I wrote a bachelor thesis on this. Basically you can "pay" with time instead of money, being subject to ridiculous itineraries and times instead of effective, point to point travel as fast as possible. People don't see this as unfair because they normalised it, but it is. If meat or apples were priced the same way there would be an uproar

Finnair is clearly looking up to SAS. And here in Copenhagen even the budget flights are expensive with Norwegian, but you can find a ticket for a direct flight to LA at around $400, or cheaper if it's a one stop. I also usually fly via Sweden, which is just across the bridge, there's already good deals from Malmø and Gothenburg too. Still 180 euro for a round trip seems unbelievably cheap.

I'm from Christchurch, New Zealand (a few hours drive from Queenstown) and $700+ AUD is insane... if you book at the correct time, you're able to book return tickets to many Australian cities departing Christchurch for $400 these days. You'd need to source a bus ticket (or drive yourself) to/from Queenstown/Christchurch but that's no more that $80 AUD. Ps. We don't have trains between these cities due to the mountainous environment surrounding Queenstown.

Aussie here $700 is crazy high But it is the fastest and most convenient way to travel. A boat is better, but way slower And Sydney to Perth doesnt take 2 days. Cairns to Brisbane takes 3 days, and that is roughly half the distance. Sydney to Perth takes a week by car easy

Ok so, in Australia we have something called AFL, and last year a Western Australia team got into the grand final of this game, and since the game was being held over in Melbourne, the fans in Perth who wanted to see it would have to fly to Melbourne, you’d think this isn’t a problem.. BUT because of high demand all the flights were raised to INSANE prices! I saw on the news that some tickets were going for $3500 AUD (2800 USD, £1900, €2200)! So some fans from Perth legitimately decided to drive from Perth to Melbourne, and oh boy I wouldn’t wanna be apart of that drive. thats the problem with US airlines...i can fly out of my home city to london for $1,000, if i drive 4hrs to chicago i can fly for $800, but the cost of parking, fuel/train costs (and $45 for tolls), and/or hotel costs are so astronomical that most of us just pay the extra money because it's going to cost the same and there is more hassle to use another city that might be cheaper.

Queenstown is like, tourist capital, small airport, not many flights, in the mountains. Very, very rare to get cheap flights. Maybe if you go during a quieter period? Flexibility is always key to cheaper pricing. Norwegian are doing New York (opera at Princeton in the summer, darling) for 1/3 the other airlines' fares, but I feel a little wary given their most recent profit report. The chaining is sometimes quite nice actually. I used this "trick" recently when visiting Hong Kong. The trip essentially was from Norway via Finland to Hong Kong and back via Finland to Norway but I added a 1.5 day Bangkok stoptover between Finland and Hong Kong and it didn't cost me anything more. Worth it, as the price of the ticket was a bit hard to swallow otherwise even though the flight times were very good with short connection times in Helsinki, only one early morning wake-up and no late night arrivals (I like to have some comfort in traveling... early mornings are the worst). With the Bangkok stopover I think it was a pretty ok deal in the end.
