@@sucrow7659 A big part of the issue is that Turks during WW1 and the Greco-Turkish war carried out massacres of Greeks in Asia Minor which have been labelled as genocide. The whole ethnic cleansing of Asia Minor is still a very sore spot with Greek communities today (understandably so), so I can see why a lot of Greeks would react very strongly to the idea that St Nicks would be in any way shape or form Turkish. In the interest of full disclosure it should be noted that Greeks also committed massacres of Turkish people in Asia Minor during their invasion and subsequent retreat from Anatolia, so it wasn't exactly one sided either, but the killing of Greeks was part of the larger effort by the Ottoman Empire & subsequent Turkish National Movement to destroy "unreliable" minorities (which also includes the Armenian Genocide).

If so maybe a special strain? It is bugging me that a bouquet of roses is $500! Edit2: She picked the color. So they didn't have to be red. I'm gonna look for rose bouquets for $1000. ... Holy crap. Even the most expensive reasonably sized rose bouquets I could find on google were in the 300 range! Did he buy her a gigantic bouquet of 1000 roses, because that was pretty much the only thing I could find in that range! Other than the gold dipped roses, but those were way more that 1000. With no qualifications whatsoever. This guy is just lying. Here's how it works. The real networking in college consists majorly with your class mates. And that only pays dividends 10 years down the line, where they either washed out or are in solid jobs. Your professors? If the degree is difficult, most of them dont even want to learn your name, let alone talk to you on your future prospects. The easier courses? Oof, these responses... The simple truth is, if you want to be at the top, you either already have a headstart and basically bully your way in ("my dad is your boss, you better give me a great evaluation, bla bla") or you have to put in the effort, which is the reality for most people. Also most people don't want to do that just to get a better job. Know the people stuck in a dead-end position at Starbucks, who complain all day about how much their job sucks ? Well, are they applying somewhere else ? How about qualifications ? And yes, that includes making connections, and if you're not very social that can be hard. So, sure, it's difficult, while still trying to stay afloat, but some people do it and complaining about how everything is random chance and the odds are stacked against you because you don't know the right people is undermining the effort those people are putting in. It's annoying. Now i don't mean to say that they have no right to complain, but i don't have to listen to it and i think the OP in that case should just stay clear of talking to that girl, a roommate's friend no less, not even hers. The situation likely is that that friend is coming over frequently and it's bothering her and on the other side her roommate is bothered by her being an asshole to her friend. So by extension, she should get a new roommate or move out imo. I guess with that high-paying job that should be no problem :)
@goaway99773 жыл бұрын
Implying or straight up telling someone that there success is unearned is definitely asshole behaviour regardless of whether its true or not. We all have advantages and disadvantages we are born with whether they be personal attributes like intelligence and charisma or the benefit of having a well connected family or even just a stable two parent household. Why go around hyper focused on what you lack that others have and then try and tear someone down on that one specific thing? The roommates friend simply got what she was dishing out which is fair game if you're gonna be going around insulting people.
@spacemonkeyentertainment64133 жыл бұрын
@@goaway9977 Certainly a harsh way to look at it. I think the roommate's friend was just venting and looking for some sympathy, not asking for genuine advice or anything like that. I for example, like my workplace, my boss is great. But when someone starts talking about how much of an a-hole their boss is, it's not my first inclination to berate that person about how they should look for another job if their boss bothers them that much. So unless i already dislike that person (which i assume is/was the case in this one) i'd say something like "oh yeah, some people can be terrible" or "sounds horrible, good thing you can relax here for a bit" or whatever equivalent "i don't have anything to say about this, but don't want to appear unresponsive/unsympathetic"-line comes to mind. I'm just saying that if someone is constantly complaining, that can be annoying, especially when you're usually not inclined to care about that person's problems for whatever reason. So i'd bet the roommate and her friend were hogging the kitchen table when the OP wanted to use it or maybe OP just doesn't like having "a second roommate" and it's not about the complaining at all (or rather the complaining is the excuse given for wanting to kick her out) or whatever and it soured the whole relationship to the point where she'd rather not have that friend around and felt justified in "exploding". In the end imo it's not about whether connections matter or not, but about if telling a roommate's friend of in that way, because they bother you so much. I still think she's the a-hole, mostly because in that case i'd talk to the roommate about it, but who actually says things like "you know, your friend is here every day and complains every time and it really drags my mood down, could you stop ?" - Most people go the "can you please stfu already ? And stop eating my cookies that i bought for me and my roommate"-route, because they penned up all that anger.

That wasnt a misguided good deed. It was a flex and a hint. And the only plausible reason she was ok with it is that she loved the attention, want to keep him as an option for her future, and want it to continue. I'm not saying she wants to marry him. But expensive gifts without having to put out? Yeh, she's tottaly the asshole, and her friend\gifter slightly less because he knew he could get away with it. But still a massive asshole. 2:30 BASED xD But the flower thing is 100% out of line. You dont buy roses to another mans girlfriend / wife, ever. Unless they're white / black due to wedding / funeral reception. For the exact same reason you dont buy victorias secret underwear to another mans gf / wife. Its a romantic gesture, in every culture. That married guy 100% wants something to happen between them. Otherwise he would have sent her ANY OTHER kind of flowers, petunias, orchids (if he likes flashing wealth), tulips, anything. He could even have bought her a huge TV, or new cell phone, or a fridge or something. Roses is an undeniable signal that he wants to get it on with her, and she liked that signal. Thats why she wanted everyone on instagram to think it was her BF that gave her those flowers... Why? Because she also knew it was a romantic gesture, otherwise she wouldnt have to lie about who gave them to her. Also love how NL keeps changing the narrative to "he just bought flowers", instead of saying what it was, Roses. Because if you say roses, you instantly get why its weird. xD

I feel like the dad saying "Santa is Turkish like me" is an underrated element. Dad being Muslim and Turkish and wanting his son to have good associations with his father's ethnicity... could have more than one reason. And the comment about "maliciousness" and "drawing blood" feels like it's assigning quite a lot of ill intent TO said Turkish Muslim man, trying to say something positive about his identity.
@greenoftreeblackofblue66253 жыл бұрын
He told him Santa isn't real and then told him he was Turkish. Wouldn't you only say that Santa is Turkish? The boy seem to already have a idea who Santa was so that would be strange in itself, but then he said he wasn't real so I don't understand how that creates a bond. I think if he was trying to do that he messed up and well I don't think he was trying to be malicious about it but he certainly fumbled the ball on that front.

That Christmas one is absolutely insane. I feel like I'm losing my mind. The husband made an absolutely tiny slight, and the wife went to the ballistic level of 'I'm cutting you out of our holidays and family celebrations this year'. People who fanatically worship Christmas are fucking mental.
@kiryukanzaki11413 жыл бұрын
It technically wasn't a tiny slight from the view of their child. The poster said their child was visibly upset. When you're young and believe in Santa, only to be casually told by one of your parents that what you believed in was a lie, and that your parents were lying to you, it kinda destroys your world.

@@kiryukanzaki1141 Santa isn't a kid's whole world. And the kid wasn't slighted, just very disappointed
@TheSquareOnes3 жыл бұрын
@@kiryukanzaki1141 I'd assume the child would feel worse about one of their parents being excluded from christmas than having a slightly early reveal that santa isn't literally real (which does nothing to affect the holiday itself anyway, we all know santa is fake but somehow still manage to celebrate every year). He definitely went about it the wrong way, I think any kind "worldview" conversation is worth having both parents around for at the very least, but in the grand scheme of things this is very minor.

The amount the flowers costs isn't really the biggest problem. The fact that she wanted to lie and tell people her boyfriend bought them either means A) The rich guy isn't actually a friend at all, because hes not going to be in conversations with the both of them and the lie can be maintained, making the purchase weirder B) The rich guy is a friend, and will possibly be present when the lie is being told, and has already told the girlfriend that hes fine with it. Which means the girlfriend has had a conversation about her boyfriends jealousy with a guy that is possibly showing interest in her.

Something about the Christmas one that weirds me out is the wife’s un-invitation to family Christmas is predicated on the husband “not being a buzzkill”. Like that wording makes it sound like he’s a bahumbug Scrooge type complaining about Christmas, not that he ruined Santa for their kid like, four years early. What is his response to that supposed to be? The deed is done, what further buzzkill is there for him to be. Does she mean he should apologize first? I just don’t get why it’s worded like that.

Man that Santa story reminded me of how my sister learned about it and how I was kind of a piece of shit back then. I was probably around 11-12 as well and had just learned that santa/Easter bunny etc weren't real, and the same day I just went over to my sister who's 2 years younger than me and was like "hey guess what, Santa isn't real". Needless to say my parents weren't to happy with me after that

I swear it is so weird to me how people feel this need to keep these obscure mystical figures (in some cases marketing figures) alive for their children. Maybe it's my reddit atheist moment but all these holidays are sick either way. Like I was happy knowing my parents/family bought me gifts and not some mystical figure.

Of course information will be taken with a grain of salt since internet people aren’t always correct. And of course you don’t need to be a christian to enjoy learning about the origins of ancient people. It’s like a historical investigation and it’s super interesting!

On the Christmas story: Doing something like that without talking to your spouse: Bad. Not showing remorse: Very dysfunctional for a relationship. Like, marriage counseling needed. Christmas is a long way away, but if this isn't resolved by then it really isn't that crazy to spend that time apart. I kind of see what Northern is talking about, but I would give OP the benefit of the doubt and assume that she is flexible on her statement if their relationship improves.

I don't see why it's such a big deal to not lie to kids about Santa. They can still enjoy the holiday and thank the right people for gifts given and time spent. However if they agreed on something, then the husband broke that agreement, then that makes him the asshole.

If meritocracy worked, Ryan and this other KZbinr Mah-Dry-Bread would have way over a millon subscribers. Ryan uploads multiple videos a day and is entertaining in all of them. And MDB uploaded at least a video a day FOR 10 YEARS STRAIGHT!!! (There was one day where he was really sick, but we obviously don't count it against him.) Along with weekly Pokemon challenges like beating Pokemon Gen 1 with a Magikarp. Nope, can't evolve it. A fucking Magikarp. The only time where he allowed himself items it was that awful. And he usually manages to get them done in a week along with other videos! Thinking about it, I'd like to see Ryan and MDB hang out one day.

Regarding the flower gifting story, I think the biggest red flag was pretending it was from the OP and not the other friend. If someone told me "this super rich friend of mine got me something fancy for my birthday" I don't think I'd assume they were trying to swoop in if you don't cover it up. Some people have more money than others. If 1% of your monthly earnings is a good gift price for you, and someone makes 100x what you do, maybe it's not so weird for them to spend 100x. I admit it could definitely be weird, but I don't think it's *inherently* weird. As with all AITI posts, just talk it out lol

I feel like the Christmas one is an "Everyone is the asshole" except the kid, obviously. If OP had previously agreed with her husband not to tell his kid Santa isn't real and he did anyway that's just a really douchey thing to do in general, but in addition to that I don't think many people are realising that the kid is 4 years old and innocent to a lot of the world, so removing the magic of Christmas for them at that age sucks even more. Also idk if it's just me but the "santa is turkish like me" thing sounds like the most arrogant crap to say to your own child lmao OP, on the other hand, doesn't even sound bothered that her kid is upset by knowing Santa isn't real and instead was more focused on *her* experience of the magic of Christmas. Then, she had a complete overreaction of basically buggering off her hubby that could potentially traumatise her kid and cause a rift between her and her husband, saying he's a buzz-kill. They both suck, and the kid really deserves better at this time of year. I think Christmas is really special for kids, and its depressing to see people ruin it for them like this. Hopefully they are all feeling better now.

similar thing happened when I was little irt finding out santa isn’t real: my parents were both working one night when i was like 6/7 and had a family friend babysit. i lost a tooth, and i put it under my pillow and everything, expecting the tooth fairy. i woke up the next morning , horrified to discover that there was nothing waiting for me but my own missing tooth. i left my room to go down one door to the bathroom. my mom was there, half asleep as this was early in the morning, trying to just go back to bed. tooth in hand, i knock on the door and yell about the tooth fairy; my mom opens the door in shock as i ask her if the tooth fsiry isn’t real. my little child brain began to run through the litany of mythical figures in my hesd that had been played by my parents. however i am jealous of your only child moment because i had to swear to keep this from my younger brother 😭
