His nose dive landing reminded me of when I was in Japan and got to try a actual 747 flight simulator the ones that move. They set it to start on the approach but by the time it all loaded I had already overshot the glide slope so I did the did nose dive thing. The Instructor was screaming WTH! I made the landing and when they opened the hatch all he said was "I can't believe you did that, you Red lined all the stress gage markers you should have ripped the wings off but somehow didn't. You actually landed it, Everyone survived but they are all going to the Hospital for physiologically distressed and will never fly again."

Retired 53WRS Hurricane Hunter weather officer back on freq. At around 8:45 you mentioned a 20 degree crab angle, 80kt cross winds and called them "crazy". As one of our most senior pilots used to say, "That ain't nothin'!" Standard storm penetration speed for a WC-130 is 180kts. In big cat 5s at 10,000ft. we have seen winds coming from our sides at roughly that speed. So inbound as we penetrated the eyewall the pilots were cranking in the crab angle till it got to about 45 degrees left crab, then in the space of a minute or two almost all of it would be backed off as we got into the eye and the winds died off. Then after crossing the center we'd slam into the far side eyewall and the winds would go from 20-30kts back to 180kts in that same minute or two, as the pilots cranked the crab angle back in to 45 degrees _right_ crab. And the winds were far from steady - lots of gusts. I've seen our pilots cycling the throttles from flight idle to full power in just a few seconds, as they worked to keep the plane above stall speed and below a speed that would put the wings at risk. Flying big storms can be a real E-ticket ride (for those of you too young to get the reference, check wikipedia)!

This reminded me of when I was on a flight inbound to Billings, MT. For those who don't know, the area is notorious for high winds, and my flight was on one of the worst. As I learned afterwards from checking my weather app, the wind was damn near perpendicular to the runway. My single biggest memory wasn't the turbulence or the sharp tilting during approach, it was when I looked out my window and saw us on approach to the runway. My window. My window on the SIDE of the plane. I saw the runway coming towards us. I swear I wouldn't have been surpised if I hjeard eurobeat start playing through the PA system, yet that guy pulled off a three point landing like it was an average tuesday. One day I will find that pilot and buy him a beer.

One word of advice-during takeoff, leave auto throttle on, (trust ap to do its job at 3500ish feet), have elevator halfway down on takeoff roll before 100 knots (neutral after) and say “positive rate of climb”. Also, flaps retract with the 2 dotted lines on the speed tape, you can set baro to say “std” and srt thrust to climb when the PFD says “thr climb” and you also don’t need to manually set speed (unless needed)

Back near 40 years ago during my parents honeymoon they were flying into Tampa during a hurricane 🌀 and were barely able to land. This past year has hit Tampa so hard. Flying from pie to Indiana in a private jet during this was possibly the most horrific takeoff I've ever performed with a 50 knot crosswind and tailwind all the way to atl. However my most horrific flight was landing with no brakes in a small town grass and hoping to god that it stopped before we ran smack into a business that no longer existed but the building sure did. Between that and skydiving over Tampa bay down to Clearwater beach was probably the most amazing yet horrific experiences of my life
