Flying on one of Cubana's Ilyushin Il-96-300 on a domestic leg from Cayo Coco to Havana. Flight CU 361 is a Cubana service from Buenos Aires to Havana with a short stop in Cayo Coco carrying mostly Argentinian tourists.
Cubana is the last civil operator of the Il-96 worldwide. This specific airframe - CU-T1717 - was acquired from Aeroflot in 2014 and entered service with Cubana a few months later. The aircraft is still wearing basic Aeroflot colours and the cabin interior remained in Aeroflot configuration.
The video gives you an impression of the inflight experience on one the last remaining Il-96 services.

I took this plane from London to Havana. Efficient plane. No luxury of course but it was good. Flight was just perfect.

Come on people. The plane looks OK, flies OK and all agree it has never crashed. I like her and I would like to fly in her. Its better to keep using aircraft which do the job safely than scrapping them. It gets my vote.And I wouldn't be surprised that it can operate from a rough strip too.If so I hope there is one near me if I am in an earthquake Zone and the runways are declared inop.

An A340 is a mid size plane with four engines. Still used by many airlines. You are everything else, but not an expert. May be a dabbler!

The main problem in current russian planes is not design reliability. It's maintenance. Extremely long parts delivery times (like months...) and labor quality. So one day all these planes will become unsafe... It didnt crash yet also just because there just a few of them produced and flying. Just not enough statistical data collected. As a plane - from passenger view, its no big difference from mid-aged a340.

@Zeksteve environmentally they are OK. Not the best, just average. Economically - is a different deal. If they were built in numbers of a340 - they would have been affordable to operate. But not among leaders either, a340 was not too efficient itself...

I've flewn with this plane twice from Moscow to Bangkok. As a passenger I found it very spacious. Better than the 777.

@@jimsonbrown9768 its 20 years younder, no surprise. Il-96 may look as an average widebody, but planes did not change that much visually in last 30 years. It doesnt mean they didnt change internally. Thats just and outdated design already. Just like another similiar quadjet - a340.

3+3+3 configuration helps; today they just cram 3-4-3 which isn't helpful on other competitors; but the down-side is that that Il-96 is not as profitable.

Beautiful aircraft. Surprisingly very quiet on take-off can't say that about a Boeing 777. Perhaps though on par with a 787 in terms of quietness. VERY spacious cabin configuration and the isles look far wider then many of the "heavies" i've flown on. All around a great flight thank you for sharing this rare gem.

Brilliant video! You got a really nice wing view on a Il-96. You're super lucky to fly on it because it's a rare plane since not much airlines have it on their fleet nowadays. IK this doesn't have anything to do with the video but, I'm so glad I got to live 8 years in Cuba it was so good, the places are so gorgeous, and the people are so nice! If you plan on going to Cuba, if you're trying to get the full experience visit "Pinal del Rio" and 'The Havana". Trust me the people are real nice to tourists.

0 Casualties, this along with the a380 are the most safest planes, I would certainly feel safer in a il-96 or a380 than a Boeing..

The IL-96 is back in production. Cubana has an an order for 3 of the modernized IL-96 400M. The new version has improved engines and new wings. I wouldn't be at all surprised to see Aeroflot purchase the new version. They have returned to buying Russian with large orders for Sukhoi SSJ-100's and the Irkut MC-21. Other possible markets are China, Iran, South East Asian countries and Central America. The SSJ-100 has currently flown by a Mexican Airline.

Il-96 was never out of production. Only without orders or with very small orders from russian government - one plane per year. It's a nice plane that came up in the wrong time.

Doubt Aeroflot would buy any modernized IL-96. It's just there for special orders. Isn't it just a modernisation of existing frames?

You are talking about Il 96-400.But the IL 96 itself was produced 30 .Previously there were silt 86they were released 106 pieces.This is the safest aircraft and all of its systems are duplicated 4 times, in addition it has the most stable eluminators in the world and is the safest aircraft

I have flown on this aircraft a couple of times from Gatwick to Havana and back again and it was very comfortable. Unfortunately Cubana no longer fly to airports in England, so I don't expect I will get another opportunity.

Я успел, летал за океан, 12 грёбаных часов, зато с кинотеатром, проектор был с тремя огромными линзами,словно фонари от светомузыки, наушники были похожи на стетоскоп, и курить тогда можно было так, что хоть сзади вешай топор)

I was in Cuba last summer, in June of 2019. and the flight costs about 100 euros from Cayo Coco to Havana (Jose Marti airport)

Летал именно на этом самолете из Москвы в Ханой и обратно в 2008 году. Попали в сильную турбулентность над Гималаями. Трясло так, что весь корпус скрипел, а я не удержал стаканчик с горячим чаем и пролил на себя. Было реально страшно, но всё обошлось.

But US&EU astronauts travel to Baikonur in Russian plane ( TU-134/204)...they travel to space station ( 70% made in Russia) in Russian Soyuz Rockets...they receive goods through Progress cargo vehicle( made in Russia)..and return to earth in Russian vehicle!...

This plane used to fly for Aeroflot, pretty sure as the body and engine paint is the same. The last IL96 Aeroflot flight was in 2014. So common, ppl. This plane is not so bad

Awesome Video Dude! The IL-96 is just a beauty :)) Where do you book the flight? I will be in HAV in May 2017 and i am really really interested to book the flight ex Cayo Coco to HAV. But on the website of cubana i was not able to find any flights to or from cayo coco .. :(

Try one of their flights from Santiago de Cuba to HAV (some flights from Europe stop there). I don't know if they still fly the route, it was a once weekly EZE-CCC-HAV service. I got in touch with their office in Paris and booked it by phone.

Is this just older version, or why there is no passenger lights and air vents? Visually i always like this wide design with smooth nose shape, but isn't that worse on aerodynamics therefor on fuel efficiency?

As I understand it, the Ilyushin 96 was an answer to the first three wide-body aircraft the US produced in the late sixties, though more contemporary with the Airbus A-300. Four engines needed for the workload of the DC-10, and Lockheed 1011 it was meant to go against. That this plane also flies to Toronto explains its presence in the Cubana fleet. I would wonder if it was the only wide-bodied aircraft they have?

Paul Gracey il 86 was. This machine rather was the answer to 747-400. Glass cockpit, winglets and better navigation. It did inherit 86's reability

An Il-86 had to be reengined. Check out an IL-86 with its tiny lowbypass engines. Very underpowered design, I must admit with all my respect to Russia. And so IL-86+engines (+minor tweaks like reinforced hardpoints)=IL-96

IL 96 has not only new engines, but absolutely new redesigned wing. It's body is shorter than 86's one. In short IL 96 is a new plane with Il 86's body design)) It's nice that you like our aircraft

@@sunnyfon9065 This aircraft burns to much kerosene per passenger/mile! Per pass/mile it burns about 30% more than a A340 - and this aircraft is not very economic. And the new A350 are even more economic. Cubana is not able to fly this aircrafts cause of US sanctions.

Letzebourger, Il-96 existed before A340.

@@sunnyfon9065 You are right - maiden flight for Il96 was in 1988 maiden flight for A340 was in 1991, thats not a big difference. Russian aircrafts ALWAYS burned a lot more fuel than western counterparts, And this is true till today, even the SSJ is not very economic. And thats not the only reason why airlines from Europe/America dont want to buy this aircrafts or a selling this aircrafts. Aerodynamicaly russian aircrfts are mostly better than US/european aircrafts - but this does not compensate guzzling engines.

AN IL-96-300 for a Cayo Coco to Havana run. No wonder Cubana is having problems.

It was just a quick stop on the way from Buenos Aires to Havana, quite a few tourists from Argentina disembarked in Cayo Coco.

Short flight with minimal fuel burn. If it’s flying and carrying fare paying passengers, it’s making more money than sitting on the ground for four hours between long haul flight.

Why a few passengers from CCC to HAV on that flight since HAV is Cubana’s hub - what I mean is that many passengers always fill many airliners to be full on way to their main hub airports? I am curious, I wonder if that Cubana flight was full from EZE to CCC before its way to HAV? I would like to experience on aCubana flight one day especially a Russian made aircraft.
