Earlier this year, I shipped several AirTags across the world. While my AirTags to Tim Cook and Elon Musk made it, the other two bound for North Korea didn’t. In this video, I’ll finally be sharing why that is, and will talk about how this lead to me uncovering some dirty business practices from DHL. It’s so bad, that I truly am convinced DHL are committing fraud.

I always have problem with DHL when I order something online or when my employer sends something to me. If it's lightweight, it's always marked that I wasn't at home (even though I'm at home all day). But when I order something heavy, like 60kg of cat's litter or something from abroad, it magically can be delivered on time. It's so frustrating that I can receive package from abroad faster than from my own country because of that

I stumbled on your last video on the airtags and dhl which led me to this video... I have nothing but horror stories with DHL. I will not use them anymore because of how bad they are. On MULTIPLE occasions I had packages sent to me and while I was working from home, sitting in the front room where I could see outside, and with two dogs that bark at any movement within 3 houses either side of us. None of the packages ever showed up by the time they said they would and the website tracker would suddenly update saying "Attempted Delivery, no response. Tag left on door, will retry" Each time I would look and no note on the door or anywhere around the front of the house. Dogs never barked, and when I checked the security cameras that look all the way down the street (I live in the house at the dead end of a culdasac).I couldnt find a single frame of a DHL truck on our street for the whole day. When I called DHLs local center they were always rude and dismissive and claimed that the driver attempted delivery and I wasnt home. I would have to wait another 2 days before I could come to the center to pick up my package. On the final call the manager even tried to call me a liar when I offered to show him the video showing their trucks never came down the road. The package was delivered the next day by another local carrier. Since that last failure in a string of bad service I have refused to deal with them ever again and always opt for other delivery options when they are listed as a choice.

I can confirm some of these nightmares. I've had the displasure of being forced to use DHL as a carrier for the fact that I wanted to buy something that was only sold in Germany, and *had* to be shipped through DHL. I've never had a delivery go to plan. first order took three months to be shipped, in which time, the company i ordered from sent a replacement (which arrived before the original), and my girlfriend had shipped me something from america, it went from where she lived, in the middle of america, to california, and thrown on a boat to go to the east coast whereupon it was "lost at sea". fuck DHL.

The main supplier for my former business switched to DHL at one point. As everything I sold was custom-made and all the supplies were custom manufactured for me by the supplier, I needed reliable shipping. DHL did not provide that. At least one out of five shipments was "delayed" - arriving well after the promised delivery date/time. One out of every 20 or so shipments never showed up. DHL would claim it had been misdelivered until I would point out that tracking showed no delivery anywhere. They’d then say it might be lost but that I should wait to see if it showed up. This went on for nearly a year until my supplier switched to FedEx. They also raised shipping rates, but it was worth it to actually get my shipments.

That’s bad on so many levels! Especially given they have sold both your belongings and your personal information. Not good! DHL recently contacted me about my investigation and agreed to answer some of my questions. One of which what relating to what happens to lost parcels. Their response was this: “Within our own network, such parcels are delivered to the recipient. If that is not possible, they are returned to sender. Should that be impossible as well (for instance if the address label is illegible) the parcel is taken to a special facility where it is held while further investigations are carried out.” So if your parcel was with a DHL partner in India, I guess it falls under their “lost parcels” policy.

Thank you for this project and for exposing DHL. Now I know why my parcels took forever to deliver and why the tracking was so off. It would say the parcel has left the facility or the parcel is in my state and will be delivered in a few days but it always took weeks to be actually delivered. Thanks to you now we know when it said the parcel was in my state it probably didn't even leave the other country or was still stuck at JFK or other major airports. I got 3-To 4 parcels from DHL the past 3-4 years and every time I had to contact DHL and took weeks to get a response which was nonsense in the end. Overall it was an amazing project and all 3 parts were really fun to watch. You just got a new subscriber.

@AveragePicker 2 жыл бұрын
Of course there is going to be a lot of lag at the facility. The package arrives, it sits to be sorted. Gets sorted and eventually scanned, their tracking updates, it sits. Gets moved to an area to be loaded, sorted again, scanned, updates its “left the facility” but really it’s with everything else ready to be loaded. Eventually it gets loaded and actually flies out. Basically, “left the facility,” is a best case scenario where its in a mail cart, at a “terminal” ready to depart but for whatever reason (likely volume) hasn’t yet…and that’s likely some logistics on how the plane is packed and items are prioritized to be loaded, plus factor in a bit of employees shuffling things, a cart gets pushed in front of another one, etc.

To my knowledge, packages that no one claims in China are usually openly auctioned/sold to people, either on the street by deliverers or online. This is a way to get rid of abundant stocks of non-claimed packages and make a little profit. people also get interesting stuff by paying very little amounts, since you can't tell the things inside from the package, usually they range from 10 RMB to 50rmb depending on the size. I personally never bought one because I live abroad, but I would very much like to try it when I return back to China one day.

yes, this happens all the time. They all do it. When I worked at Fedex Call Center, I would call the depots (as an MOD), and multiple times, the reps would admit they'll just mark it lost and check the box for refund approval. since most people do not insure the package for anything, it's less expensive to pay you $100 than to hire more employees. IF you are sending something priceless/ unique/ heirloom, there is a service for those called White Glove Service, or Custom Critical. It's not cheap, but it's hand to hand transportation, logs, everything. Need to move a killer whale? Customer critical. A priceless artifact? Customer critical. I wouldn’t be willing to pay those prices personally, but i think we’d all agree that we’d be willing to pay a little bit more for shipping if it meant more care and respect at facilities. I’ve worked at FedEx for a few years now in warehouses and I’ve seen the way they treat stuff, and the attitudes managers have towards them. And if something is broken, or gets lost or something, the numbers they deal with they just don’t care. It’s corrupt from the ground up. Ultimately the blame belongs on the owner of the building. A few years ago I ordered some 17 seasons of Midsomer Murders on DVD from Amazon, and DHL was handling the delivery. What arrived was a banged-up box with some energy drinks. I rejected it to the delivery guy himself, and told him that's not my package, even though it had my package's number. From then on I got Amazon to send it to me again, and left them to deal with DHL's incompetence.

First of all amazing video again. My mom actually works for a company which sells lot of repair parts for big machines. They send most of their parts via DHL. Here comes the interesting part: When they send certain power supplies or cables via DHL, 4/5 things get lost in the same DHL logistic center every time. They are all being marked as unlocatable. And these type of power supplies and cables are very rare to get at the moment.

When DHL was doing full service in the USA, our company used them for shipping regularly and regularly we’d have stuff that was being sent to Fort Wayne, Indiana get mis-shipped to South Dakota often for no reason and it was always a hassle to get it corrected. I used to work as a supervisor at one of DHL's competitors and I'd often get tasked with finding lost packages. I really enjoyed trying to piece together what happened and why, and ultimately working to recover the package if possible. Most of the people I worked around shared my enthusiasm for trying to solve these mysteries, but if enough core workers at DHL just don't have the motivation to do the right thing I could definitely see how packages can simply go missing and nobody wants to claim responsibility for finding them.

natural selection. it could be expected that economics maximize productivity by discouraging folks wandering from their assigned locations/duties and disrupting the intended flow of production. deviations and irregularities are time-costly to correct and would have fewer agents to attend to those isssues- it's competition forcing unsatisfactory outcomes for the few whilst maximizing the benefit for the greater. ie we get what we pay for - when alternative service providers are forced out of the market we are left having to accept whatever standard that remains, but the door is always open for pioneers.

In 2007, I was an Operations Manager for a small camera shop that did 50% of its business during Nov-Dec. we switched to DHL given the rate savings. It was a nightmare; out of a sample size of 35,000 packages, around 30% of them were lost. DHL was notorious for losing packages domestically at that time. I’m not sure if that’s the case today - or whether they do domestic first party shipping today.

The next week the next manager said "they always drop off here" at the station where we ship off packages. That's only half true because what they told us the day before was completely different. Have you ever considered that maybe you should send it to a different location. Domestic and international logistics companies work hand in hand with central and foreign intelligence, hence why it shouldn’t be a surprise that Dhl lied about your packages. It is most likely that some intelligence or security agency authorized the packages to not be delivered. Try sending a package to a country that is not heavily sanctioned and I will bet 100$ on the fact it will be delivered. Don’t try to send packages to heavily embargoed countries you parcel will be bound to be seized by fbi cia or a foreign intelligence agency. And I don’t blame them if someone where to send a parcel from the us to one of our aggressors I would expect no less for it to be seized regardless of contents until further investigation. That is how sanctions work. Nothing in or out without illicit authority, discretion, and supervision.
@theshevanel

@@credit__devin it seems you're missing the point entirely. Typically if a parcel is seized by customs, etc... you are notified of such an event, if for no other reason than a chance to appeal the seizure. What you've said doesn't, in any way, explain the actions and claims of DHL to have "lost" the parcel only to magically be able to locate it immediately if the customer refuses to accept a refund. That's not even mentioning them claiming to deliver to a place that, as stated by their local branch, isn't accepting inbound deliveries. Also, it's "$100" not "100$." The dollar sign always goes before the number.

Sorting and logistics facilities are supermassive and incredible complicated, I worked at a UPS with over 50 miles of conveyor belts layered in a pit three stories up. Plus Your packaged only gets scanned on the way in, then on the way out, and in between it’s just one of half a million packages sorted a day. When we lose your package it probably hasn’t been stolen or shipped somewhere it wasn’t supposed to, usually it’s lost because it’s sitting in a dark corner somewhere satan wouldn’t even go, wedged between some machinery waiting for something to break down so it can be found, or it has a tag thats missing or been damaged. Even with GPS coordinates we could never find much less identify your year old package. Disclaimer: Though I was employed by UPS I do not represent them in any way and these statements reflect my experience at one facility many years ago, but not any PR materials or training I received.

Love the video, and I'm eagerly awaiting another update. Some remarks: 1. Yes it is cheaper to just refund the customer because the standard liability of DHL in case of a lost shipment is minimal. They are not required to reimburse the total value of big-ticket items, except if you bought insurance for a declared value at a surcharge, in which case the insurance pays. 2. I believe it's the expensive DHL Express that actually ships to North Korea. You're not shipping using DHL Express but using the much cheaper DHL Packet, as evidenced by the references to "postage" in your screenshots (DHL Express has no such thing). It's also the cheaper DHL that generates the largest share of the horror stories, although DHL Express also has a few. 3. If the parcel is found after the shipper has been refunded, the contents are auctioned off or destroyed, depending on the estimated value.

I had some strange things like this happen but with UPS. I was moving house from UK to France about 1 month after brexit and sent 2 large-ish boxes to France. Both boxes ended up as 'missing' on the UPS website until I opened an investigation. One box ended up being sent about a week later and arrived to me another week later, with the 2nd box still nowhere to be seen. Anyway the 2nd box got reported as missing and I managed to get the compensation (the box contained a fricking gaming pc). But then mysteriously 1 week after I received my compensation, the box arrived in France. Still was missing on the UPS website and the stickers on the box showed it had been shipped from UK to Adidas in Germany for some reason, then to Reebok also in Germany (idk why, there was nothing sporty about the box lol), then back to UK. Then somehow it ended up in France at my flat. No idea how but hey, still got my compensation and the PC still works

The stations are huge warehouses and even though we might know where the package was last scanned, that doesn't mean we know exactly where the package is within that building. There's also no way of knowing if a package missed some scans and it could potentially no longer be in the building. Also, a package that small would be very hard to find and we don't have a team dedicated to searching for each and every package as it wouldn't be time/economically efficient. There are a lot of factors and while you have GPS tracking on your package with your air tag, the shipping company does not.

I've worked at DHL expres as a delivery driver and yep in the big distribution centers they will hardly ever look for a lost package. And yes they should but they are mostly way understaffed to reduce cost (HR does this) but that also means that they are never done working so they work 24/7 there and always have more work then they can finish. And for DHL it really is just cheaper to reimburse the package then actually look for it. I do not agree with what they are doing but seeing everything i saw and notice i do understand them from a business point of view. Luckily the smaller distribution centers like the one i worked at only work on weekdays from 6am to 11pm and have considerably less work. still understaffed but us delivery drivers spent the first hour to help speed up the process so we can leave quicker and take some load off of the warehouse staff. And then at moments where there is less to do for the warehouse staff someone can actually search the small area for undelivered packages to help the customers out. (Sometimes a supervisor or a delivery driver does the search if they have time). I do think that putting a cheap tracker on the package should be smart especially if you are a business since an ex colleague got fired for throwing packages out in a river on his break and stamping them as delivered cause he was to lazy to get out of his van. (I caught him doing this but i can't tell more about that matter cause i signed a confidentiality agreement.) Tldr: big distribution centers no looking and small distribution centers yes looking.

Back in the mid ‘90’s I worked for a large retail company that owned several different types of stores including some major shoe stores like Foot Locker. The company decided to save some money by switching shipping carriers from UPS to DHL. Many of the shipments that our stores received once switching to DHL had been opened. The new inventory that should have been in the boxes (for example, Nike, Adidas and Reebok shoes) were replaced with old, nasty used items. So DHL employees were stealing our inventory/merchandise and replacing it with the same type of item, but used so that the weight of the box would be the same. At least 60% of the shipments that were shipped through DHL had merchandise stolen by DHL employees over the 2-3 months that we were using them as our carrier.

My mom sent a Christmas package for my kids across Europe (between EU countries!) first week of November 2020. It never arrived. After 6 weeks we started to raise questions (shipping time with the slowest option is usually max. 2 weeks), and DHL bounced us around telling me "the sender needs to investigate in their country", and my mom "the recipient needs to investigate in their country"- effectively refusing to investigate at all. After opening a case with the consumer protection board in both countries (not sure if your country has a similar institution) the package suddenly arrived at our door. In the middle of July 2021! So, we got to explain to the kids that their Christmas presents from Grandma got lost by the post office. During a time we were not able to visit in person. Unless you are sending between businesses, it is never about the monetary value of the goods shipped.

Home in Stavanger/Norway, DHL rings my doorbell, leaves immediately, and sends me a text that I'm not home and need to pick up my package at my post office. I get the message when I see them drive out of my street. This is their normal way of delivering on the dor. It takes 8 hours longer than delivering directly to my postoffice like a more serious shipping company.

It got lost once and I was so fed up with the fact that it was stuck at the DHL office near me for a month that I finally went down to the office and picked it up myself. They couldn’t even find it at the place and it took 3 hours for them to find it when the box was huge because of what was inside! As someone who worked as 'handler' for one of the big internation shippment companies: most people in the comments have no idea how the shipping depos work (granted, I myself have only seen one). (so in a lot of detail specific to my experience) packages come, get thrown on a conveyor belt. Then you have cages next to the conveyor belt, with labels as to where they will be shipped. Humans walk by them, and put the packages from the conveyor belt into the appropriate cages next to it. Some packages may end up lying on the ground for various reasons, like waiting for customs. Generally, people are pretty responsible and try hard to get everything shipped properly. But if the guy who got hired yesterday picks your package and throws it into the wrong cage, that alone gives it a two-day detour. In some places in the depo, there are bunch of packages lying tjere for days. Usually waiting for something, but if a package get mixed in there, or everyone forgets what is the package waiting for, it will take weeks, if not years, before someone questions why it's (still) there (everyone has their conveyor belt to worry about, afterall). (here comes my speculation, I was never involved with these processes) Even big packages csn easily get 'lost' this way. The tracking system might then realize that [delivery company] had the package for weeks, conduct an 'investigation' which consists of checking how long ago was the parcel's barcode last scanned, if it is too long ago, and sends an automated email offering to refund a sender. If the sender refuses, or even throws a big fit like threatening to sue, the depo manager might take a trip along those packages sitting there for weeks, and try to find yours. That how a package, about which's location nobody genuinelly had any idea can be found the day after. I hope this lengthy essay maybe helped you understand the not-quite-but-brink-of chaos atmosphere, and why the delivery companies sometimes seem so gosh dang inefficient, when in reality they simply optimize for average delivery time without worrying about the gone-wrong cases.

Long time since this video was posted, got it in recommended now. I have worked in DHL parcel sorting facility and it was nightmare. Packages are mainly destroyed by workers there and nobody care about this. If your package is destroyed in facility, people just throw it into garbage bin and forget. Amount of times where employees just walk out of facility with random parcels is massive, all it takes is a friend in security who will turn his eyes on this.
