I don't wear any bee protection unless I've got to do something drastic, to be honest. Honeybees are domesticated; they've been bred for docility in addition to the other traits we want (cleanliness, production, temperature resistance, etc). Unless you do something to make the bees angry they generally don't sting, they just fly at your face and bop you as a warning. Gloves can be a particular problem because you wind up smashing bees without knowing it and they release alarm pheromone (that banana smell he mentioned) and then you can get in trouble pretty quickly.
