The fact that no one talked about the REAL reason you can't have dogs in stores was driving me insane. Most dogs don't like being startled by strangers, whether human or canine, to some degree. Grocery stores are a continual maze of blind corners and narrow corridors with people going in all directions, which would generate countless situations where a dog would feel surprised and cornered, triggering a fight or flight response. Yes, there are lots of good dogs out there who would be fine, but guess what? Almost no one thinks their dog is a bad dog, even when they've attacked another dog or person multiple times. I have multiple intelligent family members who refuse to admit that their dog is dangerous because they're emotionally attached to them, and if they could take them into store, they definitely would. There would be an INSANE amount of dog fights or attacks if you let them in indiscriminately, and there's no way to pick who is and isn't allowed fairly except for banning all but trained, certified service animals. Sorry for the essay, but it's bonkers no one mentioned this.

You can't expect every dog owner to have a well behaved pet. As someone who worked in a pharmacy where pets were allowed, I've had to clean up dog excrements from alleys several times and I've had to remove food items that dogs got into from the isle. That's not even including the fact that some people are terrified of dogs and would have to wait for the customer to leave before they felt comfortable going into a section of the store.

As someone who loves dogs even I think bringing you're pet into a grocery store is not okay. Unfortunately you can't trust every owner to have a perfectly well behaved dog so it's better for everyone to just not allow them in the store at all. Nobody should have to worry about their children being bit or having an allergic reaction when getting groceries. There's no reason you can't just leave your dog at home for a couple hours.

After working in a grocery store for a few years I'm genuinely concerned that people don't understand how disgusting the fresh items are. They're covered in sticky pesticides and shipped in a dirty storage crate, then rolled around on unsanitized counters. Many of them fall on the floor. I've also never seen produce shelves get cleaned so I can't imagine they're much better than the floor. A dog taking a full piss onto an apple would unironically make it cleaner. The amount of times a customer has lambasted me about picking up some fruit off the ground and putting it back on the shelf is disturbing

Ironically as NL is saying some people will disagree with him, I then disagree with his next take for the first time. A good chunk of dog owners are assholes. My lil autistic brain freaks out at dogs barking which makes me scared to be around them, and yet so many dog owners just assume that everyone is happy about having a dog run up to them and as I stand there having a panic attack they just say "don't worry, he's friendly" I don't care if he's friendly, keep him away from me. There's also a big increase here in the UK in dog attacks because people got dogs during lockdown and they're now unsocialised and untrained. Nope, keep your dogs away from me.

Dogs in the grocery store is a stupid idea for several reasons and mostly revolves around the "My dog" rather than other dogs. IF I were to allow dogs in I'd have a designated place for dogs to hang out. Once you make an exception it tends to lead to more garbage. Here's why it's bad ; 1.) People can barely control their dogs, let alone look after them. Throw in 100 dogs in the area and hope this never happens. 2.) Other people are allergic to dogs. They don't want that shedded hair everywhere. 3.) It's a place full of food. Unless you have 100% surveillance on it don't even. 4.) People can't clean up after their dogs when they have to in public areas. Do you think they'll do it here? They can't even be assed to put things back where they got them. Service dogs should be able to... until they break a rule then you get to clean it up and replace anything.

so i think it's kind of crazy to repeatedly brush off the request to eat the dinner together, especially with the context that apparently the person had news they wanted the share, but that being said, since it's not in accordance with the normal eating habits of the family imo it would've made sense to clarify that they wanted this to be a 'family dinner' sometime beforehand

When i was born my mother was 48. My parents thought they couldn’t have kids anymore, but not only did they have me but then also two more kids, though the last one did end up having birth defects which may have been contributed to by age. If her mother had her at the same age (which she didn’t) my grandmother would gave been 96 when i was born. And by the time i was 20 and posting on /r/AITA she would gave been born 116 years ago. It is uncommon for people to have children that late in life, but it does happen. And the probability of you having children late probably goes up if your parents did, since you inherent their genes and are thus more likely to remain fertile later in life. The people who’s grandparents were born in the 1800s is definitely smaller than the group who’s parents were born in the 1900s or 2000s (and shrinking all the time), but there are eight billion people on the planet, so even if its only 1% that’d still be 80,000,000 people who could make that claim.

@Wertsir

Even if I didn’t care about its impact on me the human, i still wouldn’t want pets in the grocery store just because there are so many foods they’d be exposed to that are potentially toxic to them. This both harms the animal and creates increased liability for the store who will now need to account for the animals wandering around lest they risk being charged with negligence. Additionally the problem with people tying their dogs outside isn’t that the dog isn’t allowed in the store, the problem is that _the owner brought the dog with them_ to a place they knew the dog would not be allowed. Just leave the dog at home when you go shopping, it ain’t that hard. There’s no reason to reorganize a perfectly functional system to reward the behavior of bad pet owners. If you’re on a walk with your dog and you decide you want to go shopping you should turn around, walk the dog home, leave the animal there where it is secure and free to roam about safely, then drive back to the store in your car (or bike, or what-have-you) like a responsible human being would. This false dichotomy that presents the only two options as being “chain an animal outside the store, or let them into the store” is insanity. Just don’t bring them in the first place.

People are less honest in real life than they are on reddit, because in real life there can be consequences for their actions where reddit provides a veil of pseudo-anonymity. If a person says something psychotic to their friends, they might lose those friends, or at least have them think less of them. But if they say something psychotic on reddit they can must delete the account and move on with their life. So i think you’ve got it backwards, people are more likely to hide their sussy behaviors in person, even with friends, than they are to hide it online. I mean just think of the number of people who openly discuss their fetishes online who would never do so in person.
