I walk you through what it looks like to convert your airplane or fixed wing license to a helicopter license. I talk about the costs associated with both, what the conversion process is like and what it will cost you. Then I talk about what are the main differences you can expect.

This made me think of this old Facebook post I saw: Pilot Advice: • "Bravery is being the only one who knows you're afraid." • "You've never been lost until you've been lost at Mach 3." - Paul F. Crickmore (test pilot) • "The only time you have too much fuel is when you're on fire." • "Blue water Navy truism: There are more planes in the ocean than submarines in the sky." --From an old carrier sailor • "If the wings are traveling faster than the fuselage, it's probably a helicopter -- and therefore, unsafe." • "When one engine fails on a twin-engine airplane you always have enough power left to get you to the scene of the crash." • "What is the similarity between air traffic controllers and pilots? If a pilot screws up, the pilot dies; If ATC screws up, .... the pilot dies." • "Never trade luck for skill." • The three most common expressions (or famous last words) in aviation are: "Why is it doing that?", "Where are we?" and "Oh No!" • "Mankind has a perfect record in aviation; we've never left one up there!" • "Flashlights are tubular metal containers kept in a flight bag for the purpose of storing dead batteries." • "Flying the airplane is more important than radioing your plight to a person on the ground incapable of understanding or doing anything about it." • "Just remember, if you crash because of weather, your funeral will be held on a sunny day." • Advice given to RAF pilots during WWII: "When a prang (crash) seems inevitable, endeavor to strike the softest, cheapest object in the vicinity as slow and gently as possible." • "The Piper Cub is the safest airplane in the world; it can just barely kill you." - Attributed to Max Stanley (Northrop test pilot) • "Never fly in the same cockpit with someone braver than you." • "There is no reason to fly through a thunderstorm in peacetime." - Sign over squadron ops desk at Davis-Monthan AFB, AZ, • "If something hasn't broken on your helicopter, it's about to." • Basic Flying Rules: "Try to stay in the middle of the air. Do not go near the edges of it. The edges of the air can be recognized by the appearance of ground, buildings, sea, trees and interstellar space. It is much more difficult to fly there." • As the test pilot climbs out of the experimental aircraft - having torn off the wings and tail in the crash landing - the crash truck arrives, a rescuer sees a bloodied pilot and asks "What happened?". The pilot replies: "I don't know, I just got here myself!" - Attributed to Ray Crandell (Lockheed test pilot)

I went from Fixed (FAA Commercial Instruments multiengine), to Rotorcraft almost 15 years later...I thought overall it was easier to transition as having an understanding of radio comms, airspace and navigation, weather, and related electronic tools (iPad and instruments in the cockpit), etc. helped a lot. Clearly, hovering, while we don’t think much about it now, has been one of the hardest things for me to do and eventually try to “master”. As you mention, if during flight the helicopter feels very similar if not the same, as you slow down for landing, everything is different!! Great video. Thanks again Mischa.

It’s good to start with airplane in UNited states for the money reason like he was saying. It’s a lot cheaper to go airplane first then go to helicopter and plus yes it looks good on a resumé here! That’s what I’m currently doing right now!

What about if you only have a private airplane license, and want to go commercial helicopter? Do you need to have a commercial airplane license first or can I just hop right into commercial helicopter?
@brookscoffee7997
@brookscoffee7997 3 жыл бұрын
@@ruin4716 no you do not have to have commercial airplane. So if you’re wanting commercial helicopter you’re going to have to go through the steps just as you do in airplane. So you’re going to get your private helicopter then IFR rating for Helicopter then finally get your commercial helicopter!

A commercial fixed wing licence in Canada is absolutely NOT 108000$. The better schools in the country offer full PPL through commercial multi IFR for 64 grand.

Can you get most experienced fixed wing pilots to a commercial Heli level in 60hrs, I think it’s 100hrs here in NZ? it’s 150 normally for a CPL-H here.

Been watching alot of your videos and got into quite an argument with my buddy about clouds. So your flying from point A to point B and point B becomes covered in fog/clouds. Do you fly through them to your destination using instruments or do you turn around or land somewhere else until visibility improves? Say you are low on fuel and options are limited. I watched you with the hood and I would land in a parking lot rather than fly through clouds...watching your disorientation was eye opening to me.

Actually it is 200h for a commercial airplane. between 150-190 or 205H for integrated course. As for cost, it surely depends on what you do but the base price is usually below 70 000$.

In the US the transition to Private Rotor from Fixed Wing I think is only 20 hours of rotor flight time which is way too low. Realistically you will want more time.

Dear Mischa, at least with the simulator when I fly helicopter, I think and react in terms of helicopter and when in an Aeroplane, I think Aeroplane with its performance and controls. Does this translate to real life in your opinion? Also, I did grow up with that myth that it is better to fly fixed wind and than transfer over to rotary. It used to be $20k and $80k respectively - lol. God Bless Pete. P.S. I will get over to you one day even if I just pay $$$$ for the picnic/charter tour.

The physical coordination skill to fly a helicopter is significantly higher. I've seen some super high 20k hour ATP fixed wing guys never quite get it even though they somehow got their rotor ticket.
@paddy217125
@paddy217125 4 жыл бұрын
SkyCoreLLC probably because most 20,000hr+ fixed wing guys haven’t had to actually fly a plane for a long time and have very little in the way of stick and rudder skills. A fixed wing pilot who has recently finished their training would pick it up quicker as they’re still conditioned to learn and their hands and feet are probably at their peak still

The catch is... good luck getting any kind of job with a commercial helicopter license and only 60 something hours. You're not even legally allowed to instruct after getting your CFI, which will put you at still less than 100hrs TT in a helo. You will NOT get a job anywhere with those hours.

FYI I don’t push an aircrafts nose down on engine failure. I pull up and convert airspeed to altitude and then drop the nose just above glide speed to ‘fly’ down for a Forced Landing...just saying...
@yahelbouaziz3767
@yahelbouaziz3767 4 жыл бұрын
I don't know what kind of airplane you are flying, maybe race planes at Reno where you kind of expect your engine is going to fail like Ed Seguin ? But in the cessna and the DA40 I fly, during an engine failure, it takes 5 to 10 seconds from 120kts to the 85kts best glide speed 😱 That's way less than the real life reaction time and the "OMG is this really happening" factor. So that's why we are taught to push the nose down to counter act the nose up tendency of the airplane and look for best glide speed. Note that we are not taught to dive down, just to push on the yoke and then correct for speed. Especially during slow speed phases : Landing and TakeOff. Flightchop as a good video on this : kzbin.info/www/bejne/o5DXfIaeocuSnbc
@SaltedFishPilot
@SaltedFishPilot 4 жыл бұрын
Agree with Warren. Convert airspeed to altitude. I fly GA and that is what we do. The cruise speed (IAS) will always be higher (one hopes!!) than the best glide speed... hence pull up to slow to glide speed (eg cruising at 140kts, slowing to 75kts). In that one swift move, you will gain at least a couple of hundred feet or more... then you pitch and trim for the best glide while proceeding with the emergency checklist... I think you mean “stall” recovery in a fixed wing where speed is already bleeding off (eg 60kts and reducing) - that’s when you pitch (push) down to gain airspeed (and throttle up at the same time)... All good!!!
@tonysilverfox2828
@tonysilverfox2828 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, The only time you really lower the nose would be an Eng fail after takeoff, most other times your above the glide speed so can trade it for some height if you need or just trim back to the best glide speed

Flying a plane is a joke compared to a helicopter a plane can fly itself it is more just monitoring and making adjustments then actual flying. Flying a helicopter is super hands on and very difficult if Flying a helicopter is like riding a unicycle than Flying a plane is like riding a tricycle.
