Your "Be prepared to Walk Away" got me Laughing. Just this morning on one of the Navion Groups, a young man posted a question. he and his Wife, neither are even Student Pilots yet, were looking at planes, saw, and fell in love with a Navion Project, then Saw a second, and bought that. They were asking where they should start. Both Aircraft were complete, and they had logs for everything it appears. Seemed like Nice Kids, but they're at the "Still don't know what Questions to Ask" stage. Oh Also, if you are a Buyer, looking to get a Pre-Buy Done, Pick an A&P Who doesn't have any kind of relationship with the current Owner, or the aircraft itself. Your Pre-Buy inspector needs to be looking out for YOUR interests, not the Seller's.

Exactly! Your pre buy mechanic/inspector is a "hired gun" for the buyer! Thanks for watching!

When I purchased my first airplane a few months ago, I debated (briefly) whether or not to have a pre-buy done. A lot of work had been done on the plane already by the seller and the previous owner to get it up to snuff, a thorough annual inspection had been done last June, and I figured it was unlikely that there would be any major issues. But I knew that it would be foolish not to have one done and, as it turns out, it was a good thing I did. A few issues were found that needed to be addressed. Two of them were airworthiness issues, albeit easy fixes. One was a missing bolt on one of the metal engine baffles so it was moving around and would cause some abrasion, and the other was a crack in a fuel primer line. The seller had those fixed while the airplane was still in the shop. The rest were not urgent and didn't ground the plane so he reduced the price based on the estimate to fix them and I'm having them taken care of. I get what you were saying about not falling in love with the plane and being prepared to walk away. This plane is pretty much perfect for my current mission, and it had the added benefit of being right there at my local airport so I didn't have to travel to see it. If the pre-buy had turned up a deal-breaker, I would have been cosmically disappointed but I was prepared to walk away if it did. Fortunately, it didn't and I'm now the proud owner of my 1974 Beechcraft Musketeer Sport 180. I do love this plane now, and I'm really glad I had the pre-buy done so I could let myself love it.

Having a local history of the aircraft helps a lot. Great that you have a plane that you love to fly. That's what its all about! Thanks for watching!

My shop just finished a prebuy on an '03 C182, mid time engine with pretty bad corrosion on the cylinder walls (seller never disclosed and even tried to dismiss saying all cylinders have corrosion). The buyer was then able to negotiate down the price of a top end overhaul from the original price. Definitely was worth the $800 or so for the inspection.

Hey sir can I get your contact info, looking for someone to do a pre buy for me around the DFW area.

I don't think your job is to be a "hired gun" to save your client money. Just do an honest inspection and report on the condition. I've bought and sold a bunch of planes. When the prebuy guy shows up to trash the plane (and the deal), it doesn't really help anyone. I've had a buyer try to low ball me after the mechanic was acting like the plane had a bunch of problems that it didn't have. I told him to get lost and he lost out on a great plane AND his $500 inspection fee. This particular mechanic never even opened the log books.

The one thing you said was LOG BOOKS as an A&P/IA i can look at the log books and see what kind maintenance has been done. Pre-Buys shouldn't be thousands of dollars but i support pre-buys its a MUST have.....

Remember the prebuy is a cursory inspection and no mechanic can catch every single item. Too many good mechanics will no longer do a prebuy because when problems are found later on that were not at all evident, they were wrongly brought into litigation.

Absolutely correct!

But no mention of the single most important document... the AD Compliance Record. Every aircraft is required to have a list of every applicable AD and a description of how it was complied with. And no, a logbook entry with "All ADs complied with" is not suffecient nor legal. Also, make sure the aircraft has a Registration and an Airworthiness Certificate. Make sure the seller's name is the same as on the Registration. Lots of shady people out there, selling airplanes that aren't legally theirs.

Interesting enough, the one item that I have found omitted on most aircraft records is the AD compliance record! Thanks for watching!

Never heard of pretty inspection 10 years ago. If you and your mechanic can't judge a good plane don't buy one.

G, day Bill at Hanger Rats channel From Sydney, Australia. I now have a better understanding of the custom of selling and buying a plane, with the expert airworthiness "prebuy inspection" Q1. Should a prebuy inspection confirm that ADs and manufacture service bulletins have been completed? Q2. Should a prebuy fly the plane to check the engine, and inputs to surfaces? Q3. Is there an FAA website quick check of current tail number? 🌴🚶♂️
@HangaRatz3 жыл бұрын
A1. Yes. A2. Not necessary. Prebuy, depending on aircraft complexity, can all be done on the ground. As the sale progresses additional items (avionics, etc.) can be checked in flight. That ends up as a seller/buyer arrangement when the seller determines they have a valid buyer. I can't afford to support a flying club for tire kickers! A3. Yes. In the US, www.faa.gov Other countries (CASA, Transport Canada, CAA, etc.) have similar areas you can confirm that information

Thank you for the information! First time airplane buyer here. Is there a way to view inspections past inspections performed on an airplane? The bird I've been eyeballing had a price drop and I'm curious if it was due to an inspection performed or the seller is getting impatient. Thank you for your time.
@HangaRatz Жыл бұрын
Not really. Unless the prospective seller tells you who conducted a previous pre-buy inspection. Thanks for watching!

Nor did I. Remember, on this one I was the seller. I stayed out of the way. We'll try to do an actual prebuy inspection in a future episode from the point of the buyer. Thanks for watching!

As someone new to aircraft ownership or at least trying to get into it where is the best place to find good mechanics to do pre-buys?
@HangaRatz3 жыл бұрын
Talk to some aircraft owners and find one of their mechanics. Grapevine is your best bet!

Is it OK to hire a local guy to do your pre buy or should you hire a guy close to home and pay for his travel to and from the airplane's location?
@HangaRatz3 жыл бұрын
Whatever makes best sense. Just try not to use the attending mechanic. If you are a member of a type club they may have area recommendations.

Would you still recommend a pre-buy if the airplane comes with a fresh annual w/purchase? (Small airplane like a Cessna 150)
@HangaRatz3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would. An annual at purchase from the seller could be a very quick pencil whip type annual…
