I would like to say that I think you two gentlemen are wonderful ambassadors for Algeria. We Americans need to know that not all Muslim countries are the same. Unfortunately, our news media rarely talks about any country in Africa, Muslim or non-Muslim, unless something bad is happening there. I remember reading about the terrible massacres in the 1990s during the Algerian Civil War, but I don't know anything about what has happened since then. Please show us some videos about what Algeria is like today.

When microwave ovens were introduced they were called Radar Ranges
@silikon24 ай бұрын
Darn, I was going to say this. It’s because radars use microwave wavelengths. Radar was developed first and it was discovered that the same microwave radiation could heat food. It was a pretty weird choice to name a kitchen appliance after a military technology, but that’s what happened. Maybe because cooking with microwaves did and kind of does still look sort of magical.
@PeterOConnell-pq6io4 ай бұрын
"Radar Ranges" were just that, their cooking power was based on the microwave radiating cavity magneton device, literally the guts of a WW2-era centimeter band radar transmitter.

beach scene is a parody of the movie From Here To Eternity. the bar fight was not Michael Jackson but the Bee Gees and Saturday Night Fever Most of the actors were not considered comedians and that was part of the joke. Serious actors saying absurb dialogue in ridiculous situations. This movie relaunched the careers of several actors. Lelsie Neilsen (dr rumak) went on to star in a number of comedies including his most famous role Lt Frank Drebbin The Naked Gun series. Lloyd Bridges (the glue sniffing guy) starred in the Hot Shots movie and also in Janue Austen' Mafia (movie spoof of the godfather) the directors (three of them) ZAZ, Jim Abrams and David and Jerry Zucker. went on to make several spoof mocies. Top Secret! Hot Shots, The Naked Gun. Also the disco radio station, the call letters WZAZ, is a reference to the directors.

One of the original ideas in this movie is that for the older male roles (the pilot, the doctor, and the 2 men in the control tower), they hired actors who were known for playing dramatic roles. They were told to speak their lines seriously, no matter how absurd they were.

The thing about theses spoof movies from the 80-s and 90's, is that that contain alot of references to contemporary cultural things - such as commerciials on television and movies from the decades prior. those jokes were, at the time, well known to the audience, but some of the topic-humor has been lost due to times moving on.
@cocosisco37516 ай бұрын
To understand this movie, and what makes it so funny, is that it’s a parody of a series of extremely popular airplane-themed disaster movies at the time (starting with the movie ‘Airport’) They weren’t comedies but they all had the similar plot setups and characters, which made it easy to do a parody. The audience for this movie would have been very familiar with the similarities, which made it extra funny…

1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips. 2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for: Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy lt. uniform. Elaine's trombone at the bar sounds like a trumpet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window. Two Hari Krishnas actually fly out of the airport. There are raindrops gathered on a high speed airplane. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😋😈 5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.

It’s probably one of the most obscure references in the movie as well. I didn’t know what it was for a long time. Very time and region specific. Nobody ever gets that the jet plane engines are making propeller plane engine noises. And it's such a good gag! There's a lot of jokes most people today wouldn't get. The woman who kept thinking "Jim doesn't drink coffee at home" etc. was a take-off on a coffee commercial running at the time. You couldn't make a movie like this today. Everybody involved would get cancelled and never work again. This was before 'political correctness" and people weren't so uptight and looking to be offended. Jokes were just jokes and they were just supposed to be funny.
@cup_cuppy_cuppers58176 ай бұрын
A parody of a real Yuban Coffee commercial that was popular at the time - Lee Bryant plays the wife who thinks "Jim never has a second cup of coffee at home," in both the Commercial and this movie. In an interview with AV Club, Bryant recounted having auditioned for the role in Airplane! without ZAZ ever knowing that she was the same woman from the real commercial. It was never brought up by anyone. You can find the commercial here on KZbin, btw.

👍 My request is The movie " Vacation " with Chevy Chase. 😁
The best spoof movies were made in this era, the late 70's through the 80s. The Naked Gun series is also an amazing example of this. Dragnet was hilarious. The Batman Movie - the original with Adam West...... holy moly was that a funny movie. This movie has Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Naked Gun had OJ Simpson (you know, before the thing). They were a bit more wholesome too. I, personally, have no issues with dirty/risqué things in movies (if it makes sense), but for the past couple of decades, the spoof movies have just been unneccessarily crude and gross. I haven't been able to get past more than 10-15 minutes of one. Also, back in those days, they were only putting out 30-35 movies in a single year, now its hundreds a year plus all the high budget series and I think everything is just spread too thin. We used to have amazing original content and that made everything so special. Going to the movies was so fun and you'd see the same movie a few times (or in the case of Top Gun, like 100 times in theater). I also lived overseas for a few years on a military base and they really would cater to the kids on the weekends with matinee's. If there was nothing new and exciting to show, they'd show some older movies that they knew we always had fun watching, like Ice Pirates (available on youtube - completely absurd and amazing movie). And then in the evenings if nothing new was out, they would show classics like Gone with the Wind and all the Rodgers and Hammerstein musicals. Its kinda awesome living on an overseas base because of things like this. We were also in Panama, so the bats in the theater also entertained us. They especially flew around a lot at the night shows. I don't even think they ever tried to get rid of the bats because everyone got such a kick out of it.
