So Maxor actually said it pretty well but I feel I should elaborate also because it's fun The moon presence is a old God who wants to keep other gods from being born probably wanting to be the only God or something to that effect. However the moon presence is trapped inside the Hunter's dream and cannot leave which is why it can't kill the other gods itself so instead it needs mortals to do its will. Thus the hunters, basically the lamps and the reason you're pretty much immortal like All souls games is the moon presence is keeping you alive, in exchange for you going out and killing these gods the moon presence grants immortality to the hunters ensuring no matter how many times they die they can always come back to fight again because no matter how powerful you are you can't beat an enemy who can always come back, you might kill him a thousand times but one day sooner or later they're going to figure out how to beat it it's just a matter of time. Which is why in the true ending where you consume the umbilical cords the moon presence comes down to fight you because you are the verge of being born a new God and so it comes down to fight you in order to keep you from ascending, once you kill the moon presence and absorb its blood the transformation is complete and you become a new God

about the smallpox in blankets, that was the american colonist with northamerican tribes way later than cristobal colon in the 19th century, colon was indeed a dick, even the catholic monarchs imprisioned him because he enslaved 1600 indigenous people from el salvador, when Isabel (catholic queen ) specifically said that indigenous people were supposed to be treated with respect... but about the blankets, in Spain in the 1500 they didn't know how smallpox was transmitted so... yeah, even later in the 1600 parents still used small metal figurines that were put in a belt around babies to protect them from illness
