I'm 70 now . Somebody, probably mum and dad, gave me this kit when I was 11. I was interested in military history and this was appropriate. Loved Airfix , especially the 20mm soldiers. Eighth Army v the Africa Corps were my favourite. Not sure how the Sunderland fitted in. None the less I built it. For me it was a giant kit. My mates loved it. For some reason I painted it forest green. Likely because it was the only paint I had left over from painting trees on my Triang model train layout. Happy days. Great memories. Thanks

Very nice molding for 1959. And amazing box art! Now you've got a choice between this one...and the new Italeri kit. The Airfix kit has all the rivets...which look fine to me. I love this kit. I have one in my stash, which is probably number five or six. It was the kit, which, if you were at school in the early 1970's, and had one, all the other kids would want to see it, and would often offer ridiculous amounts of stuff to swap for it. Extra kudos would be attained by ensuring all the moving parts moved, and on this kit, the retracting nose turret was the trickiest (as a nine year old kid) to make so it worked. The real thing retracted so a crewmember could get out and tie the plane to a mooring buoy. Duxford air museum have a Sunderland on static display, and it's huge. It has a galley, and a workshop inside. A real shame that none still fly.

I just bought one of these old Airfix Sunderland kits on Ebay and am starting the build. It's a surprisingly good model for a kit molded in 1959! I really like the very fine rivet detail, which actually looks better, in my opinion, than the overly deep engraved panel lines on the much newer Italeri kits. got say you keep impressing harry your videos are a joy to watch. Hoping to pick your brain for some advice I am planning to do an out of the box review of the french battleship/battlecruiser Strasbourg however i keep getting nervous and feel like it turn out really bad. How did you overcome such fears when you first started doing such videos sir.
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
Just Go for it! Be yourself and be honest. You don’t need to show your face at first, if that is confronting for you. I did neck down shots for the first 6 months, worried my old face and baggy eyes would look bad on camera. I’d been on Television reading news, in interviews and adverts plus the Stage with live theatre for many years back when I was much younger, and much prettier. However I knew what I wanted to say and simply let the camera roll. One take, no edits, uploaded from iPad. Remember you are talking to someone. So just pretend it is a conversation from you to them. The more genuine and friendly you come across the better, and quite frankly just having a chat is far easier than writing a script then trying to read it.

Cheers,Vintage Airfix ...nostalgia or childhood trauma revisited?Now if Zoukei did a \48....
@HarryHoudiniModels Жыл бұрын
I never had any trauma with Airfix in the 60’s and 70’s… it was a joy to build their models… I know the later 80’s 90’s period was pretty awful when a US consortium took over, cost cut and but fucked the product, which is why so many Tamiya builders bag Airfix. But in its heyday, 60 years ago, Airfix was at the top of the game, and we loved everyone of their kits.

@@HarryHoudiniModels It was a 'clickbait' question.Im 57 and was wooed from the joy of \56,\76 interesting catalogue of British army vehicles to \35 tamiya figures.My reason for building at moment is to help concentrate over effects of very strong pain meds,so im drawn to complex builds.Made rear grill's and mesh's on rear deck of T34 from brass and copper wire,and built 'travel locking' chain for Panther out of 54 tiny links(bicycle chain style 5-4-5-4...)Do'nt know whose madder?Rochm for including it in PE set,or me for building it?There are a few subjects out there i would love to see RFM create some moulds of.All last dozen armour kits outclass everyone else on detail/scale.Cheers for reply,better go to the only other relatable modeller on YT and say hello.....Nigel.

I used to send a self addressed and stamped envelope to Airfix with the missing part note back in the 60’s. They would send you the part back free of charge. Now they charge postage down under, so hardly worth it.
