This is very useful information. However, it is not as definitive as it could be. Here are my recommendations for more accurate results. 1. Label the samples with an easily seen number. 2. List the recipe for each next to the number ON the sample. 3. Use a more standardized testing method such as the rebound/Schmidt hammer OR the scratch test. 4. Calibrate your measuring devices. Once you pushed the PSI tester past its maximum you invalidated all subsequent tests. If you must use a PSI tester obtain one with a much higher range. The general rule for testing is that all devices are not accurate in the top or bottom 10% of their range. Also use a drill press with an adapter for the drill press head to push the tester down. Keep in mind that structural cement can go as high as 10,000 PSI or well below 3000 PSI. 5. Put a link to your spreadsheet. I would love to give that a good looking over. Thanks for your in-depth review of aircrete. PS, How would foam balls or other light weight materials improve your mix? PSS For those of us making planter boxes and what not that sets on the ground a weed eater test would be great!

Let me start off by saying how much I truly appreciate the effort you have put into these tests. Absolutely invaluable knowledge that you are giving away for free, and I truly appreciate it. Having said that, there are two other categories of testing that I personally would love to see. One of them being a pull test. Where you drive a standard wood screw of about 2 in of length into the center of each block, and set up a scale to determine how much force it takes to pull the screw out of the block. The second test I would love to see is a tensile strength test. Where you mold bricks in a bread pan, supported on each end, and put a weight on the center of it building more and more wait until the block cracks in half. Once again, thank you so much for the work you do and the effort you put into your videos.

Harry, I love what you are doing here. I have a few suggestions for you on your testing though. 1) Figure the area of your push meter probe head. This can then be converted to PSI measurements, for ease of communicating compressive strength. 2) Insert different color strips of construction paper into each mix, according to mix ratios. Other variables can then be written on the tabs. 3) Build a lever type tool to push the force meter down onto the cement surface, squarely & evenly. Screed off the tops so they are smooth also. 4) If you do multiple day tests, then mark the wet cement into quarters & number them. 5) Have a covered area for storing the samples during the month test cycle, so they are safe. Are you planning any tests with rebar or wire reinforcement? Fiber reinforcement?

WOW! I originally thought the 32 (I said 35) would be good on a dome, but I can do the 100 since after 4 weeks it is so hard, and so very strong - that is even LESS costly! I have definitely got to go back to watch ALL of your videos to get fully "Ed-u-ma-cay-ted" to do it right. The difference at 4 weeks is amazing. I didn't think it would make that much of a difference, but it is like night and day! Proper curing the full 4 weeks looks like it is far more important than I suspected before doing anything to stress the structure. Thanks again, Harry!

Hi Harry, would a 150 lbs be possible without collapsing for insulation. What you do you think. After the final tests, how high can you go with the addition of foam for a foundation using aircrete. Could you use 50 or would you stick with 32. Some of your samples at 50 with the addition of an accelerant did almost as well. let us know what your recommendations would be if you were to build a foundation.

What brand of meter did you use? Is it accurate for destructive testing. You are giving the values as pounds. Foot pounds? Pounds per square inch? Square foot? If the failing point is 100-120 PSI, I would not consider aircrete as a foundation. This is far below normal compression for regular concrete at around 3000 PSI minimally. Also porosity weakens concrete. Aircrete might work as an insulation due to its porosity, but the only value I have seen for its insulating properties is R6. Have you actually measured its effectiveness some way?

Not to be critical of your experience, but to be testing samples of different sizes confuses the result. Compressive strength of AirCrete is inversely proportional to the the amount of foam present in the "cement-water-baking soda-foam mixture" type of additives present after 4 weeks of curing. As opposed to cement-water-sand-crushed stone standard mixture for Concrete production, AirCrete is lighter but has much less compressive strength. Thanks for your measurements. I conclude that Aircrete has insulating value at the cost of decrease in compressive strength. Would a reasonable person sleep under a roof of AirCrete?! You be the judge!

Kate Mwariri Concrete (not aircrete) has an extremely high compression rate (can’t crush it) but it has very little tensile strength (can be pulled apart easily). Steel reinforcement such as rebar is the opposite. When the two materials are combined you get a incredibly strong system for structural application. I just don’t comprehend how that can be achieved with aircrete. I’m not suggesting it can’t be done, I just don’t know..
@mwindanji6714

@@RedefineLiving There are additives - like basalt - or micro rebar which will vastly improve the results of compressive strength testing - if you don't want to go with rebar or maya like a traditional concrete pour. I haven't tried it yet personally, but I'm thinking it (addition of basalt or micro rebar) will improve the end product. I'm not in a freeze-thaw area - but earthquakes aren't unheard of here and I would like that extra stability.
@RedefineLiving
@RedefineLiving 5 жыл бұрын
Kate Mwariri the micro rebar and basalt are excellent products but they improve the tensile strength, not compression. I realize there are additives but his tests are around 100-200 as where traditional concrete is 2,500-4,000.

50 gallon means 94 lb bag of cement 6 gallons of water gives you 7 gallons of cement slurry and you put that in a 50 gallon bucket and filled to the top with foam. The 10 20 30 50 + 100 are the size of the container you will mixture cementing and filled to the top with foam. That allows you to make consistent batches by using a specific size container. The foam density was 3 lb for a 5 gallon bucket. The baking soda is about a tablespoon worth n a 94 lb bag of cement. Thanks for watching and thanks for your comment

Have it PARTLY filled with fiberglass insulation, such as what might be in an old wall. @@dennismadigan2023 I live in Kenya most of the year. My walkway is made with 50% "hardcore" (stone that houses are built from here) and 50% aircrete. The aircrete seems to hold up better after 3 years. The stone tends to crumble/shed and breaks easily when cut less than 9 inches thick. Compared to local concrete - aircrete is about the same. But compared to concrete at home in the US - the aircrete doesn't wear as well. They aren't side by side comparisons - just comparing the wear on my 60 year old sidewalks vs. the 3 year old aircrete - US cement hands-down. I'm at the age where I don't want to have to re-do stuff. Next (and last) project will be an aircrete dome. I'm hoping the insulating properties will be equal to the stone for keeping the inside cool.

Kate Mwariri Thank you for your valuable information. Yep! I'm at that age too. But when I do I try to get the biggest bang for my buck but if it doesn't last there's no sense. For your dome and similar projects it should work fine.

The issue you would have would be from furniture. If you weigh 200lbs and you sit in a chair, the feet of the chair could start to poke into the surface especially if you lean back on the chair. Why not just use regular concrete for that application?
