Thank you, for the update. I appreciate it. I want to add a few points from my previous comment about your other video. I’ve heard from airline recruiters during my career day with the airlines. While a degree is not required, having one can make you more competitive. If you’re viewers considering college, aim for a degree in a STEM field. Personally, I have a degree in drone operations with minors in flight operations and aviation management. This allows me to fly drones commercially, and if my pilot career in military or airline doesn’t work out, I’ll stick with drones. There’s a projected shortage of drone pilots in the next 40 years due to increasing autonomy. So, if your viewers going to college, choose a field that’s in demand. Consider starting at a junior or community college to save costs before transferring to a public or private university.
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
This is very solid advice that I second. Thank you for adding this! How did you find drone work? I have my commercial drone license and I’d love to do some work on the side but don’t really know how to start

The massive hiring wave is over. Boeing and airbus are not going to “fix” their supply chain and manufacturing issues. It’ll be improved gradually over time. It ain’t going to turn on like a switch to double or triple capacity out of nowhere. For anyone that’s banking future deliveries for future hiring will be sorely disappointed. Delivery rates will improve but it won’t be at a high rate. Hiring will continue to replace retirement attrition but future deliveries will be for gradual growth in line with gradual gdp growth expectations. That means lower annual hiring numbers. The pilot supply will fill back up in the regional airline sector and a lot of that domestic supply growth will be fulfilled by regionals rather than mainline. For future maineline pilot applicants, the hiring requirements will come back to traditional standards… 4 year degree, 1000 hrs 121 pic time bare minimum, with check airman and 3,000 hrs pic preferred. Hiring Bonuses and DEC will go away soon as well.

Thanks for the great content / update! Not sure if the "friend" you were referring to that got the CJO from SkyWest is Trent Dyrsmid from "Flying with Trent" podcast but he posted a couple of shorts in the last 2-3 weeks that he'd interviewed and received a CJO from SkyWest which had been one of is long term goals. However it seems he's been oddly quiet about whether or not he's accepted the offer? It may be that he's just been busy w/ other things like winding down his CFI business if he's going to be off to a regional job? HOWEVER, I suspect that he may be trying to work out if it's worth it to sign on to SkyWest's new *poison pill* training contract which from what I've read in short locks new pilots in to a minimum five year hitch OR $80k "training cost reimbursement" if you leave before the five year period! For those of us that are a bit older ( like 50+ and just starting out on this journey as a second career ) and would still be staring down mandatory retirement at 65, staying at a regional for 5 years versus ~2-3 before moving to a major, is a significant time and financial decision.
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
The contract is an interesting problem. From what I’ve heard you don’t have to sign it but they give you preferential class if you do? I don’t really understand that do you have better info on that part?

Good info, good channel. Another story/perspective: Military Aviator (tactical helicopters) flying for a Part 135 and was furloughed a few months ago. Company went under. No Regional would hire me because I’m at 3k hours and close to Minimums for Majors. I went back to instructing overseas in military helos and will continue until retirement because it’s a guarantee. Hard to find a guarantee in this business. Full disclosure I wanted Delta. I live in Atlanta. I got my ATP there and was told to apply. My class was all military and several helicopter guys. The head of hiring came in. He was retired military helo and we asked about minimums. He said we were military, got our ATP there and would go to the top of the list. We all asked and were very specific. A few months went by, I queried some buddies and they reached out. He said I didn’t get hired because I didn’t have 500 ME Turbine. He didn’t mention this in the brief and we asked him. All of us turned down other job offers because he said we qualified. I’m not mad I just think we did what we were told and it still did t work out. Currently Delta will take you (military for sure) if you haven’t taken your ATP checkride. They will give it to you in training. I fully understand the nature of the business but I dipped in to savings due to the “first year pay” at my 135 job. Would be the same for 121. First year pay sucks. Part 135 was good for me although I only got 300 hrs ME turbine before they went under. The pay is increasing and the passengers are always happy. You don’t have to deal with TSA or random searches even though you are KCM. I would encourage people to divide themselves into 1 of 4 categories: young, old, rich (ish) or poor. That will help you make the right call. I’m going to go ahead and retire from the Guard and have that safety net before I make the next move. TP
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
Wow thank you so much for sharing your experience. I did ATP CTP at Delta and they told our class that’s a guaranteed interview but based off what you’re saying that doesn’t seem to be the case. I think it’s good you have other options to pivot to. Do you plan on trying for any other major airlines? Atlanta is a good spot for it

I can’t believe people gave you a hard time about AA being the largest. They’re not profitable and have a a lot of overlap. Delta is profitable and barely smaller than American . United has largest international route structure, and also profitable. No point in being labeled the largest if you have a lot of fat to trim .
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
I believe delta is the most profitable right? I also was quoting flying magazine when I said delta was the largest so maybe that’s what they meant

Great content! Generally speaking, do part 135 passenger carriers furlough less often than 121 operations?
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
I don’t have data to refer to on that but I’d say probably. 135 jobs are generally less desirable so most pilots want to be at the airlines and the 135 jobs are usually the fall back

Folks, get your 4 year bachelors degree, don’t get it in anything aviation related. Always have a back up plan like Kaity mentioned. Don’t get me wrong, flying is a great career, and I’m very fortunate to be where I am today, in the part 121 area of the field……but it could end tomorrow, literally. We’re starting to see the slowdown. The bubble has a leak in it, and will soon deflate. Not to be a negative Nancy, but that’s the reality, the industry is very cyclical and you need to make yourself as marketable as possible.

Atlas isn’t parking planes….at least until spring of next year. Flying 737s for Amazon just wasn’t as profitable as they had hoped compared to flying 767s. So they are going to focus their business model on their wide body planes. I drove them to their plane every morning. Sun Country will have the new contract for Amazon.

I see hiring slowing down and reversing in some cases. I think the pilot shortage is over. I would expect to see employers want a college degree and competition will get tougher. I would have a 4 year degree and 2,000 hours before you talk to employers.

@@747FoSophieyeah, she covered this in part one i think but basically, alot of old pilots going bye bye, and too many young CFIS coming in, we need captains for those FO’s. But, the fact of the matter is Boeing has gotten the whole hiring in a chokehold in general, and the pratt and whitney problem doesn’t help. That would be a case of both CAPTAIN and FO AND cabin crew not needed because… well… no airplanes to fly lol

@@747FoSophie there’s no need to stress lol, there will always be pilot jobs. Problem is you have people that have no business in aviation coming into the profession for money, and disappointed when they don’t get the grand 300k a year captain job a week after earning their CFI… like shit don’t work like that lol, this profession is for people like me who love this, and quite frankly, as long as I’m getting paid enough to be able to live comfortably (apartment, gas, etc. the occasional night outs.) I’m happy, and that’s what it really should be, then in the meantime you build your hours and you find yourself there earning 300k a year maybe 10 years from now, but that’s not what this should be about. As someone who's kicking around "Career 2.0" at 43 w/ a couple Associate degrees, I struggle to understand the 4 yr. degree requirements. That just feels like lazy H.R. moves to filter people out who didn't 'Drink the Kool-Aid and go to the Big School' for 10x the price, and no more return on investment. Or, they don't feel bad when the cuts come; ya got that degree to fall back on! As much as I'd love to fly professionally, the flight training is expensive enough, let alone going back for another degree that I won't use in my (hopeful) future job.
@pilotkaity4 ай бұрын
It gives an overall picture of the person and if they can follow through with commitment etc. Delta for example does prefer people who have degrees from well known or highly technical universities. It makes sense honestly. Someone with a BS from Georgia Tech of MIT does have a certain aptitude and track record of success

These new millionaires will want the freedom of movement. No better freedom then flying private. iykyk
