My last flight on a F27 Fokker Friendship was in June 1986. Flying home after racing in the 1986 New Zealand Secondary Schools Cross Country Championships. 42nd in the Senior Girls race from memory. Used to fly the NAC in the early 1970s.

Look at Nelson Airport now! Up to six Q300s and or ATRs on the tarmac at any one time...Air Nelson dominates under the Air New Zealand brand. Huge engineering base now takes care of the Air NZ Q300 and ATR 72-500 & -600 fleet as well. Nelson itself is a very popular and much bigger city today than it was in 1986.

Wow, blast from the past Trevor, thank you. You may not be interested, but ZK NAO is still flying night freight & is due to be retired at the end of this year. I crewed on her a few years back.

Thanks for putting this video up, it was nice to see the old airport again. I always enjoyed going to this airport as a kid in the 80s, a fair bit more freedom at the airport back then. I'd forgotten about the viewing deck, but could remember the (unrestricted)walkway by the water feature, and the awesomely 70s carpet style ;), not to mention playing the arcade games. For any overseas viewers, flying in & out of smaller airports has got a lot cheaper recently (if you book far enough in advance at least): www.tvnz.co.nz/one-news/new-zealand/air-new-zealand-confirms-entry-level-fare-drop-over-40-domestic-routes-but-wont-front-details Nelson airport is busier now, but flights to smaller airports are cheaper too.
