Airgun Hunting: two pigs with the Hatsan BullBoss .25 caliber air rifle

In this video Jim Chapman takes the Hatsan BullBoss air rifle in .25 caliber, to see how it will perform against feral hogs in central Texas. After finding a number of pigs at a deer feeder, one is singled out and dropped with a headshot. The pig scatter, but come back almost immediately to feed. When a firearm is discharged the pigs scatter and don’t come back. But the report of an air rifle, while not completely silent, doesn’t seem to spook them the same way. I had to shift shooting positions to get under a tree limb, but within 5 minutes the second pig is dropped right next to the first.
These pigs are small, but I was focusing on small boars with a small bore, proving to myself this is a viable approach. My thought is that if you stick to the following rules: head shots only, pigs under 100 lb’s, and a range inside of 60 yards, it is effective…… so long as you can place your pellet exactly on target or a brain shot. Transgress any one of these rules and all bets are off!
I also recommend only using a pcp powered gun in .22, .25, .or .30: these rifles are much more powerful and shoot much more accurately than spring piston rifles.

The Hatsan Bullboss is my facourite gun too, but I stopped using the H&N Barracuda's (the standard model), because it causes the gun to jam. The pellets are slightly longer then the other pellet models. As the magazine rotates the rotating mechanism will push the pellets slightly forward in the magazine, the nose will come out at the front and then the nose of the pellet will hinder the magazine from rotating.

I have a Hatsan Striker 6.35 mm / .25 cal. I know the bullet is big but didn't think it can take down a hog. Mine is a break barrel though...

Amazing! Airgun Depot had them for sale for $433 on Halloween! Hatsan is by far the best bang for your buck! Got mine in .25 for only $500 a month ago. It's is so difficult to pass deals like that up. Only if they could work on their weight.

Hatsan is not so much producing airguns for target shooting/competition it seems, but rather for the intention of hunting. Without the regulator you get less shots but extraordinary energy output. Seems Ideal for hunting. Look at their 25's for example, you get 50+ ft lbs

California would be the closest, but they don't allow airguns yet. The USDA map shows small populations in the extreme SW, SE, and NW corners of Utah .... probably small regional populations.

Deciding on the right caliber airgun to purchase is more difficult than I thought. Then you have to decide on which ammunition to use in terms of what’s best for target shooting or hunting ammunition. I am looking at purchasing the AEA SF series 25 caliber 13 inch barrel. Mostly going to use it for target practice/marksmanship but occasionally I would like to use it for hunting medium size animals like hogs for example. What’s your opinion? And what do you think the furthest distance is that you would have to be in order not to just wound the animal but kill it?

I also own the wooden bull boss. 25 call. So I can also attest to the power and accuracy of it. I can hit a cherry tomato at 100 yards no problem with the recommended scope I bought also made buy hatsan. You get plenty of shots with a tank fill and is also a great gun to hand pump if you want. Clean barrel when you buy, zero and have a blast.

Great shots sir nice rifle. I own break barrels and i am thinking to upgrade on pcp my break barrels i modded them my self opening the port hole and changed seals so they have more power my gamo magnum gen 2 igt can kill a pig by headshot. yes , I would use a good accurate and powerful 22cal...there killing them with 22cal break barrel airguns..gamo extreme, n 2 different other gamo break barrel, it wasn't there magnum version. hatsan 125 sniper vortex, & benjiman npxl

I have the Hatsan flash pup .25, dead on accurate. Pig hunt next chance I get. great video......What are your thoughts on the Hatsan Blitz .30 cal for hunting deer.?

I'm a big fan of Hatsan in general, but not so much on the Blitz. It only achieves about 50 fpe in .30..... way under powered for deer. It's even marginal for what I'd want in a low powered suburban predator gun. Depending on where you live there might also be a legal issue, in Texas for instance a big bore needs a minimum of 215 fpe. There are much better options in the price range.

Good shooting Jim....I'm a little confused on shot placement,though... On a head shot, some guys say to go for the ear hole,some go behind the ear,and I've also heard to go half between the ear hole and the eyeball....which is best? And,can I rely on a 50 ft lbs gun to deliver on a frontal, between the eyes shot? I'm going in a couple of months, and I'm taking a big bore, but I'm also thinking about taking my Airforce Condor 25....I get over 1000 fps out of a 36 grn Eunjin,and well over 900 with Mr Hollowpoint's 50 grn hp.... Suggestions?

Hi Neal, dropping a pellet down the ear hole is probably the best aimpoint, but any of those you mentioned will work. With respect to frontal shots, I try not to use them unless I can shoot from above. The forehead has very thick bone cover, and at ground level the head slopes back. A shot from ground level can skim off the sloping forehead, and this can happen with a big bore as well.

Clayton D Teufel that samyang Sumatra 25cal is a beast no doubt..90fpe with those 50g cast pellets..904fps..airgun depot did a review on those cast 50g & that Sumatra was accurate with them just like it is with all the 25cal pellets...I'll shoot a deer with it ..head shot...

As a long time PCP Hunter I'm NEVER going to shoot a deer with a small bore air rifle because it isn't legal in ANY US state. I DO hunt deer with a legal .357 caliber air rifle which my state requires it to be.30 cal or above, slug must weigh 150 grains or better and kinetic energy of 215 or more. A pellet of .177, .22 or .25 isn't legal anywhere for 'game' animals, just feral and pests.

I've shot the Kral Puncher Breaker in . 25 kzbin.info/www/bejne/e6jMkJ6AZtyLpck and quite liked it. I've never had issues with either, but from what I've been told by others the Hatsan may be a bit more robust. My feeling about the Bullboss, and Hatsan guns in general, is that other than tending to be on the heavier side they are a great value for money. More importantly is that they tend to be accurate, powerful, and built like a tank.

I just received my new BT Carnivore .357 today, and get this. Factory Direct, and it's the Discontinued side lever model. The air stick isn't Gold either, but rather painted BLACK, and makes it look so much CHEAPER!!! There's also some kind of large round bolt mechanism that needs to be put inside of it, but the instructions don't say a word about it. Mof, it doesn't say anything at all about this model. I just wrote Hatsan, and let them know that I am aware of what 'Bait & Switch' is, and they're either going to satisfy a first time customer in a reasonable fashion, or, I want a full refund, and they pay the shipping. I also let them know that I'm well aware about doing something like this over State lines. I don't know what they're going to do, but I know I want my Gold tube, and a bolt action rifle.

Those shots were between 45-50 yards. Stay inside of that, stick to head shots, and pass on any really big hogs and you'll be good.

I doubt it, the best that can be hoped for is to keep the number down to less than pestilential proportions. They seem to spread their range every few years.

When their numbers get below a certain density they "hyper-breed" and make an extra litter and larger litters every year. The number I read is that to keep populations the same or less, you have to kill 70% of them per year. Shooting (from the ground) is inefficient. They are mostly controlled with bait trapping whole groups at a time.

Randy Perkins They're nice. I wanted a versatile air rifle so I got the sumatra .25 cause I hunt anything from squirrels to hogs. Plus I like it cause it has a power dial and it's one of if not the most powerful small bore air rifle on the market. Mine produces 97-108 ft lbs without any mods yet. Plus I can use slugs(airgun bullets if you don't know)

@@kiddg447 right now I'm just hunting with the h&n baracuda Hunter Extreme which are working very well on game. Brothers in air did some testing with slugs in his flashpup and they was very accurate so I might give them a try on medium sized game. Happy hunting.

Mine won't group anything I try. Different pellets or slugs. At 10m it won't even group better than 1.5 inches. At 25 yes the thing flings them all over the place.

I think I'd have the gun looked at, call the shop you bought it from and see what they are willing to do to get you sorted out. That is not what that gun should be doing.

The big ones get processed in chorizo or other sausage, middle ones also take ham and bacon, the little ones are luau pigs. I give a lot away because I shoot a lot of pigs. The really big ones tend to get dumped

Air Gunner Elite I’m a huge air gun fanatic with my marauder .25 and Sam yang .45 being the most powerful. But my new love is my Marlin bolt XT .22. Fires Remington short gold .22 at 70 ish ft lbs and very quiet. Way more economical than the high powered air rifles.

50 ft lb is 50% Less power than a .22 short and 100% Less power than a standard .22 and 125% Less power than a high velocity 22 round. Yes it is a strong air rifle but It is still an air rifle bud.

salt flow Yes, 22lr is about 120ft-lbs and .22 subsonic is around 80ft-lbs. If you shoot a small bore in the ear, all you need is 30 ft lbs.
