There are some jokes that are specific to Los Angeles, especially LAX Airport. The white zone - red zone announcements are continuous there, and at the time this movie was made, these announcements were made by a real married couple. There used to be a lot of cults that would hang out in the airport and try to give people flyers or flowers for donations.

This was actually a parody of a film called Zero Hour! The filmmakers used to record commercials late at night to write parodies of commercials, when the late night movie Zero Hour! Got recorded, they found themselves parodying the entire film. Kareem’s character was a direct reference to a football player trying to break into acting playing one of the pilots in that film.

I saw this when it came out when I was 9. the movie is a spoof of some airplane disaster movies made in the 70's, they were called Airport, Airport 75, Airport 77 and Airport 79 the concorde. The couple doing the announcements apparently worked at LAX and were a couple in real life. The black men were speaking Jive which is a slang language created by jazz musicians in the late 1930's. The old lady was best known for played June Cleaver in the 1950's sitcom Leave it to beaver which was known for being a very wholesome show which is why its so funny to see her speaking jive. the African tribe was played by the Harlem Globetrotters which was a performance basketball team that used to add comedy into their shows. The definitely sold porn magazines like that back then, thinking that putting then on the highest shelf would deter kids, they also used to sell cigarettes in vending machines that were everywhere and adults would hand their kids some money and tell then to go get them a pack of cigarettes, Kareem Abdul Jabar was asked to do the movie and they offered him $25,000 but there was an oriental rug that he wanted to buy that was $35,000 so he told them he would do the movie for that amount and they agreed and he got his rug. the lady who was shocked that her husband asked for a second cup of coffee was inspired by a famous coffee commercial from the 70's where wives were always shocked that their men would ask for a second cup when they were at a friends house or a restaurant and it was because of this certain coffee, the questions that the pilot asked the boy about gladiators and Turkish prisons were references to the movies spartacus and midnight express and they both had homoerotic themes.

1. I guess I picked the wrong week to stop watching "first time reaction" Airplane clips. 2. This movie requires more than one watch in order to catch as much as possible. Little things to look for: Ted was in the Air Force but at the bar he's wearing a Navy Lt. Uniform. Elaine's trombone at the bar sounds like a trumpet. One of the fish was a freshwater catfish. A woman throws a baby into the air when the plane crashes through the window. Captain Kramer steps out of a mirror before leaving for the airport. The woman with the horse in bed is the creepy Captain Oveur's wife. She is also hitting on to Captain Kramer. Two Hari Krishnas actually leave the airport, by plane. It's a jet but the background noise is of a prop plane. The ambulance crashes after the plane lands. 3. Otto/Auto pilot has his own webpage on IMDB 4. Elaine has permission to sit on MY face.😍😋 5. IMVHO Airplane II is good too, destination moon.

Airplane! YES!! This is one of those hilarious movies that could not be made today. Because so many people would get seriously offended.

I guess it could be made today, but it probably wouldn’t be very good, since several of the cast members are no longer alive. I just don’t think they would be able to give as great of a performance now.

The Mayo Clinic is a world famous hospital in the US - even foreign leaders go there sometimes to be treated. So the spoof of something that prestigious with jars of mayo behind the “doctor” and the bouncing up sterilized heart etc is all part of the joke. There are jokes upon jokes here. The plane’s engine noise is from a propeller plane but it’s a jet. Ted says he was in the Air Force but is in a Navy uniform at the bar. All the locations in the war story are alcohols not places, etc. The actress who translated the jive talk was most famously the mom from “Leave it to Beaver,” the most lily-white milquetoast 1950s / 1960s wholesome television show ever - so seeing her speak jive is extra hilarious. Win just one for the Zipper is a play on one of Ronald Reagan’s most famous lines / famous lines when he was an actor and that he used as a politician. He played a Notre Dame football player, last name Gipp. In a stirring scene he tells his team to win one for the Gipper. When this film was released, Reagan was campaigning for President. Doc Rumack gives the win one for the Zipper speech and the Notre Dame fight song plays. Mr Rogers hosted a very very very popular educational children’s TV show for decades. He was at the height of his popularity at the time of this movie. Aside: the guy checking the radar range / “he’s all over the place what an a-hole!” is the actor who played Mike in Breaking Bad & Better Call Saul. The main actors in this had previously only done dramas so they were playing against type but also the filmmakers used that for humor by having them all (except Johnny) play it deadpan / straight.
@DanJackson19779 ай бұрын
Mr. Rogers - educational Kids tv show from the 60 thru the 90s, known for being gentle and kind. Tom Hanks played him in a movie and Colin Hanks played him on Drunk History. Hare Krishna were a common fixture at Los Angeles international airport, promoting their religion there (hence the "we gave at the office" joke).. but in 2010, the California Supreme Court kicked them out. The "never vomits at home" joke is a reference to a 70s series of coffee ads... starring the same woman playing the wife. The "I speak jive" lady is Barbara Billingsley... the mom on the most white-bread American sitcom ever, Leave It To Beaver... joke being, the whitest woman in the world is also the blackest woman in the world. James Hong, from Everything Everywhere All At Once plays the Japanese soldier commiting seppuku... this is just one of his hundreds of roles.
