Airfix Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 - Build With Me! - Supercut! (Full build series start to finish)

This Supercut features all 5 parts of the Airfix Hurricane "Build with me" series, conveniently edited into one long video - so if you missed any part or really want to build along, you can! (Without all that hassle of having to click through multiple videos). This is the kind of video that is ideal to put on in the background of a modelling session - I know I do it all the time with other modelling videos - a great way to learn new skills!
The Hawker Hurricane was a fighter aircraft that saw service with the RAF during the Second World War. In this video I complete a long-format build of the Hawker Hurricane Mk.1 Plastic model kit in 1/72 scale.
The version I have here is from the Starter Set (or "gift set" as they are sometimes called) which comes with some small pots of paint, a brush and some cement. The perfect start for a beginner!
The aim of this series is to give you the chance to quite literally "build with me" - so if you have this kit and want to give it a go, this is the perfect video for you!

Apologies if there are any editing errors in the video - I recorded this series as I build the model so there were very long takes and lots of footage to edit. The activity in this video took about 1.5 hours which was then edited to less than half an hour - still quite a sizeable amount of work (and the perfect chance for errors to slip in)!
The audio quality in this series is known to be slightly lower than my normal videos due to the use of the in-built microphone in my camera - the use of my "good" mic would be very difficult to do as it isn't compatible with the camera. This is an area I'm looking at improving and overcoming in the future

I see some negative comments. To me this is not the place. The ting about modeling is it yiurs you can do it however you want. Regardless if this guy is good or bad in your opinion. There always someone better and there is always someone thats not experienced. This video i see is to help people learn from it. Or to help people get into modeling. Instead negative comments how about show support and help ithers gst involved. What if it was your son thats just beginning or your father whos done it when he was a kid. I'm wounded army vet EID 2011, then in 3 yrs of therapy afterwards . It helped with therapy both of my wrist being broken to other injuries and surgeries, and my ptsd. Regardless it looks like a museum piece or not its therapeutic. It has helped me and other soldiers. Sorry i just dont like seeing negative comments. Cause we all started somewhere and were not born experts at it.

Agreed. The point of this video is for the beginner. Therefore it needs to been with that in mind. So why not build it as so. The end result is achievable by a beginner building it as he has. If he had built it as a more experienced builder achieving a far better result a newby to the hobby would probably be disappointing with his result and give up. Its the grass routes videos like this which helps the hobby grow. I've been building kits since the 70's yet still enjoy watching these beginner guides.

Negative comments are not needed. Discussions on approaches which vary are always good. The key is experimenting and enjoying the hobby. I like to watch different ways to do stuff. Even refine my own sometimes ill fated attempts!

Been building scale models for 30 years and I've never washed a model before painting. I use acrylic, enamel, even artist oil paints. Spray paint, airbrush, paint brush, the whole nine. Not once have I had a single model have any problems with the finish afterwards. I have models that I put together and painted well over 20 years ago and they were never washed and have never had a problem with the paint finish to this day. I would never tell a person how they should or should not handle the assembly or painting of their model. The great thing about this hobby is that there are so many ways to achieve some very interesting results. If washing your model prior to assembly works for you than by all means you should absolutely give it a good scrubbing. I am only conveying my own personal experience. In thirty years of not washing models I have never had one have a problem with the paint job. On a related note I tend to paint as I go instead of putting a model together and then painting it. I will assemble some sub-sections and paint them before moving on. Other modelers might find that a waste of time. It's all a matter of personal preference. Having said all that, I would just like to add that you did a fine job with this Hurricane and it turned out very nice. Excellent work Sir.

Thanks! Airfix does recommend washing the parts, it’s in their instructions. Granted, I don’t always bother but there have been times when excessive mould release on the plastic has prevent acrylics from sticking, instead pulling back and pooling in blobs

Hello Matt, many thanks for posting this video. I have followed it whilst building my own model and found your tutorial very helpful indeed and a great learning experience. This is only my 2nd build as a fully grown adult. I’ve really enjoyed it and found a new, relaxing hobby. I just watched this video after just completing this kit!.I painted the lamp in silver a day didn't like it so I just stuck some Bacofoil shiny side down with PVA. I also had to use the canopy from a Revell Hurricane kit after an accident but it fitted.Your videos on the Spitfire Mk 1a and P40 Tomahawk are excellent and I've had fun building and painting them.

I have the complete set of Airfix Series 2 Aces of WWII, and I built the Major Tuck Hurricane. I love this series so much I bought 2 of each kit. There are a few Aces not in the series, like Richard Bong's P38 lighting, the White Lily of Stalingrad, and Lee Archer's P51 Mustang, but I have found them in 1/72 scale to finish the series!!!

Yes I agree. I was thinking about some possibilities perhaps around WW 2 Italian camouflage aircraft or how to brush paint a difference on silver, aluminium modulation on maybe F86 Sabres or F80 Shooting Stars, F84 Thunder Jets or CF100 Jets perhaps. Something to think about as a starting point I guess. In addition, maybe look at how to fix photo etch parts. Although, for a new modeller that could be considered a little more in the future.

The red fabric patches covering the gun ports were also an easy visual clue that the guns had been fired. On very rare occasions pilots claimed they had when they hadn't. The fabric patches didn't lie.

Re washing parts.. Matt do you find, regardless of the presence of release agent, that paint adheres better to parts that have been washed? It just occurred to me that washing parts may also provide a better key for paint layers.

handling plastic with your hands can make them a little greasy, so yeah washing them in general can be a good idea - but I don't always bother

(That was my whole allowance, shops were a Saturday morning thing, and I got into lingering at motorcycle shops, and spending the money on fried food instead😆). Something that's just occurred to me about marking panels lines, gun ports etc.. what about a used match? Briefly light the match, extinguish it and then use the stiff charcoal end to mark the lines / ports. Gives you more control on where it goes. Alternately scrape the charcoal into a beaker and use that as the colour after adding the liquid.

I just thought of a bullet hole suggestion.. a hot pin to melt the plastic.. maybe a short line of holes to replicate a strafing? Combined with the chipping you've done I think that would look good :) Bigger holes with the pin pushed further in and/or wiggled could be cannon hits?

Re painting figures. Broadly speaking the same approach as yours, just worded differently :) Lower layers first - next to the skin - then above them.Then if there is any overspill it's easier to manage.. IMHO it's easier to work out than in. Also I agree. Brown doesn't make sense and I'd associate more with Luftwaffe bomber crew (tan anyway) not RAF fighter crew. I do recall one story of an RAF pilot who flew in his pyjamas, so I suppose the only really important colours are the equipment like the helmet / mask / boots / jacket / maewest.

What starter set did the skin tone come from? I get these for Xmas from my wee nephew every year good he thinks about my hobby there not built yet unfortunately, I'm more Armour modeller but have been dabbling in the aircraft recently, just mixing things up having wee changes. Got the new Eduard hind can't buy zveda lol won't do it again and the names not on any of the hind in box so wasn't from them and all the goodies in Box resin and 3D printed parts and lovely info detailing book! Looking forward to this build! The Trumpeter Dauntless and H2000 Spitfire 1.32 stunning and went and got academy's 1.35 AH 60 DAP Black hawk there's a couple more 1.35 hobby boss kits in the stash the storch and IL2, oh and airfix stukka that's a good build part from canopy needed replacing and gun sight but looking into border model's stukka see what they do! I'm sure the refilling caps I think they are wrong shape under wing's! they were ment to fix them wether they have or just left them a circle and not bending out to the shape of the wing will have to be seen when comes to UK! It's ready for release so wee shall see! Airfix new 1.24 spits nice but there's a really nice BF109 from that company who do the full interior horten 229nhas just been announced so that's on back order to come in the shop!

I can't wholeheartedly remember which set it came from - probably not a starter set but more so a "gift set" - maybe the Older Airfix 1/24 spitfire Vb, i have one in the stash and it did come with paints but i had taken them out to be used some time ago

You're gifted at modelling aircraft in one piece of course, but what about a battle damaged fighter, say one coming into land? Many years ago I tried to do one with the undercarriage only partly down - kits tend to have Up or Down but nothing in between. You would do a much better job than I did, maybe cotton wool wisps from the engine / exhausts with coolant leaking for instance or a little red on the injured pilot. Like your other challenges, perhaps a Damage Challenge? :)

@@ModelMinutes On the same lines, if you know where damage is likely to occur could you use a silver undercoat so it looks like the metal after the paint has chipped off? I had a more complicated idea ref engine fires.. perhaps a small core of red/orange cotton wool with an outer layer of grey wool and a third layer of darker to represent a central fire and layers of smoke from it? (Yes I do tend to have ideas and then let those with the skills work out how the heck to do it :) )

Ok.. after MM's reply I went back and re-watched a part of it and realised he went from talking varnish to the matt paint job which is were I got confused. So just ignore below or read the whole post if you like 😜 Hate to say this, but Satin is not a Matt finish, the clear varnish said Satin on the lid but you called it Matt. Truth is that Satin is a level between Matt and Gloss, I dealt with powder coating products and we usually got things powder coated in satin as matt was took underwhelming and gloss was too overwhelming. Love the program by the way, good job keep up the good work.

I know the difference between satin and matt and explain it a few times in the video- if you could add a time stamp for the part that you are referring to it could help answer any confusion that may have occured. I have reviewed the video and found a few places where I show the matt paint but at no point can I see where I confuse the 2 finishes

Thank you very much for your inspiring video's. Like you I like brushpainting my models and I'm progressing steadily to bigger and more complex models. My painting is getting better with each model. But sometimes my varnishing lets me down and I'm thinking about using spraycans. Airbrush is not an option for me. Would you recommend using spraycans instead of brush and what brand would you recommend? Thank you.

I tend to use spray cans on occasion but usually only cheap off-brand ones. It's not often that I buy specific model kit spray cans. Whilst cans are helpful to cover large areas and get a good finish, things will still need to be painted by hand so they are methods which compliment each other rather than replace

Nothing fancy here. Plain old brush painting on a plastic model. The way it was meant to be. If you are looking for air brush sprays and canopy masks, look elsewhere. This guy is old fashioned and passionate.

IIRC there were more British aircraft accidentally shot down by the Americans in the Pacific as they mistook RAF roundels for Japanese rising suns. I //think// the RAF used slightly different symbols in the Pacific as a result.

It's also aatter of language style. If for insta ce you wrre making a modern fighter jet, would you say '"ejection chairs"? Sounds a bit odd. Or if you were going to book a flight for you and a partner, would you ask the person behind the desk . . .Can I book to chairs for the next flight? They'll know what you mean but . . . .You used the word 'fuselage' but you didn't call it the passenger compartment.

apologies, as mentioned in previous replies the audio mixing wasn't quite right on this one - i've improved since this one was done. Generally though, it would seem that the majority of viewers prefer some sort of background music with their videos rather than just ambient sounds of the recording

It's a pity this video has music throughout it. I'll never understand why modelers think we want to listen to rubbish quality music for the duration of their video. If I want to listen to music, I'll put on my own CDs.
