n 1990, the Indian government airlifted over 1,70,000 Indians from Kuwait with help of 488 flights in just 59 days. Air India entered into Guinness Book of World Records for the civil airline that had evacuated the most people till date. Recently (2014) INDIA successfully evacuated 4000 people (including Americans, British, Canadian, French, Italian, etc) from Yemen and interesting thing is 26 countries want Indian Government to help them to evacuate their citizens. I got to know about this airlift evacuation much earlier than the movie got released. It was the world's largest airlift ever conducted by any country for the evacuation of their citizens living in another country.

It's called Airlift because the Indian Air Force did not have the capacity to airlift 1.7 million people within a matter of days, so they collaborated with a commercial airlines called Air India, and they aided in the evacuation process. It was one of the first times, perhaps the only time but don't quote me on that, a commercial airlines, with commercial pilots, were involved in a rescue operation, that too in a war zone. Thus the well earned Nationalistic pride, the government went against all odds to get every single one of them out from there, and this was of course in the pre-social media era so you can imagine how scattered the communication must have been. You should try and watch the film, it's on netflix, if i'm not mistaken and I assure you you'll have better subtitles there. P.S- it's not just based on a true event, its based on an actual person who made all those sacrifices in real life, though I mean it is a film so i'm sure its been tweaked around a bit, but the larger narrative is pretty precise.

SPOILER ALERT..!! Oh yeah they airlifted them.. each one of them.. Indian Air Force and Air India together did it.. largest airlift in the history of humankind during a war. Not very long ago, India airlifted again during Syrian war and India Airlifted citizens of Europe, UK and USA as these countries didn't have the tactical advantage to land planes there or lacked expertise to carry out such event. However the scale of the recent airlift was not as big as the previous one (trailer's airlift)

it was like we can't airlift them with only IAF transport plane so they i don't remember exact no. but around 400 Indian Airline 737 aircrafts were volunteered to enter unarmed civilian aircraft into war zone with no electronic warfare ,no radar with IAF MIG and first time a civilian airline enter war zone to recuse, i have to tell you it was a suicidal move but better then doing nothing.

This is the story of the 63 day evacuation of Indian nationals from Kuwait after Saddam Hussain attacked and annexed it. Indian Airlines entered the Guinness Book as the most evacuations by a civil airlines. The number of people evacuated was around 176000 and not 1.7 million as mentioned in the movie. Still it is no mean feat. 176000 people evacuated in 63 days calculates to around 2790 people every day.

The thing is that Air India a commercial airliner under the government was used to evacuate all those people but a lot Indians hate Air India.
