Look I get that you can’t necessarily help who you come from, but the fact that he’s done nothing to stop his family from literally insulting the woman he plans to marry is a giant red flag for me. I’d be thinking long and hard about if I want to spend the rest of my life dealing with these people.

Tho I feel empathy to the possibility of the guy being emotionally abused growing up, it’s not a valid excuse to expose his wife to that emotional trauma and make her responsible for dealing with the after math. Either learn to deal with it in a healthy way, or leave the relationship

It sounds to me like there's some sort of weird sexism going on as well. Seems to me that the family has a high standard for him to work and at least provide for himself but God forbid he ever buy his girlfriend anything. The sounds like a miserable situation and I would not run away fast enough.
