The subtle jokes are just as good as the obvious ones. When Dark Helmet slams into the wall after stopping from Ludicrous speed and says to take a 5 minute break, it's actually 5 minutes of runtime before he's onscreen again. The merchandising scene was in the film as Lucas gave Brooks the ability to make the film and use his effects studio as long as there was no merchandising. He also wasn't allowed to have Lonestar look like Han Solo, so Brooks made him look like Indiana Jones instead. The actor in the diner with the chest buster is the actor that had this in Alien, hence the "not again" line. Love this film and watching people discover it ❤

One of my all time favourite movies! Rick Moranis ended up costing Mel Brooks "a lot" of money, since the crew (including Brooks) couldn't help but laugh during his scenes, most notably when he first appears on screen and has breathing problems. George Lucas lended the services of his company ILM to shoot some scenes. The escape pod dropping out was actually a (once) deleted scene from A New Hope. He agreed to let Brooks make the movie on the condition that he couldn't make merchandise, hence the running gag throughout the movie. And he didn't want Lone Star to dress like Han, so Brooks chose to dress him like Indiana Jones. Rick Moranis improvised the entire scene where he plays with his dolls, he was sick and had a fever that day and still came up with one of the best scenes. The original title was Planet Moron. Brooks had a bad reaction to the Yogurt make up and got a bad rash around his eyes. The voice Dark Helmet has when his... dark helmet visor is down is inspired by David Prose, the physical actor for Darth Vader in the original trilogy, and how he sounded with the mask on set. You can find footage of it.

A fun fact...when Rick Moranis says 'why don't we take a five minute break', it's exactly 5 minutes in the film before we see the spaceballs again. In case you didn't realize, or know, the late Sir John Hurt was the guy who had the alien come out of him. He was the original actor from Alien as well. Some great little bit's a pieces about this film which makes it funnier when you know. Mel Brooks had to get permission from George Lucas who only agreed on the grounds that they sold no merchandise and that Lone Starr couldn't dress as Han Solo. So brooks filled the movie with fake merch and dressed Lone Starr like Indiana Jones instead. There's polystyrene cups everywhere cause cast and crew kept leaving them all over the set, so Brooks just wrote them into the film. And one of my favorite joke of the movie is the stunt double one. There are a lot of 4th wall breaking jokes in the movie (the spaceball cassette, the cameraman getting slashed by Darth Helmet, Yoghurt doing merchandising stuff because "it's where real money from the movie is made" but the stunt double one really made me lose it completely as it was completely unexpected. When they enter Yogurt's cave and are walking down the hall, it's a callback to *The Wizard of Oz* when Dorothy and her companions are going to confront the Wizard. John Hurt had no idea he was going to recreate his chest buster scene from Alien when Mel asked him to do a cameo but enjoyed going along with it. The song the Alien sings is actually from an old Looney Tunes cartoon where Michigan K. Frog sings and dances that number. The gag in the cartoon is the frog only performs for one man who thinks he can get rich with the frog but gets derided because the frog never performs in front of others.

I totally agree with you here on how delightfully stupid this one is because there are so many funny moments for me like "We Brake For Nobody", "Radar about to be jammed", "Ludicrous Speed", Dot Matrix's Virgin Alarm, and my personal favorites, Merchandising (where the REAL money from the movie is made) & combing the desert. Here's a mind-blowing fun fact: the actor who plays one of the Spaceballs who combs the desert with a giant Afro pick and says "We ain't found s**t!" is the same actor who played Principal Franklin on iCarly, Tim Russ. BTW, I loved how you turned the tables on the "If you can read this, you don't need glasses." joke, because you were wearing contacts. And I even got a good laugh out of Pizza the Hutt. I can still eat pizza while watching that scene. Also, if you were to watch the 4:3 Full Screen version of the movie, then the scene where they fast forward to the part where everything that's happening is happening now will align well with the TV that's playing the exact same scene in the movie. Mel Brooks was riding the back-to-back-to-back success of Blazing Saddles, Young Frankenstein, and the Elephant Man (which he produced without credit because he didn't want people to think it was a comedy, which it very much wasn't) when he was pondering what he should parody next. Afer a conversation with George Lucas, he asked if he could spoof Star Wars, Return of the Jedi having been released a couple years ago. Reportedly, Lucas said he would be fine with it, as long as there was no merchandise from the movie, which is where the Spaceballs merchandise jokes in the movie came from. Mel Brooks joked on the DVD commentary track of Spaceballs that if he thought he could have gotten away with it, he would have loved to have made the joke about how long the Spaceball-1 is extend through the whole 90 minute runtime. After President Skroob orders the crew of Spaceball 1 to "comb the desert," and they literally begin doing that, one of the pairs combing the desert is using a hair pick, a small comb-like hair accessory that was associated with the African American community at the time. The African American who declares "We ain't found shit!" was a young Tim Russ, who would later appear in the Star Trek franchise. As a favor to a producer on The Elephant Man, John Hurt, who had played the titular Elephant Man, John Merrick, reprized his role as Kane from Alien in the space diner scene. When the alien bursts out of his chest here, he says "Oh no. Not again!" in reference to his character's fate in Alien. My favorite joke in the movie, of which there are many, is the extended "Watching Spaceballs: The Motion Picture" sequence. It's just so surreal. My second favorite joke is "Because good is dumb!"

The chapter 11 bit in the beginning is also a bankruptcy reference. Chapter 11 bankruptcy is the type you most often hear about.

The look of abject horror on your face watching the “playing with dolls” scene was absolutely priceless.

I like the line I didn't see you playing with your dolls again. Ilove the again part. How many time has Dark Helmet been caught.

My favorite thing about this movie is that Lucas gave permission so long as Lonestar didn't dress like Han Solo. So Mel Brooks dressed him like Indiana Jones. There was also the thing about Lucas getting all of the merch money, hence there never being any official Spaceballs merch.

Thanks for the great reaction to a great movie, and bless you (for the sneeze) (and in general, I guess, too). Let's hope we all have a great week ahead of us

People who seriously claim this movie is stupid, are not going to win any high IQ awards. Thank you for a fun reaction.

The "Alien" scene features the same actor that played in the "Alien" film where the xenomorph burst out of his chest there too. That's why he says "not again!" Getting the actual actor, John Hurt, to spoof his own iconic scene from another sci-fi movie makes this one of the greatest parody scenes in cinema history. Anyone who was a kid when SpaceBalls came out probably saw an old Looney Tunes cartoon with a frog that sang and danced to the same song as the alien in this scene. I believe it's spoofing that. The scene where they go meet Yogurt is a parody of the "Wizard of Oz" scene where they meet the Wizard for the first time. There are also numerous Star Trek spoofs and of course the "Planet of the Apes," ending.

2:20 The Chapter 11 joke actually has to do with bankruptcy, not the number of Star Wars movies. Chapter 11 is basically a form of "re-organization" when a company or corporation has lost money to the point of not being able to pay off it's debts.

One of my favorite bits of trivia about this movie is that when they asked George Lucas for permission to parody Star Wars, they were told yes but with 2 conditions: first was that they couldn't do merchandise (thus the tongue-in-cheek gags about merch in the movie), and second was that they couldn't dress Lonestar up like Han Solo, so they dressed him up as Indiana Jones instead.

Oh also, the running gag of the Spaceballs always drinking coffee is because apparently the cast and crew kept leaving the cups around the set and they kept showing up in shots, so they just ran with it and started picking them up during scenes and stuff.

In the French dub, ludicrous speed is called "vitesse grotesque" and I think I like that more.
