On our visit to New Zealand to see Family we went to Nelson Airport on the South Island.A Turbo Prop Fokker Friendship takes off for Christchurch in 1986.

This is a video of my childhood. I grew up in Nelson, my dad would regularly take me to the airport to watch the Friendships take off, standing where you did. I also had friends in Wellington and spent many school holidays flying in one going over to visit, trying to see how many of the green sweets I could get on the time before landing.

Many thanks for sharing this very iconic film, this brings back fond memories to me, when I was little, my parents would go to the Auckland Terminal Airport, which was way back in the early 70s, I would always run up the stairs on to the balcany where its open, exactly the same as you've film here, just to catch a climpse off the N.A.C F.27-200 Fokker Friendship either taking off, or coming into land, never forgotten hearing those wonderful Turbo Props going hard.

Feeling my age here 😮. I flew from Auckland to Nelson in June 1986 and back for the New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships on oneofthese. . That sound is distinctive and deafening.

My very first flight aboard a commercial airliner was Wellington to Nelson aboard a Fokker Friendship in the summer of 1961-62. Last time I flew on the type would be 18 years later, Maroochydore - Sydney (Australia) in the summer of 1979-80. A hardy old bird, and the Rolls Royce Dart engines sound great (with hands over ears against the screech). But they were fuel-guzzlers whose use-by date was definitely well past.

Thanks for sharing the old video - it take time and effort to convert old analogue movies! The Friendship was very noisy when seated in the first three rows with the prop noise right beside you. The video certainly brings back memories, and yes the video panning and zooming was done slowly and carefully - appreciate you converting this to KZbin!

A very good video, filmed in the days before fuzzy logic image stabilisation. You had a steady hand and didn't over-do the use of the zoom. Great stuff!

Thanks for posting this gem. Brings back fond memories of flying between Oamaru - Timaru - Wellington - Hamilton. Nothing like the sound of those old RR Dart engines spooling up :) I can almost smell them turning and burning.

Awesome stuff and when i saw the aircrafts name "Kahu" it bought back lots of Memories as i remember flying on this very aircraft, Used to fly on these regularly when i served in the Royal New Zealand Navy and went home on leave, was cheaper and quicker than to drive or take a bus, Cant have been much longer after this and these were phased out and replaced with smaller Beechcraft 1900D and Bombardier Aircraft. Aso you must have been rich to have a video camera back then hahahaha

Wooow...Thanx for posting!! Grew up with the F27, along with MCA's HS748s,and SAFEs Argosys. Like all Dart powered aircraft, a real screecher winding up. Friendships always seemed to have a 'softer' sound on take off, maybe because of the high wing, unlike the HS748s with that low wing produced 'Whistle' that sounded so good. Argosys always whistled but probibly due to that twin-boom tailplane...Missed sounds all the same.

I wanted to make a large scale model of this aircraft. Dad use to work in wellington as a builder and I would sit each school hoilday just watching them all day I got to the factory in Holland in 1994 and asked them for help, I was shown to there plan rooms and was told to help my self, which I did, thu helped me photo copy all that I needed. I have a large folder of clips and old air nz postes as well, may be I should share with all

I'm certain I saw a Friendship at Taupo circa 1990 but not sure if they ever flew there.

Trevor, yes i forgot about the SAAB, Big regional places were serviced by the Bombadier, and places like Nelson etc were serviced by the Saab then the smaller centres were serviced by the Beechcraft, The Freindship used to service all airports in NZ before this and have no idea how many they operated, Flights between the main Cities were handled by the Boeing 737. I wonder where these old girls are now. Recycled into coke cans probably. Where do planes get cut up and recycled these days, apart from the famous boneyards in the usa?
