Aha! This was my birthday prez kit when I turned 6. As with all the best modellers of the early 70's- it was built with 2 tubes of glue by dinner time, painted with a few humbrol tinlets and a brush-like stick thing by bedtime.... then flown, shot down and in the landfill by the following week. Cannot wait to see what nearly fifty years of accrued skills, knowledge, tools and building materials (and yer shear creative talent obviously)- is gonna produce. This is the stuff we old duffers really dig! Ya dig?

G’day back at ya Chris! I started digging into this one and almost put it back in the box after seeing all of the issues. It’s such a cool plane and a unique scale that I said to hell with it, and decided to see it through. Hopefully I can turn it into something presentable (and of course wheels up just like we like em;)

Just FYI, the clamshell doors have a panel line gap that could be said is twice as wide as the outer door panel lines. This is only at the hinged edge. The hinges are offset and next to the door skin so they require extra clearance. When you re-scribe those lines keep it in mind so it looks the part on this larger model.

Glad to see you back and with a good subject. I've got the Airfix 1/24 Stuka to build at sometime. How about doing one of these as a Reno racer, you could have endless fun designing your own cockpit moved to the rear a bit and changing the wing shape etc. Precious Metal even had a Griffon engine with contra rotating props. I'd love to see you doing a high gloss bright colour scheme.

The panel lines on the forward 40% of the P-51D wing, not including the flaps and ailerons, were filled, smoothed, and painted over with silver paint. Access to the gun servicing doors and a couple of other little hatches are all that should remain. The filler was actually called "Acme Filler"! Who knew that Wile E. Coyote was working at North American!?!
@seanerk5kt93 жыл бұрын
Yeah, from my understanding the putty they used flaked off quickly due to the stress put on the wings during use. I know this topic is one that’s been debated at length on the inter webs so I’m sure modeling it either way is fine.

Hi With the sprue glue... if you try extra thin with plasticard instead of the sprue you might have better success as a filler.. Worth experimenting with.. Great kit this once done.. Best of luck
@ivanwomack3 жыл бұрын
Hi Carl. Plasticard is very soft so doesn't tend to make good sprue goo. Ive found clear sprue is best to use as its harder. Clear sprue is also the purest form of styrene as its had no colouring added.
@seanerk5kt93 жыл бұрын
I’m with Ivan on this one. I’ve used plasticard and it was way too soft

I had to laugh at your comment about people not knowing the difference between a P-51 and a P-40. I worked for a helmet manufacturer that came out with a graphic on a helmet they called “P-51”. It featured a caricature depiction of a P-40 with inverted gullwings and Flying Tigers style shark teeth, and blazing machine guns mounted so close to the wing root, they would have shot off the prop. I screamed at the designers to change it to no avail. The Husky calipers; I bought one thinking they would be convenient to have at times, and I find myself using them almost daily. I recently discovered those thin sanding sticks, and they’re great when trying to work small areas. I also found sanding “needles” for getting into rounded areas, such as along wing/fuselage junctions.

Those calipers come in handy dont they

Great work. It'll be enjoyable to see this venerable kit given the care and attention it needs. I do recall the release of the 1/24 range back in the 70's, but they were far too pricy for me. PS Boring? You're dealing with people who have on occasion watched paint dry.

oh what lovely timing. im picking up my eduard 1/48 P-51D-5 tomorrow, it's always nice to have somewhere to look to for techniques and painting tips and tricks , i do have one question. the models hanging from your seeling and the ones standing on shelves and such, how do you keep the dust off of them, and also how do you keep dust from getting onto ongoing projects.
@seanerk5kt93 жыл бұрын
I dust them a couple times a year. Other than the few I have in my modeling room, my other ones are in glass display cases. As far as dust on my working projects, I try to get the built before they have time to gather too much dust.

No idea how this popped up. Used to make 1/72 scale Airfix kits from about 1963 to 1969. Airfix details and quality was not as good as Revel but prices were lower

GOD! ANOTHER P-51?! HA! You think that's bad, try a Vintage Fighters P-47! Finish that - Then you're a model building hero. And the reason why I'm going bald! Worse than the Trumpeter 1/24th 190 "D". Nice gaps on the wheel pants! Almost as wide as the gap in my front teeth! I don't know about the MOOSTANG, but the shell ejection holes for the 47 are staggered. WOW! Decent fit! As Gomer says " Surprise, Surprise". I like the rudder detail. But fabric covered on the "D"? I thought that was changed to aluminum when the 51 went to bubble, due to tail flutter. Anywho, looks good, and fits surprisingly well.

@ivanwomack3 жыл бұрын
Hi. Try making some sprue goo with clear sprue. Its harder plastic, for some reason it does not seem to get the bubbles (don't know why!) and because its harder it scribes nicely when its set. Put a tiny bit of lacquer paint in it to give it a bit of colour so you can see it when you use it. I can't take credit for this, I got the tip from Will Pattison. Give it a go, I think you'll like it!

Another old Airfix 1/24 kit that ...well... needs a lot of work. I suppose that its sheer size allows for easier scratchbuilt detailing and correction... a LOT of each! I shudder to think what a Matchbox equivalent would have been like! From what I have heard, the Bandai (?) 1/24th kit of the P-51 was not any better than the Airfix kit. To add the required correct detailing to a 1/24th scale kit (cockpit, wheel wells, engine and mounting, gun bays etc.) would probably have pushed the price of the kit "through the roof".
