Operation Allied Force was a NATO campaign against Federal Republic of Yugoslavia. Essentially, those were the remaining two republics of a former federation, Serbia and Montenegro led by Slobodan Milošević.
On 24 March 1999, two large strike groups header for Serbian airspace. One of them focused on the north of the country and its strikers were stealth F-117s. Their air cover consisted of F-15s led by Captain Mike 'Dozer' Shower. Upon arriving on their CAP station, Dozer's flight would meet resistance in the form of Serbian MiG-29s. Two pilots, Nebojša Nikolić and Ljubiša Kulačin took off from Batajnica airbase near Belgrade and confronted the NATO fighters. While it is well known that Serbian aircraft were facing many challenges with unreliability, in this video you will see that NATO had its own share of problems, not only of technical nature but also lack of experience and poor planning.
This DCS Wold reenactment is a follow-up of a video made quite a while ago in which we focused on the southern group. Now, you will be able to see what was happening in the north.

Hey Showtime 112, thanks for another great reenactment of the air war over Yugoslavia. I really enjoyed watching your videos. I’m just wondering if you could produce a video on the shooting down of Lt. Col Goldfein in his F-16, and Lt. Col Zelko in his F-117 The former later became the Air Force Chief of Staff, and the latter befriended his nemesis who shot down his stealth aircraft. Would be a great story to tell on how they were targetted by the Serbs and how they evaded capture behind enemy lines.

serbs might’ve had a chance if yugoslavia chose the proposed Mirage M2000 over the mig-29 but the mirages were too expensive and yugoslavs were investing in the “Novi Avion” (proposed yugoslav-made fighter jet which never got into production because of the yugoslav wars) and there was also a time where yugoslavia was supposed to buy mirage III aircraft but because of france’s stance on the algerian war, mig-21 were bought and yugoslavia started buying soviet military equipment since
@showtime112
@showtime112 6 ай бұрын
Mirage 2000 might have made some difference but probably not significant as they also only had semi-active RH missiles and would have also been difficult to maintain under the sanctions (likely even more). I have to say I didn't know that Mirage III was considered for purchase at that time. The French are usually not too fussy about politics when they sell their weapon systems :)

As usual, great video with both high cinematic & historical quality. Plus, this one in particular was extremely enlightening regarding issues involving equipment glitch/failure. I am constantly astounded at the manner in which an increasingly annoying cascade of seemingly minor problems can result in uncleared missions and sometimes death -- "my radar is unresponsive," and "damn radio doesn't work!" & "...f*@q+#*g IFF won't work now? What next?”...... Far too many times this leads to _"Remember that last Mig? Yeah? You Do? So do I, he's the one I couldn't ID because my IFF took a crap, and you couldn't tell me you ID'd him as hostile BECAUSE YOUR RADIO TOOK ANOTHER CRAP AAARRGGH!!...so he bombed our airport & we couldn't land, so we went bingo, couldn't make it to the tanker, AND there was no blue airport close enough for us to even deadstick it in, so we crashed! Next time our maintainers ask us to do something, we damn well better DO THAT SHIT!!"_ K, I got carried away lol, but still, that is essentially the ugly truth behind any military effort, whether defensive or offensive, in which the cascading effect of multiple glitches and equipment failures can result in catastrophic failure of an entire campaign. Sobering. But great content man. You're one of the few channels on DCS that often explores such matters through the use of carefully crafted DCS simulations.

How did the IFF get a false id?
@showtime112
@showtime112 2 жыл бұрын
IFF generally can give a positive ID or unknown. F-15s also had a 'non-cooperative target recognition system'. Exact details on how it works are classified but it can recognize a specific type of an aircraft. Or it gives no ID when it can't. There was a false ID by the AWACS when the second MiG-29 was declared friendly after the close encounter with the F-15s. I'm not sure exactly why that happened. Perhaps the operator was inexperienced, or it was getting a signal from another contact and it was confused with the MiG.
