@HeadCannon194 жыл бұрын
It’s an interesting point you brought up how back in the day, bank notes were used as a representation of real gold in a bank, which eventually became the normal form of currency at a national level, and now credit card/debit card transactions are used as a representation of real money, so that could eventually become the standard form of currency rather than coins and bills, with US or China debit cards or even EU debit cards in the far enough future

That idea that everything started with barter economy is mostly considered a myth. Most likely we started with small family groups where everyone contributed what they could and received what they needed (basically communism actually) which is like most nuclear families still does. And once the groups was larger than a small family we probably started with informal credit; e.g. I help you today, you help me some time later; and then more formal credit where someone recorded how much you owe or someone owes you, and then pretty soon some form of money once the economy becomes so large it's hard to keep track of everyones credit. Bartering is so horribly inefficient that it's only really used between groups of people that doesn't really trust eachother and dont have a currency in common, and even then you'd pretty soon invent some sort of money by bartering for some commodity that is fairly easy to move and split up and doesn't spoil.

nope! the opposite is true, see Panic of 1873 Germany goes on the gold standard following its war 1870-1871 against France that paid reparations in gold to make that possible. Also silver was banned or demonetized as currency. Point is that a gold standard is deflationary since gold available is a relatively fixed amount and all other forms of payment become worthless since only gold will be accepted by merchants. Also those gold reparations to Germany were not forgotten and France demanded all of it and more paid back to them in 1919 when peace was sorta made after WWI

A single currency is a problem because a country cannot then print as money as it wants. Euro is the reason why Greece and Spain are having austerity problems. EU controls the currency and doesn't have the experience of being the lender of last resort. It learned that in 2008 and after. The US has had problems with currency and panics since 1792 and even now doesn't do a good job of preventing downturns because super rich billionaires and wall st control the currency to prevent inflation which erases their wealth. So the rest of us in the world get austerity because rich people everywhere think they lose if everyone else get money. That is untrue because of the multiplier effect which, makes everyone richer when money circulates instead of being hoarded by rich people. See videos by Professor Mark Blyth for more explanations. What I wrote makes sense to me since I studied Micro and Macro Economics so all of this maybe confusing to anyone else.

Isn’t the USD a global currency?
@niku41545 жыл бұрын
Kinda correct, kinda not. To Europeans for example, locally purchasing in USD doesn't make any sense. USD outside the US works kinda like gold, it holds value, it could be used, but it's a headache to actually get that value back. It's kinda like "What are we supposed to do with this USD? We need to change it back to the Euro to get the value it holds." So, while the USD isn't worthless, it's close to useless because the USD isn't generally accepted here. The biggest factor is that the interchange from the USD back to the here usable Euro is tro stressful. But, as showcased by the United Kingdom, these things could theoretically work. If you as a European go the UK, you could pay in Euros, but the locals need to change it back to Pounds for the majority of purchases. Yet, I personally think you "could" theoretically survive in the UK using only the Euro, still the Euro won't be accepted everywhere in the UK.
@RealFemale695 жыл бұрын
No, not sure why you would think that, if you mean because it's well used still no because then the GBP would have been considered the global currency for a while as it was the greatest currency

As long as nation-states still exist (which won't be forever assuming continuing exponential growth in technology goes on long enough) it won't happen. Any attempt will likely end poorly as long as the countries using it remain governed seperately. USD is closest thing to a universal currency because of it's use in global trade, it's convenient because it's such a large volume currency it's easy to get but it's also annoying for many countries, I don't see any other currency replacing it though. I doubt this will change in our lifetime, nation states will absolutely not stand for crypto replacing their currency so don't expect that to happen at least not entirely.

The $20 is called a Jackson, dub or double sawbuck The $10 is a sawbuck, a 10-spot, tenner, or Hamilton The $5 is a 5-spot or fiver (Despite picturing Lincoln, the president isn't used to refer to this bill because he is also on the 1 cent coin). The $2 is known as a Deuce, Tom or Double ace. The $1 bill is known as a single, buck, Washington or ace. Collectively, bills are called Dead Presidents (although Hamilton and Franklin weren't presidents), dough, scratch, cash, moolah, paper, cheddar, cheese or bread. $1,000 is known as a large, grand, kilo, G's, K, stack or (in all $100 bills) a band. $100,000 is known as a brick. A million dollars is a MM, a rock or a Mill.
