Airborne Ranger - 1988 - MS-DOS Game Review

This was one of my favorite games that I could really play well as a kid :) Both deaths were due to landmines. When flying over it it can be seen as small bumps on the ground. On the ground the bumps are a bit bigger. When stepping onto landmines it means instadeath.

Nice review! I remember this one.. I use to run a BBS and had it in my VIP/Files/Warez section. Got me thinking about bring an internet telnet-able board up again loaded up with classic door games just for nostalgia's sake...

That's a pretty good idea! Surely there are modem simulators that will allow you to connect old games over the internet?

@@msdosgamereviewsI wish! Most BBS door games used the BBS as its front-end loader. I know there are stand alone loaders for some of the games like Solar Realms titles, SRE, BRE, and FE games. I think there is even one for LORD "Legend of the Red Dragon" but no intrabbs league play or add-on's. So the game play is non existent just lets you sample what it would look like. Last time I checked 10+ years ago there were still some telnet able bbs's online with door games but the good ones were not setup for on a network "multiplayer" as those networks dont exist anymore. Wouldn't be anything for me once I had a BBS online to do some creative batch file work and create multiple instances of those certain games and trick them to allow users to logon to each and not only see but play the games with full functionality. I could even endorse duplicate accounts and maybe get a few people really into league play. Hell I use to structure my days and nights around my Barren Realms Elite turns and there were dozens of people I knew of just like me back in the day.

This was in the top 5 Commodore 64 games I ever played . the C64 was even better than the dos version

You are correct, the early days of DOS were known for terrible graphics.

06:56 Buddy you died not because someone killed you, but because you stepped on a mine. All around you is a mine field. This is why you should pay attention where you land. Point of every mission is to get to the top of the map. So you run. But if you see enemies in the corner of the screen then you lie down and you move stealthy. You throw grenades rarely - keep them for the top of the map and you know that when you shoot - you attract attention. I haven't seen you how many backpacks you threw, but you have a total of 3 to throw and then you jump off the plane. Point is - you throw the other bags on key positions, but away from enemies and you go there to get more supplies as you progress trough the map. So in the end you're stocked like Chuck Norris when you reach the top and you seek and destroy everything, most importantly - parked planes and stuff. Sometimes you just need to take a photo. Depends on the mission objective. When you accomplish the mission you MUST go to the extraction point ON TIME and await the pick-up chopper and when they drop the ladder try not to miss it. That's all.
