TLOK didn't retcon the idea of the sky bisons being the first airbenders. Badgermols, dragons and sky bisons already posessed that ability and was not given. Their part in this was that they teached the humans how to bend it, just like wan with that dragon. Lion Turtles gave the ability to humans to bend it, so there's a difference.

In regards to the Original Benders, and the Lion Turtles 'ret con', the way a lot of us view it is this. The Lion Turtles knew Energy Bending, which allowed them to give people the 'Power of the Element'. However, this is not the same as 'bending'. For example Avatar Wan, was given the Power of the Element: Fire from the Lion Turtle, but he learned how to properly 'bend' the element from the dragons while living in the spirit wilds. Even the hunters that had come out to fight him from the Lion Turtle City, commented that 'he wields the power of fire differently to how they do, as an extension of himself'. I believe the ability to bend, is akin to using the element as an extension of one's self. So the Lion Turtles could create people with the ability to wield the element, but to master properly bending an element, would be learned from the Original Benders (dragons, badger moles, sky bison, & the moon).

To sum it up, having the Element does not = being a genuine bender. Just look at the random Earth Kingdom citizens who got Air after harmonic convergence - they can move air, but they are hardly airbenders, uncontrolled and undisciplined. The Lion Turtles gave people fists; the OG benders (the badger moles, dragons, bison, and moon) showed people how to box.

To further indicate that bending is more than just simply having the power, in episode 1 of ATLA, Katara asserts that she's not a waterbender "yet", just as Aang says he's not a firebender yet during the Sun Warrior episode. Even though the show uses the term "bender" to often refer to those with the power, it's evidently more of a convenience in the terminology, as it's easier to understand and say in a sentence.

Lion turtles gave the energy, but as shown in the avatar Wan episodes. When they were given fire, all they knew what to do with it was just throw it around wildly. When Wan was in the wilds, the dragon showed him how to make it a part of himself and to control it. When he came across those other guys again they even said "the way he controlled fire was like they never seen before" So they more off combined the two sides of it. Which also makes sense how the lion turtle showed Aang how to block the bending energy.

While it was the dragon turtles that gave Avatar Wan the ability to bend, it was animals that taught him how to do it properly. A number of humans could fire bend, but it was treated as a basic point-and-shoot ability until he learned how to properly bend from the dragons. We can assume that off-screen he learned how to properly air bend from the air bison and earth bend from the badger moles.

that's why they showed wan learning the dancing dragon fighting techniques. when they say they learnt form from the badger mole, bison , ocean and moon spirit and dragon, they learnt form and techniques because before they used the power like blasts , but then wan always beat them because he used fire as an extension of himself which is something the humans weren't taught when they were given fire

So using Toph as an example and also when Aang and Zuko trained with the Sun Warriors, the animals/moon taught people techniques to bend which is why Toph was the only one who could sense vibrations but she already knew to earth bend. Same with the dragons, the dragon dance was a technique but you have to already have firebending. The moon same thing a technique to push and pull the waters. If you remember from Wan’s story there were no animals really, just Human towns and Spirits so chances are the animals were already out there bending and doing their thing. Hope that clarifies!

(in a film, television series, or other fictional work) a piece of new information that imposes a different interpretation on previously described events, typically used to facilitate a dramatic plot shift or account for an inconsistency. Literally the definition of a retcon. But with korra, they imposed the inconsistency with their retcon, not fixed one.

The IDEA that dragons, badgermoles, moon, and sky bison, were the original benders and taught humans how to better wield the elements, is established in atla. In korra they change that IDEA to it was actually lion turtles and the animals just showed them to dance better with it. Literally a retcon. You can enjoy it, as lame as it is, you are allowed. Retcons arent inherently bad, but this one is. And ppl like the show, assume retcons are bad, they hear this show retcons, means they did a bad, but you like the show, so how can it do a bad?!?!?! @@michaelgarrett139 being gifted fire and being taught to harness it are simply different. If thats a retcon it is on the loosest of definitions. Another thought about the origin of bending - as a history enthusiast, I learned that a lot of the times the stories and myths that are passed through generations may reflect parts of the truth but not all of it. More than anything else these stories reflect the people who told them, rather than plain historical documentation. There are about 10,000 years between the times of Wan and Aang, plenty of time for the Lion Turtles' role in the whole ordeal to be forgotten (like, what do WE know of humanity 10,000 years ago?)

20:30 The best explanation I have heard is the following. Yes, the Lion turtles unlocked their ability to bend, and gifted them the ability, but they never taught the people how to do it. We had benders of all sorts who can wield their power, but they used it as something unnatural and outside of themselves. The original masters taught the people how to truly harness their element. Through them the element stopped being an uncomfortable tool and started being an extension of who they were. Touph is an amazing earthbender, not simply because she is powerful, but because to her the Earth was as much a part of her as her own limbs. If you think about it this way, then it isn't exactly a retcon.

Original doesn’t mean where they how people got bending. Original Benders are basically parts of nature that the people mimicked. Naturally Bison - Air, Dragons have fire, Moon pushed and pulled the water, and Moles dig through the earth. People were given bending from the lion turtles. That changes noting, the original benders are still the Animals n the moon are still the original benders. Even in the flash back with Won, he was given fire and he danced with the dragon. Just cus we get additions info or clarify doesn’t retcon anything. Earth benders can still copy the badger moles and learn how to earth bend, if you are not a bender, you cant copy anything and become a bender.

I think with original airbending what it was is that humans got the ability to bend from Lion-Turtles but then the Lion-Turtles left humans so nobody even remembered about them so I think the bending they gave didn't get passed on as such, but rather the potential to bend became a genetic thing but the ability had to be rediscovered and that happened from the animals. I think there were benders but they had very little ability until they watched the animals and learned the secrets. So in a sense, both things were true. After all, not everyone can learn to bend - you have to have the potential. So to be a bender, you need to have descended for someone the Lion-Turtles gave the ability to, but to be good at it you need training and the various "Original benders" are where humans got that knowledge to know how to use the ability.

Lion Turtles only lend humans the ability to element bend temporarily. Remember that when the first Avatar Wan separated the physical world and spiritual world, the lion turtle said humans are now ready to live in this dawning new age on their own and doesn't need their protection anymore (having them looked after, by letting them live on their back and lend bending powers when they go outside). After the separation, they took away the bending. But other spirits also already have the ability of elements. That's where the succeeding humans learnt bending. So it is infact correct that those can be considered the source of bending from then on. And in time, the history of first Avatar and lion turtles have been forgotten and it isn't unlikely at all, it happens irl across history that predates earliest civilizations.

I get what you’re saying about the retcon, but think about it in this way: yes, the lion turtles are the ones who give humans the ability to bend the elements. But the sky bison, dragons, badger moles etc are essentially like the personifications of their respective elements. So although the lion turtles give humans the power, the other animals are the ones that gave them the concept of “mastering” it. Kinda looking back to book 1 of Last Airbender, when Yue told the story of how waterbenders saw how the moon pushed and pulled the tides and learned how to do it themselves. So lion turtles just give humans the power, they don’t give them any type of learning or ideals behind it.

the idea is that the lion turtles are powerful being able to bend other’s energy and therefore giving and taking away bending. i guess that after their era, those that had bending could pass it down through genetics. the animals however, certain species have always had their specific bending, and humans that were given the power were able to learn by watching them. they would have had the power regardless, but not possessed the style and ability in the actual related martial art: just like it was evident in the difference between the first avatar’s firebending (which he learned watching the dragons and through moves like the dancing dragon) and the rest of the villagers to whom the element was given, but they just threw it around without knowing better.

The lionturtles gave bending to humans as a gift... Bisons were just born with the ability to fly from the start. So that makes them the 'original' airbenders, since they could do that before humans. A lionturtle didn't give the ability to breathe fire to dragons, it's just part of being a dragon. Badger moles didn't learn to dig and feel vibrations in the ground from a lion turtle. You can even see Wan dancing with a dragon in the flashback, so he was learning more about firebending from the original master - in the sense that nature and animals are masters of certain things [edit: and we can always learn more about ourselves by paying attention to things in nature]. Make sense?

They didn’t retcon the origins of bending. The lion turtles gave bending through energy bending, we saw the dragons as the original fire benders and badger moles as the first earth benders meanwhile, the coy fish moon gods gave water benders their ability during ATLA. The lion turtle also taught Aang how to energy bend. Now we see the flying bison as air benders. Another great reaction; we are nearing the end of book three so let’s go.

Spartan asking for Zahir vs Tenzin gives me a smile! Tenzin is a master truly a master, but Zahir is pragmatic and he's a different kind of master who just needs to let go of any "earthly desires"... Im betting on an huge change villain preferences from Spartan :) with episode 12 being the cherry on the top of the cake!... Zahir thruly philosophical driven relentlessness in achieving what he thinks is the right way, puts im on another and above level in the Avatar pantheon of antagonistic characters that elevate the show... and from a certain point of view he's right!... Like all other Korra's antagonists before him! Their problem is the extrem mesures and the way to achieve them that removes balance to their decisions! End goals are not above the way to get them... Althought that is, of course, morality and normalized ethics of the group that are always related to values and their factores of influence.

The lion turtles gave humans the ability to control the elements which isn't necessarily the same as bending for example the scene when wan fought against the hunters after he learned how to bend from the dragon it was completely different from how they used their bending.... Dragons badger moles and air bisons used bending as away of life not to fight which is what humans learned from them which is why I say the lion turtles didn't give humans the traditional way of bending but instead simply gave people power to control the elements but later dragons bisons and badger moles taught them how to bend the elements

Giving powers ≠ having it naturally The badgers and bisons are the first natural benders that evolved and learn from the earth around them. The lion turtles possess the energy and spirit and ability to just bestow the powers without the person or thing needing to learn it naturally

The animals were the original "benders" of their elements, but humans didn't inherit the actual abilities from them. They simply learned the different styles from them.

I think in this universe animals are the original benders and the lion turtles learned how to give specific elements to others. I don’t think it’s really known how they got this ability or where they even came from.

its still possible for Air Bisons, Dragons and Badger Moles to exist long before the Lion Turtles gave bending abilities to humans. But i dont think the Lion Turtles gave abilities to these animals, they just had it

It’s a tough one to take on the think the bisons born with the air, bending ability, same as the line turtle so technically I guess the bisons and the lion turtle are the first

stop reading the garbage comments of people who never understood the lion turtles and didn't pay attention. the creators have been wanting to tell the story of the first avatar since AtLA but couldn't find a way to make it work. Lion Turtles gave power to humans (think like giving them a sword), and just like Wan he mentioned the others were just "fire tossers" not controlling the element. Wan has a scene where he does the dragon dance and gets taught how to properly firebend from its source. there is no retcon ffs

Definitely is a ret con 😂 just because they couldn’t make it work them doesn’t mean it works any better now so

@@Crazy-pl1lo I think I'll trust the creators than some rando who doesn't understand what "couldn't make it work" means (i.e - couldn't fit it into the storyboards or make room for it to make sense with Aang's journey)

Don't take the idea of the animals being the 'original masters' too literally, it just means they are symbolic of the elements and seeing a dragon breathe fire, or a bison flying, was probably inspiring to any benders who saw it. The animals weren't out there deliberately teaching all the cultures or anything, they are still animals in the wild. Like, I would say birds were the original masters of flight, before we created certain technology - that's a real world equivalent of what they are saying in the ATLA universe.

The lion turtles were like gods and they give bending to humans who did not have bending originally. The animals on the other hand were natural benders. U should read the comics u will get more insight in this concept.

The "Original Benders lore was retconned" complaint is stupid. It doesn't make sense in ATLA that humanity learned bending from the OG Benders, and were able to pass it from parent to child at birth, unless there's something OTHER than learning bending from the OG benders. Did Toph NOT have Earthbending before she met the Badger moles? Why didn't other Southern Water Tribe members just LEARN Waterbending from the Ocean and Moon instead of leaving Katara as the last bender? Why didn't Sokka just learn Airbending from Appa during the series if he felt useless? Why did Energybending remove Ozai's bending instead of Aang like, editing Ozai's memories of learning Firebending? Answers: Of course she did. Because there's something else at play. Because he physically could not. Because bending isn't just something you learn. 100% compliant with the Wan Flashback.

You're not wrong about that lore logic but I also like to say to look at it from a history point of view. Not too many people even know the story of the original Avatar or the world before spirit world was sealed. So maybe it's one of those "they say the original benders.... (insert animal here)."

anime type art can be hard to recognise people - that's why traditionally you get things like really extreme hair that you can recognise. In this case, they were intentionally trying to make him hard to recognise quickly, so they hide his features with all that hair and beard.

Lol no, Giving =/= Teaching. Lion Turtles GAVE the bending powers to people, but they did NOT bend the elements themselves. It was the sky bisons, dragons, badgermoles and the moon that actually bent the elements. The people who received the elements from the Lion turtles saw the animals (and the moon) and learned how to bend the elements they were given and not just throw the fire around or splash the water.
