Great video, thanks for taking the time to share your expertise with us. Quick question for you, can you brush on acrylic varnishes over acrylic paint or do you have to use enamel varnishes?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 жыл бұрын
You can use either - at least I do anyway. I tend to use an enamel varnish on top of acrylic paint to protect it if i'm going to do an acrylic wash

Going to get another 2 Hurricanes this week for a diorama I have in mind. Now, obviously they will all have the same markings. I need some advice as to where is the best place (supplier) to find alternative markings (decals) so I could have KW-Z as the standard one in the kit and also I could have KW-R, KW-E, etc. with different tail numbers, as well as Squadron KW- markings, in my diorama. Any advice/help much appreciated.

I know Xtradecal make aftermarket products, but if you just want letters I know you can buy 1/72 scale RAF identification codes/letters on their own - would be worth a search on the internet
@ModelMinutes

Maybe something like this? You would have to check the correct colour of the letters, but this would be pretty close in my opinion www.hannants.co.uk/product/CA72090

I'm sure you'll do a great job! If you want to stick with the airfix kits, the P40 (Tomahawk) kit is pretty easy, the spitfire and the BF109 is pretty good too. The 109 will give you a bit of a challenge with painting, as it's different to the other ones
@ahman324
@ahman324 5 жыл бұрын
Thank you! I finished it except for weathering. It looks good I think, I'm satisfied, it was great fun :D I'm sure I could do better next time, especially with painting, maybe using different, softer brush (I had only the stuff from the set) and I think I need to invest in those decal solutions as they could look better too.

When i brushed on the humbrol enamel 49 matt varnish i keep getting these white spots on my model. Do you know how to get rid of the white spots?
@ModelMinutes

Sounds like it may have needed thinning or mixing a bit better - I had that problem with the acrylic version (which i found adding a touch of satin varnish to helped get rid of the white spots)

Stephen Jones thanks! I couldn’t say what the differences between new and older paints, but I feel that the formula has definitely changed over the years. I’m primarily using acrylic on this model, so perhaps that’s what it is. Extra layers of paint could help if it looks a bit thin

nice well done could you recommend any non-toxic glue as a substatute for poly-cement thanks
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 3 жыл бұрын
I don't think you'll find any. Polycement is designed to literally melt the polystyrene together, it's quite an aggressive product due to this. You could try other glues (PVA might work - but would severely impact the strength of the bond between the parts and also the drying time)
@julianmhall
@julianmhall 2 жыл бұрын
Thoughts: Re camouflage. Might it be an idea to draw it onto the model with a soft pencil, and then follow the lines you're happiest with? Even light coloured paint being opaque should cover the pencil marks. Re decal placement - could you use the other end of the brush as it's rounded? Even a newbie will have a brush. Lovely model btw :) Do you find starter sets to be better moulded to encourage people to buy more models?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 2 жыл бұрын
good idea! I'm not sure that starter sets are always better, especially given the quality of some i've seen in the past

Great video! Can I ask, do you know if you can add an acrylic wash after adding the matt cote? I have some acrylic Matt cote in my storage and really wanted to bring out the panel lines. I wondered if I could get the same effect by using this rather than the enamel to seal it? Liked and subbed!
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yes, you can add the wash after a matt coat - but you might find it a little more difficult to remove. Satin or gloss helps by creating a smoother surface which causes the wash to "run" into the recessed details. The matt finish is not so smooth and the wash will not behave it quite the same way, but it is possible
@user-gw3sq8im2x
@user-gw3sq8im2x 4 жыл бұрын
Ah yes I wondered, thanks a lot. I may buy a gloss cote go go over my model first and then use a Matt cote to take the shine down a little. I'm still a novice, but did you use anything to thin the gloss cote when adding it? Or did you add it straight from the bottle? - I've noticed they can be quite thick. Thanks for the info!

You say that it was ok to use an acrylic wash as you had already sealed the surface with an enamel varnish. What would have happened if you hadn't?
@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 4 жыл бұрын
Kevin M in order to remove the acrylic wash, I would use acrylic thinners. If all the previous layers of paint were acrylic too, they would also be removed. The enamel layer acts as a protective barrier

@ModelMinutes
@ModelMinutes 6 жыл бұрын
The Steaming Bean using the leftover parts of the model - the Sprue or spur (amongst other names) to make the rigging or wires for the aircraft. They are gently heated over a flame, then as the plastic softens the ends are pulled away from each other, stretching them into a long thin wire like part. I have a video about this process coming out soon! Subscribe so you don't miss it 😊
