If you are looking for hard numbers on the .357 Texan then you came to the right place.
Tyler shot everything he could find through this Texan and came up with a few of the best pojectiles for this exciting new caliber. Based on what he found we would say an entire world of hunting opportunities has just opened up to you!

34" barrel. Nice. Great accuracy. Need to tune the dial for accuracy. 2" group at 50. Maybe the slugs needs more yards to get stable. That's how some powder gun's work sometime

Any chance of a .22 calibre being tested in the near future with Mr. Hollowpoint 43 grainers or .22 Piledriver pellets both with excellent BC's at distance. Was also inmressed with the Ataman video. would love to see accuracy test with .177 calibre in that rifle. The Ruskies really seemed to put some proper research into that brand. Kudo's to them. Hey Tyler, I've been talking with a few ppl about the Texan .357 seems like AirForce has too fast of a twist rate in the bbl 1:16.25 better suited for the longer and heavier AMMO. Give us airgunners a bit to play with her and soon enough we will get the best AMMO for her. Great gun with plenty of power. I will be talking with Edwin with Airguns of Tx and see if his Tophat and restricter will work on the Texan .357 Great info you gave us. Thnx Brother Man

Why do you think the accuracy is not all that great with this gun? I mean, lets face it, those are not really great groups for 45 yards. Could the accuracy be suffering due to the fact that the weapons barrel is so long, which generates more speed and power but the projectile is being affected by the recoil of the weapon as it is in the barrel for far too long.

The JSB's were not very good for me. I have heard from a few customers that they shoot well in their .357 Texan's, but in the one I reviewed, it did far better with heavier ammo. I would have liked to get some slugs in the 175-200 grain range to try in this.

Because it's a very big round. Lot's of factors that are math based. Moves point of impact. You have to tune the airgun to the projectile. Or find ammo that the gun likes

Here's the thing about the Texan. It's actually quite accurate. The rub is two things: 1.) Main thing is, this is a 34" barrel. With rounds traveling at 6-900FPS, that means just a little movement in your hold can certainly cause fliers at 50-150+ yards. You need to hold it still enough for the round to travel that long distance at slow speed without altering it's orginal path in the process. 2.) Variations in pressure as you shoot multiple rounds on a charge. This is the lesser evil, but still a factor and combined with the above can make accuracy more challenging.

@Tofazfou
@Tofazfou 7 жыл бұрын
Whats up Tyler? Not that its your fault but man, the accuracy is sub par for only 45 yards. Airforce is one of my fav style of airguns but i'm afraid they missed the mark with the twist rate therefore accuracy on this gun. I hope the 308 is much better and that Airforce doesn't choose something like a 10" twist. AIRFORCE: 1 in 14"-16" twist rates are pretty fast for a 357 cal airgun. Roundball accuracy falls off once you get UNDER 1-20" twist in MOST BIG BORES and perform even better with slower twist. Once you get into the TEENS twist rate like 14" or 16" or 18" twist, RB accuracy suffers. With this level of power, a 1-26" twist would have been much better suited. But if you guys made the guns SPECIFICALLY for 190 gr 357 ammo (word on the street), then, i guess you've done well in that regards. But you sure limit your consumers. As Tyler said to someone else down below in the comments, you guys should really pay more attention to the forum guys and don't be afraid to give us credit for what we have done with these guns over the years. There is a happy medium between, SAFETY, ACCURACY and POWER and its easily achieved Just my .02

I'm with you 100% Tof. I only wish we had more ammo options to try in the gun. Sadly, right now we are a little behind in that regard. But we are looking into those options, hopefully close to 200 grains. I agree the accuracy was not that great with any of the slugs we tested, but I can really only fault the lack of selection we have at this point. My point in the video is that in spite of the lack luster groups, they'd still get the job done on most medium and large game at or under the 45 yard mark. But I (like you) would definitely be stretching it's legs further...and none of the slugs we tested would be suitable. Looking back at it, If I could have summed up the video in one statement, it would have been: "The Texan is a great platform, but for my money, I'd be sticking with the .45"

Try some swagged hollow base bullets. These are the standard for low power .38 Special revolver target shooting. The air pressure, while high for an air gun, may not be enough to seal the solid bullet base to the barrel.
@tasmedic
@tasmedic 7 жыл бұрын
Great review and thanks for that. Thumbs up! But.. I don't like the design. Having to plant your cheek on the bottle really prevents good cheek weld and the other side effect of this being an "in-line plumbing kit" is that the scope has to be too far above the bore to make aiming easy. Having the scope so high also increases the potential for cant error. Might be better with the bottle under the fore-end. Then it would be possible to fit a better stock, and mount the scope lower. I'm not sure how airforce managed to reduce the accuracy of the lothar walther barrel to 3" at 45 yards. That was quite an accomplishment. The overall impression is a piece of plumbing with a metal plate screwed into the bottle to put your shoulder against. Ugly. But yes, it is powerful. I think I'd probably look at something like a sako or CZ powder burner if I was thinking of shooting deer or coyotes. Much more accurate, lighter, shorter. Would look better to, to my mind.

The gun (and barrel) really NEEDS heavier ammo. 145 grain just ins't enough. A 190 grain slug or larger would be a better option. I wouldn't blame this one on LW in this case. Pyramyd just doesn't have that heavier ammo selection right this minute, but I would be willing to bet that we will see some more option there soon.
@tasmedic
@tasmedic 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks for that. However, heavier ammo will mean droopier ballistics. It might be better to ask LW to make a barrel with a different rate of twist. I wonder if a smooth twist barrel might work?

I see the .308 Texan is still not available, Hunter supply makes a lot of Ammo in .308. If PA wants to promote the other Texan gun’s I would suggest trying Ammo that you guys don't have, and find a good grouping round. Most people are going to be turned off when they see bad groups @ 45 yards. I know you want to promote your products only but I know you want to sell guns also….

I have the Texan in .45 (purchased from Pyramid last year!) and I found Air Venturi ammo to be unacceptable in the gun. Using 266 and 350 grain bullets yielded 6" groups at 100yds no matter how much tuning I did to the rifle. This was the case in the 4 boxes (EACH!!) of 265 grain and 350 grain ammo I tried. The diameters simply aren't consistent and the bullet surface has lots of weird voids. Micing the 350 bullets showed variances of over .002 inch. In some cases the bullets were out of round by this much. Switching to Hunter's Supply 360gr semi wad cutter ammo yielded much better results. I was regularly hitting 2 1/2 groups at 100yds using an ATN 5x20 X-Sight 2. I'm currently shooting Mr Hollowpoint 330gr, 360gr and the big 415gr hollowpoint boat tails. These rounds are performing just as consistently as the Hunter's Supply and performs better shooting game. I have settings marked on the spring adjustment for each of these rounds. Short version. The accuracy (or lack of) isn't the fault of the gun. Use quality ammo and the Texan will hit what you shoot at.

The .45 version typically does much better with slugs in the 300+ grain range. At least of the slugs Pyramyd carries, the 350 grain always performed very well for me. Quite frankly, I would opt for the .45 over the .357 any day of the week.

Air Force absolutly refuses to take advice on proper barrel twist for the cal. in bullets. My Air Force based Custom .257 Dot At 100 from Doug Nobel and R&L Airguns will print a 5 shot group, well under an inch at 100 yards! Why, oh why won't airforce listen and use a proper barrel designed fro bullets, rather than trying to shoot actual bullets thru a barrel with rifling suited to pellets I will Never understand! They have thru arrogance, have put down anyone building big bores from their frames. Now that they are doing it, they refuse to learn from what we have tested and learned thru hard work. They have been given all the info, but ignore it. All they seem to care about it having a high muzzle velocity for 1 shot in able to brag about it in advertizing rather than producing a product with accuracy and good shot count. Have they learned nothing from the way Serious Airgunners have turned their backs on Gammo due their same misguided antics? Gamo has become the laughing stock of serious Air gunner the world over. the only real customers Gamo has left are the Big Box Stores..I hope Air Force opens their eyes before they are branded with the same "badge of Dishonor"! It is a platform that has almost unlimited possibilities. It should not be the tuners, and we the customers that have to properly finish these guns with barrels, hammers, springs and valves that operate properly for the caliber! KnifeMaker
