AI would do those things so well, we could not live without it, and we would give it more and more control over every aspect of our lives, until… we would be unable to make independent decisions ourselves, as humans. Holy crap. We seem to be hitting the fun / mind-blowing portion of the 'S' curve with the pace and nature of AI advances. This is sooo reminiscent of the early days of home computing... only perhaps even more wildly accelerated.
@yankee2yankee2167 ай бұрын
The early days of home computing were fascinating, but they almost completely lacked the element of threat, of danger. Few people imagined that they might, some day, take over. Given that technology leaps forward already, AI might/will accelerate that, maybe exponentially. What we already can’t adjust rapidly enough to, will happen faster and faster. Regulation will lag further and further behind. That technology will find off-label uses, not all honest, or good. Let me tell you how crazy it is already. It is ALREADY well within our means to build killer drones, for a couple of hundred bucks each, with facial recognition and a gun or a grenade that could hunt down all one’s enemies… and kill them. We also have a powerful cult leader AND cult threatening to take over, the leader of which has already threatened to hunt down his enemies and jail them. He might be convinced, as his insanity progresses (he might already be there) that killer drones would be neater…

In our profit-driven world, regulations of any sort are just seen as bullets to be dodged... hurdles to be cleared... obstacles to be maneuvered around, y'know? (chuckling) Hell, the people who are relentlessly developing this stuff are understanding less and less of what it's actually doing.

Long-winded rant or “yap session” (🙄) ahead… People already used AI to push political narratives during the recent US election. The older generations bought it hook, line and sinker because they can’t spot the inconsistencies that younger, more keen-eyed folks can. We already live in a country where millions of people have given up on fact-checking outwardly misleading claims and have thrown themselves into a state of paranoia/fear, believing random conspiracies authored by anonymous online political antagonizers/foreign bad actors - just remember the whole “Q” thing. Most notably, after this past US election, when the current president and president-elect met in the Oval Office, people successfully used AI again to make it seem as though the president joined the president-elect’s movement, creating very realistic photos of the president wearing a certain red hat. There are people that believed it was real. This will continue to get worse. People will continue to be suckered into believing in absolute lies and rhetoric. People will link to AI videos when asked for evidence of their claims where previously, they couldn’t come up with anything official/searchable… but now they can just create/link manufactured evidence. They’ll continue to believe it even when told their videos are fake, because confirmation bias is already a very real struggle for many to overcome. They have to spend hours training airline pilots to rid themselves of falling victim to confirmation bias as it’s caused several aviation accidents throughout previous decades. Combine all this with the fact that basic media literacy and critical thinking is at an all-time low and we have a perfect storm on our hands. There are very few ways to combat all this currently, though we can start with mandatory permanent watermarks because at least that will prevent misinformation from the general public and require video editing knowledge. In March of last year, Elon Musk himself said he was terrified of what AI can do and that AI companies should slow down their development on such products. He probably doesn’t agree with that now, but here we are. Older generations are already the most scammed folks out there, with billions not millions of dollars lost every year. They still fall for very basic scams like having to send 30 iTunes gift cards to settle a totally fake “IRS” debt and even soulless emails with unconvincing typos/grammatical errors that state their family members are in jail or stuck in another country. Congress needs to act now, but it seems that they won’t… why would they when it can help their political cause?
