and Roumania are playing cat and mouse with the Russians over ukrainien air space. I suppose Euronews refer to the plane you keep trace about which Roumainians refueled and let him fly back unarmed in Ukraine... That's a dangerous and ambiguos game to play as any beligerant aircraft entering Roumania should be considered POW and grounded. Roumainian PM is a 5 stars NATO retired General... I Wonder why 🤔 Macron said ,,french fighters are escorting ukrainien aircrafts'' a statment which didn't made much sens. If that meant french fighters are entering ukrainien air space, it would have meant War with Russia... ? In fact, France rented ukrainien Antonovs to Vector french soldiers and equipment from Istres in France to Romania. That's why France pretends escorting ukrainien aircrafts. France is interested in having those ukrainien Antonovs because France must bring back men and equipment from Mali during the next weeks. I will gladly send you any further information concerning air activity concerning France and Roumania as I really apreciate your KZbin Channel. You're doing Great.

Romania* thank you. As for Ukrainian aircraft in Romania, there's currently none. On 24 February, one Su-27 entered Romanian airspace, was intercepted by two Romanian F-16s and escorted to land at the 95th Air Base in Bacau. The aircraft needed some repairs and after those were completed with a team of mechanics from Ukraine, the aircraft was returned unarmed (as is protocol, with its missiles possibly returning on land) on 1 March. That's it, that's the only Ukrainian jet that was in Romania.

Unless Russia is holding back their major part of their fighter and air assets to cover Northern Europe, the Maoist-Mongolian boarder area and North Korea/Japan their air operations look pretty anemic in the Ukraine. It's like they can't carry out a large scale air/ground combined arms operation. The ground war is only working up to 100 kilometers from their main rail hubs in Belarus and Russia, they don't have enough trucks to supply their tanks with fuel, or ammo for their artillery. What they do have are prime targets #1 for the Ukrainian military, soft targets and you take them out, the tanks don't roll. I read this morning that 8 Russian aircraft were lost yesterday, mostly helos, or SU25's. I been basing my information on KZbin and Drudge Report, the Canadian and US television news is nothing more than propaganda and made up stories, not trust worthy at all.

If you look at recent RuAF operations they are not very sterling and lack coordination, IFF and in some cases poor airmanship. In Georgia the Russian army actually shot down more of their own aircraft than the Georgians. It’s clear the pre war analysis of the Russian armed force being a first class force were way of the mark. This is basically a homeland defense force fill with draftees with a thin veneer of career professional forces

@@Dog.soldier1950 I fully agree with your assessment, the Russians can only conduct limited military operations outside of their boarders. They are heavily dependent on their internal rail system, when you get 70-90 kilometers outside of the rail hubs their lack of truck transports and other logistical abilities severely limits any kind of large power projection. Syria was a small scale operation and they just barely was able to conduct operations there, Georgia almost turned into a cluster fuck on them.

There's one more factor that often plays a huge role, especially in such 'authoritative' regimes. That kind of a leader thinks he knows everything better than anyone and doesn't like to be told he is wrong. Maybe this whole operation was 'planned' by the political leadership without consulting much the military leadership. And by planning, I mean setting the objectives and (unrealistic) timetables to meet them. Generals could have just been told what they were expected to do, not at the last moment but long after it.

It really could go either way, Russia really hasn't had much experience with large scale military operations outside of their country since the mid 80's and Afghanistan and that was a complete catastrophe. Afghanistan was their biggest operation since the 1956 Hungarian uprising and WWII. The only reason they weren't defeated by the Nazi's was the US/UK lend lease, the US shipped all those two and a half ton trucks to Russia and in Hungry, they were already there.

The only question I ask myself is this? Ukraine no longer exists in fact. it is been partitioned. What happens to Kieve? Russia could pound it to the ground if it wanted to do so. But that is politically unpalatable. So my guess is the Special forces and Chechens will go in as 8 men hit teams in mass and clean the place of Nazis. I have no doubt they will succeed at great loss to Russian lives. Now that leaves Nazi-controlled Western Ukraine Lvov? The population hate Russians. It can not be pacified. Two options: level the whole place to the ground or make that a border? 64 dollar question? To me by successful precedent is Grozny 1(a failure) and Grozny 2 (a success) like the Islamist terrorist, they hate and will never love Russians as the Nazis in Lviv do. So pound it to the ground like Grozny 1 and 2. No big loss...Only natural-born nazis fascists. Russian aviation will be heavily involved. If the Americans are forced to try a no fly zone. Then all bets are off. Good chance of nuclear weapons being used in an escalation. But exciting, in a perverse way to see aerial battles of these magnitudes. Cheers,
