Joshua, that's not a one way valve. It's a two way valve, you can check by turning it upside down like I did and the air purges just the same. So this vessel does not degas, or purge CO2 under pressure. It simply pushes out O2 from the canister, which works well. They do make a one way valve lid which has N2 sparging as well but it's unavailable I believe. This should be a standard option, perfect for coffee roasters. Very good product all the same.

thanks so much for that! I hadn't considered turning it upside! 😲

no these are not good. These are bad, the seal is very unreliable. Also for cannabis the resin will interfere with the rubber seal. These jars seem like a good idea, but in reality it is not good at all. weak design

Interesting that in your video for the Fellow Atmos you don't recommend storing ground coffee or flour in it because it may clog the vacuum seal - but then it's ok to store those things in the Airscape. Wouldn't that also be a concern here? Also, I have the medium Airscape and the diameter is so wide that I can't pick it up with one hand. Bummer. Also, the coffee grounds are always clinging to the underside of the inner lid, so I would get coffee all over the countertop if I were to set the lid down straight away. So I try to set it down _upside down_ ugh.... it's a whole thing ...every morning. 😑 Just some feedback.

If i often transferring coffee bean from airscape to another medium, would that makes remaining coffee bean in airscape oxidized faster eventho there's a one way valve to displace all air from airscape after used
@AlternativeBrewing Жыл бұрын
I does mean you'll be adding fresh air to the mix - and the Airscape is one of the better ones - that is great for keeping out air over long periods of time. MOst of these containers are recommended to keep a tight seal for no longer than 4 days. It extends the life of beans - by removing constant contact of fresh air between uses. So it is expected that you'll open the container daily to get your beans - but if you're not even doing it daily - that's great!
@Coffeeluver22Ай бұрын
When I just want to make sure. After roasting you keep the handle up or down for the gas to escape and do you keep the plastic lid off during the degas days?
@AlternativeBrewingАй бұрын
Degassing will occur slower if the coffee is kept in the seal of the container. That is the benefit. Leaving it open for a time frame will speed up the coffee aging. There's enough space inside the container even after you've pressed down as hard as you can for the gas to escape, and without causing harm. I would - after the beans are cool - place them in the container and test over a few days - when the beans start to peak. You should notice, if keeping the beans in there - that the peak will be extended - not necessarily the resting period.

@LorenzoNW Жыл бұрын
@@アントニオ-h6d If you're buying pre-ground coffee, you're buying stale coffee. Coffee quickly begins to oxidize after being ground. A bag with a one-way valve or an Airscape will slow down the process a little but if you were to do a comparison taste test between freshly ground and pre-ground beans, I think you'd be shocked at the difference. If you're making drip or French press coffee, I'd suggest getting a Baratza Encore grinder. Or if you can afford it, a Baratza Virtuoso+ is even better. It produces less fines resulting in a noticeably smoother, less bitter cup of coffee.

@AlternativeBrewing4 жыл бұрын
tbh I find it all depends on the volume you're planning to store. Fellow Atmos maximum is 450g of beans. The Airscape is 1kg. They both serve the function of removing air out and locking in the freshness though. I personally like the clear Glass Atmos - aesthetics mostly.

@@KaizenOz I recommend watching James Hoffmans review of coffee storage containers, where he covers the fellow atmos. In that he mentions the issue that you are facing, however notes that the indicator for the seal switching off is not due to the seal being broken, but rather from the co2 being released by the coffee beans inside the container. Which isn't a concern for changing the taste of the coffee.

@@return2earthvideochannel Spoken by someone who criticizes without actually trying. LOL I've owned an Airscape for years and it works great. My beans remain fresh for 3 weeks. Previously, I stored them in the coffee bags I bought them in and noticed the taste began to degrade after just 1 week. In fact, Seattle Coffee Gear did a comparison test between an Airscape and a battery powered vacuum canister and concluded there was no detectable difference in freshness after 3 weeks. I had the same concern that there's still air between the beans but for whatever reason, the beans don't oxidize like they do when left in a tightly sealed bag. And a vacuum canister doesn't truly create a vacuum either, given the beans off-gas. On top of that, and Airscape is far easier to use than a vacuum canister which requires vacuuming out the air after each use.

Thank you for the great video! I have heard that coffee beans are best 3-10 days after roasting. Supposedly, these additional resting days are necessary to allow carbon dioxide to off gas from the coffee to a satisfactory level. My question is this - Does the airscape prevent this off gassing process from happening? If so, should I leave my beans in an air permeable bag or container for the first 3-10 days then transition the beans into the airscape? Thank you in advance!
@AlternativeBrewing2 жыл бұрын
Hi Michael, it is my understanding the coffee beans will degass no matter what - unless the are in a complete vacuum - which the Airscape is not. There is still air gaps in between the beans, and this will allow the gas inside the beans to leech out and become part of the air inside the tin. This will increase the pressure under the lid, and slow the degassing down - especially with much less fresh air to oxidise the beans - but won't stop it all together. Hence why you're beans will remain fresh for longer.
