I wear it cross body at the airport, take it off and bury deep in personal item going through security. After going through security, I put it on like a waist pack and pull my loose-fitting dark-coloured tee or sweater down over it. Bag is now invisible but still accessible. It stays there until trip is over. I use it as a daily carry while traveling, though my passport and spare credit cards will usually be in an under-clothing security pouch. It keeps phone, card, cash safe while I carry a tote or backpack for jacket, water bottle, tissues, etc. I’ve owned many little anti-theft bags, but this one is hands down the best.

For chest bag I attach a small spring carabiner to bottom left corner with several rings, clip it to the same pants loop. Thief can cut strap but not run with bag. Also put meds in it. There are ways to not pay bag fees. I've flown for many years and rarely, if ever, pay for bag fees. 1) Fly an airline that doesn't charge for bags; yes, they exist. 2) Airline status or loyalty programs - some employers offer status as a perk for some airlines. Plus, if you fly often enough or earn status through credit cards, you can get free bags. 3) Airline credit cards - If you fly more than once a year on the same airline, the fee for the card more than covers the bag fees you'd pay. (Free bags are often a perk). Airline cards also help you earn the aforementioned airline status. 4) Buy a higher class of service 5) If the gate agent asks for volunteers to check bags, they will often waive fees. Learn to do some homework and become a more educated traveler. Use the system to your advantage.

This has worked out perfectly for me and I never put a bag in the overhead bin and it’s easier for me to board and deboard. I just brought home a lot of ceramic and glass from Mexico and I wrapped it in bubble wrap and put it in my checked bag and one special piece of glass art in my personal bag. How is this only just happening in the US? Airlines have been strict about carry-on baggage in Europe for decades, including one carry-on bag only (no personal item, unless you're travelling business class). Some carriers even have a stricter size limit than standard for carry-on items. When I was travelling a lot, I used a lightweight backpack within the dimensions for carry-on luggage. No wheels and telescopic handle means more weight for clothes etc. A backpack is better than a shoulder bag because it distributes the weight across both shoulders, so there's less possibility of back trouble (from personal experience). And if you're at the gate with a backpack and it looks within the allowed size and doesn't look overstuffed, it is less likely to get weighed.
@NoraDunn8 ай бұрын
Great points about the backpack Jerry! That said I do find it hard on the back to lug travel backpacks around on travel days. @@DoReMeaCulpa Do you think people would be doing it if the airlines charged the baggage fee as part of the ticket? Or do you think people would be doing it if baggage fees were reasonable? They're not, by the way. In many cases they are more than the ticket itself. For example, if a Ryanair flight that would cost €60 without luggage included (1 reasonably-sized carry-on that is adequate to store small clothing items, toiletries, etc. for a short trip to the sun + 1 small item purse/sling/shopping bag/pillow) now cost €100 but with the luggage included, and Ryanair were strict on the size and quantities of these bags, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? Or another example, if a Ryanair flight cost €60 without luggage fees but had an optional luggage fee of €10 for the aforementioned bag quantities/sizes, would people be complaining and trying to cheat the system? How many would risk it for €10 on a €60 flight? I know myself I would just pay the €10. But as I said, it's never just €10. From what I can tell, the reason for the frustration and adoption of 'cheating' and 'deception' is because airlines themselves are being 'deceptive' and are 'cheating' the customers. They advertise low fare airline tickets, but then squash you with needlessly difficult booking procedures and baggage limits. The whole process from these companies is a deliberate attempt to manipulate consumers. That's why consumers are rejecting it and finding loopholes, in my opinion. Not because they're selfish or dishonest but because they are being manipulated and won't stand for it. Change the system and the consumers might change with it.

@@angrygoldfish using Ryanair is a terrible example, you want the absolute cheapest flight but screech about them charging you extra 😅
@angrygoldfish8 ай бұрын
@@petek5523 That's exactly why I chose them. It's about consumer's perception, and that's the whole point of my comment. If a flier is paying €60 for the ticket and €10 for the baggage versus €30 for the ticket and €40 for the baggage, what consumer is not going to question the legitimacy of that and try to find a way around it by steadily increasing the size or quantities of their bags? It's common sense. The customer would pay the exact same amount, but in their mind it's completely reasonable and par for the course. The whole system is broken. It manipulates consumers into paying more than what they think is justifiable. But take away the ambiguity and the frustration of overpriced baggage fees while increasing the cost of the ticket to ensure airlines earn their wages, the issue might just disappear.

Always a terrific and pertinent video. If they want to streamline and speed up boarding, they could just board from the last rows forward. My problem is in my carry on I need to carry a computer, bunch of batteries. None of this stuff is supposed to go in checked in bags. I think without my Nikon ~5 lbs (2 kg), my carry on has been 32 lbs (14.5 kg). As I approach check in or the gate my main carry on is a roll top dry bag, so I roll it down really tight. I also make sure the way I sling it makes it look easy, so the assumption is it's not that heavy, and keep it behind me. I was almost dinged on a ferry because out of curiosity while waiting for my clerk to come back to the counter I weighed my carry on. Another clerk spotted it, scolded me... I started to explain/complain. She gave up, let the other guy decide. A ferry. In Vietnam I was dinged by a truly malevolent clerk. She made me take everything that couldn't be checked out of my blue roll top bag, put it in my light weight day bag. The now checked but empty blue bag weighed 2 kg contained a book, some paper, almost nothing. My bulging Montbell bag was still overweight but allowed. What I take away from your video for my batteries is: be polite, but firm, explain that all the weight is batteries and electronics which can't be checked... and promise I'll be quick, stow it anywhere on board the attendants want, and mention that I always help other passengers with their bags. (I'll pull out the Montbell bag which has what I might need during the flight and leave my bigger carryon in first class at the front of the plane. )

Last month I took a low cost airline, Zip Air, and they have the usual 7 kilo weight limit. However, last trip they weighed BOTH my carry-on and personal bag, then totaled it. The total of both bags was 10.5 kilos, and they forced me to check in my carry-on bag and charged an extra 6000 yen, or around $40.

I just got back from a trip to Italy and was asked to check in my carry-on on my way there and back, unfortunately on my way back my luggage stayed in London for 3 days after my return. Not to mention that there was an empty overhead right above my seat both times. Some others were allowed their carry-on and backpack. I was questioned about my pillow which was in its bag, and was told that it didn't count as a personal items until I said it was a pillow. I just think that if some are allowed to board with a carry-on why not the rest.

I was fine with using checked baggage until my bag got lost, since then I just use a carry-on sized backpack for all travel which is easy to convince them isn't checkable. Plus I have my laptop in there so that's my last ditch effort to avoid checking.

I flew with my mother 2 years ago. We paid little for Spirit Airline. The normal carry-on I used to travel now an inch taller than required. My mother carry a bag of knitting stuffs and her carry-on. We ended up have to pay extra $$ for the both carry-on. Later, we paid another $150 to extend our trip. When we rode the bus to the airport, we missed our flight. So we have to pay to get the return tickets. We also paid one extra for carry-on on the way home. That trip cost me original $350 to $2000 for 2 of us. I just came home from 2 month trip to China. On the way home, I was worry my luggage might be overweight. So I put on 4 heavier pants, 5 long shirts, and wrap the big jacket around my waist at the Check in gate. After got into the airplane, I took them off and put into my expandable carry-on bag, which I purchased from TEMU. I do wish we can ride bullet trains or subway like in China. You can carry as much as you can into the train and only take few second. The trains in China always earlier or on time and fast.

A few months ago on our way to Eastern Europe, United made my wife and I put our small sling bags into one of our personal bags because they said it counted as a third bag. BUT they didn't say anything about us carrying a bag from one of the restaurants or stores in the airport as a third bag.
@NoraDunn8 ай бұрын
Okay interesting. Because I've heard they're starting to crack down on those restaurant/store bags too. Perhaps they can tell if you've legitimately got food (or whatever) that you bought at the airport versus all your sock and undies ;-)

I heartily endorse the Scott evest model. Not only is it great for securely stowing many things like phone, AirPods, ereader,glasses,RFID passport area, it’s great to wear at your destination even in pickpocket crazy places like Venice and Barcelona. Additionally, you’ll have everything you need during the flight literally “on” you eliminating the need to dive for the underseat bag ( especially when you’re in a bulkhead seat). Security is easy, just take it off and put the whole thing zipped up tight in a bin.

@@NCJulaine Great questions! I personally like having a separate dedicated ultralight packable rain jacket. So ultimately I would suggest all 3 because they give you more flexibility in different situations and climates. In terms of prioritizing, the rain jacket would be most important and can be used in any climate. The down jacket only if you're going somewhere cool/cold, and in terms of ScottEVest, whatever clothing item you feel would most suit your style and needs! There's lots to choose from.

In the seventies, planes flew one third full. Frequently my parents would fly international booking the window and aisle seat and nobody ever booked the middle, leaving them all three seats to stretch out. I took plenty of flights lying across five seats and sleeping all the way from LA or the East Coast to London. And Charter flights from Stansted were a thing back then, long before RyanAir. Passengers were clean in the bathrooms back then no matter how drunk they got, and I never witnessed any altercations or belligerence. Maybe people got dressed up in First Class, but us slum dwellers back in Economy were just dressed like everybody else. Smoking was pretty smoky.

Super appreciated this video as I will be going to Aruba with some friends the 1st of June. My last travel 2 months ago on Southwest, they did insist that my fanny pack be put in another bag. Fortunately I had enough room in the center of my backpack so it fit fine and then I had my other carry-on. Yes, all airlines are starting to get very picky. Thank you for your videos and keep them coming. I love watching them and I send them to other friends that are traveling as well.❤

We deliberately bought a small wheeled bag that is smaller than that bin you're supposed to verify the size of a carry on in. I carry a reasonable sized tote/purse for my personal stuff, charging cords, and medications, that will fit under the seat, and my hubby uses a bag that they used to call a messenger bag for the laptop and his personal items. It also bugs me when people try to shove huge coats into the overhead, taking up the bag space, but winter travel makes it hard to go without one. If you try you can actually reduce the size of a puffy jacket by rolling it tightly. Worse are huge straw hats from summer vacationers, and Stetsons, because you KNOW someone is going to scream about them being crushed.
@NoraDunn8 ай бұрын
Ha ha - yes, the hat thing can be frustrating!

I'm always convinced that unless you're just flying with a backpack only, those "low cost / budget" airlines actually cost about the same as a major brand like United or Delta (if not more). The only people who really can score good deals are those who just have a backpack that sits under the seat (which is free on pretty much all airlines, budget or luxury).
@tonyriddle54918 ай бұрын
I live in Arkansas and I've flown to the east coast and the west coast on Allegiant Airlines direct many times for 2 or 3 hundred dollars round trip including seat selection and a carry on. On Delta, United or American minimum $300 + seat selection fees up to $600 including seat selection with at least one change of planes

Airline employee here. We crack down because the FAA fines airlines for not keeping passengers to their baggage policy. Each airline is different and the FAA holds us to it. It has to do with safety as it pertains to weight and balance. Each ticketed passenger is an assumed weight based on that airline’s policy. (Winter weights are heavier). Based on ticketed pax, the computer that is responsible for take off and landing creates the plan. If weights are off it can be bad news. So please stick to the sizes and please don’t sneak on more. It’s for everyone’s safety.
